Am I the only one that didn't know this? What a shame, Tom Anderson guitars are some among the best production guitars in the world.
no shame here, he's doing what he loves.. i visted his shop in 04, and had lunch with him, spent the whole day with the guy... really a nice man. very passionate, and loves what he does... he just wants out of the "business" end and wants to design and build.

stew mac charges what it does because it can. if you want to look around, and possibly some mods yourself you can save a few bucks.. their 100' roll of hookup wire is $38, at mcm electronics the exact same thing (brand everything) is $13. just trying to make a buck like the rest of us.

How can Carvin afford to sell OFRs for $180?
reseller pricing is 120ish on a chrome floyd, so they are still making a few bux.

Hellow I am sorry I am doing this but this is a extenstion on my previous post about the 5150 project I am needing a fr and don't have the budget to spend between 250-300 dollars on one so does anyone know of any copies that are decent quality or if any one happens to have a old one lying around that they wouldn't mind selling.
dont skimp on the trem... carvin has the cheapest i've seen around 179 ish.

If i had to get a cheaper one, the only thing i would get would be a shaller, the cheapo's will give you fits. A buddy had a knock off and on the first string up, 2 of the saddles cracked.

Does anyone know why Fender makes sooo many holes in the neck cavity on their guitars? I thought they where only to be found on Squires, but even on my 3000$ strat there are 3 holes that doesent seem to have any function at all...
most likely they are machining holes used to line up jigs, and used for painting... holding the guitar while painting.
anderson has one hole that he uses, screws in a threaded brass insert, and screws a pipe with a flattend end to the guitar, upon assembly they take out the brass insert and leave a hole.

Stew mac has two basic kinds of fret crowning files. Diamond and "traditional". I'm tempted to just go with the regular file. Will I regret not getting the diamond file?
Also, any suggestions on the best place to buy?
Thanks
anything diamond will last longer. if you plan on doing stainless frets, diamond is a must, they will chew up normal fret files quick. not a whole lot of choices on this, i use stewmac since they are in ohio and i get my stuff overnight.

you can take a little finish brad nail, and hammer it in one side, and snip the head off with some wire cutters, just leave a little bit sticking up, and when pressed to the other side it will not go anywhere, also good with fingerboards on necks.

this is how g&l does it..

So everybody knows about the Ibanez 7 strings, from Vai's Universe and the derivative RG models to the signatures (which to me just look like RGs with band logos) like the K7.. but what alternatives are there from the likes of Jackson, ESP, BC-Rich.....
My brother's been nagging me to buy him a 7 string and I was going to buy him the RG1527 (£499), which is about as much as I'm willing to spend on yet another guitar for him. Now I am just wondering if there are any alternatives in this kind of price range.
I might buy myself a 7 string after, and I've always fancied getting a Jem, so I might look at a UV777.. or if I can find one, a Jackson RR-V 7 string would be great, I've found references to them around the net but nowhere to buy 'em.
So anyone with any information on the 7 strings available please post link, pics, or info
check out schecter c7 hellraiser, looks pretty nice, havent played one yet (nobody stocks them around here).
decent prices too.

How would you go about making these? I'm puzzled.
silver or brass tube with the shell pressed inside. might have to size it.

although not mentioned on their website I've seen adverts for a twin-carved top electric kit (not quite PRS shape). drop them a line and ask them
http://www.brandoniguitars.co.uk/alanhistory.html
grizzly tools has a few different kits, one that is like a prs one has a floyd and one has a stoptail. they'll probably ship anywhere..

if the neck bends upside, to which direction should i move the truss rod?
1. http://members.lycos.nl/y0ni/Uploader/Uploads/1.JPG
2. http://members.lycos.nl/y0ni/Uploader/Uploads/2.JPG
thanks in advance ^^
if when you sight down the neck and it's bowing towards the floor, you need to tighten it (clockwise), if it's backbowed towards the strings, and they are fretting out real bad, you need to do it counter clockwise (loosen), some are more touchy than others, and dont over tighten it, move it a bit, and play with it for a little while, and see if it moves.. some necks take a few minutes to settle in.

Tandy Dyes
Anybody ever used this stuff? A friend used it on a Mondolin kit and the pictures looked pretty good. Not sure what, if any, advantage they would offer over traditional stuff.
tom anderson uses leather dye, i forget the brand off the top of my head, he gets pretty good results

Interesting discussion and interesting answers!talent for talent sake is great, but writing good songs is another thing.if you have watched the liquid drum theater dvd with portnoy, he at one point is charting a song, showing how it changes time signatures like 30 times in a minute, which for technical sake is quite an achievement, but does it make a great song?
Then why the hell do you call Ocatavarium crap? It is the most song-driven album by DT ever. Nearly no solos or insanely technical passages. Just great songs.
inhale guys... not trying to start a flame. just stating i didnt like it. i dont think the songs are as good as thier earlier works. and please dont compare classical music to dream theater. and yes i know what song he was talking about, but again i lost interest in them since awake so i dont know the title. i listened to the cd today again, and it was better, so maybe with a few more spins i might like it more. guess i'm the oddball out.

didnt say he was involved with it all that much, who knows how much he really was, but after awake it seemed to me to go to crap. maybe i'm growing out of that kind of music, who knows.

@terrax: I simpy don't understand this attitude. I mean Awake was definately an excellent album. BUT why do people always bash bands which change their style and progress? Do you want to hear the same old stuff over and over again? DT progressed in a great way. I respect bands who are able to deliver something new on every record without losing their trademark sound. To me this is the biggest achievement a band can make....
And both of the last releases are my favorite CD's. Ever thought about what would happen if they release a Images&Words NOW? Times have changed....what was a great progressive masterpiece at the time would be ridiculed as a cheesy 80ies prog cd today....
What is so bad about the new CD's? They are very unique and above most other bands in terms of talent....
talent for talent sake is great, but writing good songs is another thing. i think they have progressed yes, but i think they are spreading theirselves too thin on side projects. and do we really need a 28 minute long song? guys too each his own, some of my favorite bands have released some clunkers lately, ie King's x.

not bashing guys, just giving my opinion. awake is probably one of my top 5 albums of all time. i think with the bar set so high, it's hard to top it.

i've heard that the mexis are 5 - 7 piece bodys, with a single piece veneer over the top and back to hide the glue seams. squire, i'm not sure it would even be that good of wood. i think i'd leave it, you might not like what you find
dave

craptivarium
imho all downhill after awake. they need kev back.
dave

be carefull planing figured wood... can tear out like crazy. especially thin pieces. i'd probably go as far to say dont plane it, sand it.
