personal preference.. plus it's easier with a flat back when using a fret press. other necks i've fretted in the past have shown that it's easier tho' even when using a hammer too.

a quick update.... been slow going - been really busy at work with overtime & then family issues to take care of.

the neck ready for rough carving, the '57 maple neck is being used a template/reference coz I love the profile! This is gonna get used on the next project.

Oh, it is too late to consider suggested that you sort out that glueline? Nothing a bit of jointing won't hide.

Thanks for the comments and kind words. Its too late to fix that glue seam at this point. Its filled and shouldn't show too much in the gran scheme of things. Its only my second and third build and they are what they are, which for me is a learning experience. I learned quite a lot from my first build and I've learned a lot from these two.

I'll try and apply those lessons on the next build and see if I can push myself a little further in the future. I already have a few ideas in mind.

don't care whether anyone is poking fun or not, mistakes or not I've seen worse pro builds - like has been said on previous builds - a good luthier hides their mistakes - the only problem with these is you've been honest enough & had the balls to share them - I'd be happy to own both of these builds - i've made much worse mistakes over the years that can't be hidden!! (not telling!!)

The wonder that is the Corvus certainly merits more than salvaged wood from a derelict shed.

if anyone was planning to make a corvus from any type of wood I would rather take a flamethrower to it!!! even MDF is too good for a corvus

they have the templates too... pickup, floyds etc.... pretty much everything you want.

I do it the hard way too... gives me a certain satisfaction. I was recently carving a neck by hand with rasps & surforms & my brother was like "Whoa - you're making hard work for yourself there - why don't you use a power-file or something"

My reply? - "1. I don't have a powerfile. 2. I'm not afraid of hard work."....lol

You most likely only need a level and crown...I don't think the 006 has even been around long enough to need refretting..

I duno. depends on the level of play it gets. But id say a total refret is probobly a little much. Have a look at them, find the lowest point on the worst one. thats the level they will end up at after a decent level/crown. If you can live with that then just get that done. A refret costs a lot more than just a level job. Maby a few piks would help you get a better answer

I'm glad I spent more time ensuring the fretboard was perfect before fretting. The extra time spent has paid off & my new fret-press is a dream to use - checked the frets for flatness & they seem perfect & probably won't need levelling & crowning which I'm happy with. This fretwire is that hard by the time I'd finished cutting 22 pieces & then cutting them flush to the f/b my hands were killing(!!) so I wasn't relishing the thought of having to level it too. Obviously I'll re-check it after the necks been carved but hopefully it'll be ok.

Oh, one other point - I commented earlier on how hard this Honduras rosewood was - Honduras Rosewood - like I said - hard as ebony!

Fretboard polished to 12000 Micromesh - overkill I know but it had to be done, lol! Anyone tell what the screen shot is?

1st fret in! This is the 1st time I've used stainless steel fretwire so it's gonna be a sharp learning curve. First impressions - boy is it hard!

Got the first blank glued , only 3 more to go, and then the planer to get it ready for the fretboard.

Got a bit close to the glue too... good to know it doesn't stick to hair too well
