not making your own neck on the explorer? or whats the deal with that?
I dont know if you knew this but I just got in to a shop, i moved away from my shop 2 years ago and Ive not had the tools or set up to build necks and for a while it was hard to even get a body done, but thats not a problem now and I have a shop and tools and Im building the necks again, My Problem was the same as the one your haveing right now! lack of tools
I hope to see you start that 7-string soon man its going to be wicked

sweet hows the purpel heart work like is it hard to work with ?
79 was flopy for me i use a 80 or 85 for my f
Well Its going great sofar but ive not started any shapeing of the body yet and sanding has not really come in to play yet But I dont see any problems
On with build progress, Today I'll be sloting the fretboard
!!METAL MATT!!

Ok
Body, ALDER if your Painting it OR Mahogany with a maple cap is its a Clear finish
Pickups, Any thing HOT, EMG 81s, Seymour Duncan
Neck Maple with an Ebony fret board
If you want trem than Kahler all the way
Also body design If its Just Metal than something RG styled but its is Melt your face off with acid metal than you need something a bit more extream
But really anything can make a guitar Metal, its really more the Player

This Is A Jig I made up so I could fix a few hard things I found about building necks
Ok first with the problem your haveing, I first cut Scarf and than sand them Flat for glueing I than take what will be the headstock and I sand down close to the thickness of a headstock (i do mine to 5/8"s) once every thing is ready for Glue up I then line it all up as if I was about to clamp it down, now I drill to holes off to the side of the neck thru both pices of wood where I know there going to be cut off and removed and will not cause any Problems I than make the pilot holes I just driled out in the headstock a bit biger so that I have some movement and nothing will get bound up, Ive done a few where Ive not drilled to larger holes and Its caused problems in the Glue up the screws kept things from being flat and level
ANY WAY after drilling your holes a bit larger only on the headstock part of the Scarf joint make sure that you now drill counter sink holes for thr heads of the screws, that will come in to play latter with this jig as I use the jig to pass the neck thru my thickness sander to get a perfect level gule area for the fretboard

What gauge strings are you planning to use?
I found that a .070" tuned to f# at 28.5" was a little loose for my liking, went up to .079", now I can take it down to E with no trouble. And its so much nicer to play tuned to F#. Feels more like a guitar than a bass.
to tell ya the truth Im not even sure yet! I want to do alot of experimenting With tuneing and String gauge
but I think to start off with I want B,D,E,A,D,G,B,E Tuneing But I want to play with F#,B,E,A,D,G,B,E And F,Bb,Eb,Ab,Db,Gb,Bb,Eb

Ive never had a hard time with purpleheart Glueups or color loss I love purpleheart, It puts out great Tone
I know there is a few people on this forum that Hate the stuff (wes for one ) But thats just personal preference
Im working with some Purpleheart right now for an 8-string Im building and as normal all is going well, there are some things to watch out for! purplehear is Very hard on tools and Blades, also sanding can be a real pain in the back side but all in all its great stuff

i'm gonna need a bigger bucket
I was sooo just about to edit that in to my post just for the explorer body alone, but man if you can come up with a way of doing it that would be so wicked, also your going to need a really really wide drum you see how pushing the guitar thru the paint pulls the paint in from the edges he even just about ran out of paint near the end, and if you do a neck thru you have the neck AND the body
