  1. I had the idea that you just walked into a wood shop and bought a piece of wood --I thought guitar woods had to be aged a certain amount of time and a certain way in order to make the stable enough to use? As for the design, I didn't realize this was going to be a business. In that case, I definitely think you should put more thought into coming up a with a truly original design. I mean, there are so many things you can do with guitars, why stick to a strat shape (okay, okay, you have some little tweaks in there, but that doesn't make it original). For that matter, I don't consider my bocaster design original either, to me, it's a 'based on' design. Idch, To the best of my knowledge the only thing that would restrict you from taking any piece of wood and making anything out of it, weither it be a book shelf or guitar, would be its moisture content. As long as it is an acceptable percentage their should be no problem. If I am wrong some please let me know. With regard to my design and shape, as you have said and like many have said elsewhere within this forum,"There is only so much that can be done with a piece of wood". I am no historian but, from everything that I have read and seen it appears that insperation has had to come from somewhere. When Les Paul made the first Gibson "Log" he got his inspiration from the acustic models that were available at the time. One needs to remember that while there are infinate possibilities for that piece of wood it also must meet form and function and those are finite. With regard to your bocaster it appears to be a derivitive of the Bo Diddley "Square Guitar". In itself it may posess many defining attributes that make it different from everything else out there. I guess that if you wanted to capitalize on them you would have to figure out what they are and go from there.
  2. Sorry to butt in, but....register your design shape? how does one go about doing that? And where does your design really differ from the tons of other strat 'extensions' out there? I'm not trying to be nasty, I just don't see what's original about this design and why you think you can somehow trademark it. Other question: is this wood already aged? +1 With regard to registering my design and shape, I do not know if I used the correct termonology, however my design is my own just like the Les Paul is a Gibson owned design. There are many guitars out there that resemble it but when a company or individual creates a guitar that too closely resembles this design it becomes a legal issue. It may be arrogant of me to assume that what I have come up with may have future marking value. However the possibility still exists and if that possibility does exist than I just like any other aspiring business man would be a fool to give his ideas away. Let us remember that fortunes have been made by many people who have capatilized on anothers ideas. As for how I would go about registering the design or if it is even a viable issue, I do not know but if and when I do find out I will be sure to post. To the best of my knowledge the wood is aged. Why do you ask?
  3. Does any one have any opinions on the various fixed bridges that are available, as I am undicided on which one I will use for this project. I do know that I would like something that would not require me to use a neck angle.
  4. I have no problem with giving you a template, however before I do so I would like to gage the response that I get from the finished product as I may want to register the design and shape when finished.
  5. Thank you for the complement, to develop it I took parts of my favorite guitars and combined them to develop it.
  6. Today I had a chance to cut the body blank into shape. I hope to get my riser block kit for my band saw with in the next week or so at which point I can resaw my maple, plane it and make the book matched tops and back. Below is a picture of the core cut to shape. Please feel free to post any questions or comments.
  7. Well, the pics work for me. I like it! Classic, yet original. Good work!
  8. sorry about that I have gotten one pic to post but I cant seem to figure out why the other two pics of the wood will not post to the server. I will continue to work on it and edit it later.
  9. In the past few months that I have been a part of this forum I have been thinking of Ideas that I would like to incorporate into my first real project. The first thing that I wanted to come up with was the design, so I thought of all of the different shapes that I liked and combined them into one shape. The resulting shape is very much like a PRS. It has the rear shape of a Les Paul, the deep recess horns of a Jackson Soloist and the carved top of a PRS as you can see below. The next thing that I thought of was the type of wood that I wanted to use so I picked a mahogany core with a flame maple cap and back. I went to one of our local wood supply stores and found a couple of boards that would fit my needs. I found an 8' X 8" X 1 1/4" piece of mahogany and a 8' X 7" X 1" piece of flame maple for $58.00. Out of this I should be able to get two bodies and two necks. I should be able to transfer my design to wood some time with in the next week and post its progress. If anyone would like to comment please feel free as all constructive criticism is welcome.
  10. I just bought one of the central machinery 14" band saws with the 4 speed option from horror freight and when I went to the Grizzly sight to compare it to the grizzly model I noticed that it is the same exact band saw. Does anyone know anything about this.
  11. Matt, Thank you for the complements. Unfortunatly it wasnt me that painted the mural. I came up with the "Goth World" idea and a professional artist that I work with brought my idea to life. I did however do all of the other work, from stripping the paint, that was on it before, to laying the 15 coats of polyuritane, wet sanding and buffing. I am presently learning how to air brush and hope to do some other projects that I have in mind completely myself.
  12. well we gave the guitar to Megan this morning and she loved it. For myself it was kind of like giving away one of my children. I have had the guitar since 93' or 94' and it has been all over the world with me but when Megan opened the case and saw it, it made all of the work I put into it worth the effort. I must say that becoming part of the Project Guitar forum and learning from everyone one has been a christmas gift in itself, so I would like to say Merry Christmas to everyone that has been a part of the forum and additionally thank everyone for the contributions made.
  13. MzI, Thanks for the complements. I will try to resize the pics this evening along with some up dated pics. I should be finished with the wet sanding, buffing and assembly tonight.
  14. Well I have finaly reached a point where I could post some new pics of the Charvel that I am re doing. Every one please feel free to coment on its progress. http://www.fullservesite.com/cyclone8/its%...arvel-body1.JPG http://www.fullservesite.com/cyclone8/its%...arvel-body2.JPG http://www.fullservesite.com/cyclone8/its%...harvel-full.JPG http://www.fullservesite.com/cyclone8/its%...harvel-neck.JPG
  15. Congrats, I have a boy due on March 4th and cant wait for him to get here. God bless and Merry Christmas
  16. Mr. Doug Yes it is possible to use the auto paint. The only problem that you may encounter is the paint reacting with anything that may be on the wood such as oils or solvents. Make sure that before you paint that you have preped the guitar to prevent this from happening. The link below will take you to on of the guitars that i painted using automotive paint. Additionaly their are tutorials in this section on how to prep for paint. I hope that this helps you.
  17. This is a subject that I have been debating over for quite some time. To this point I have not designed and built a guitar from scratch, I have only modified existing components and assembled kits. I am slowly moving to that stage in the evolution in my guitar making where I will attempt a from scratch build and I do not know where I want to begin, however I do know that it will have classic lines, be contoured and semi-hollow. When we take into consideration what is currently out there with regard to the strats, LP's, SG's, ect. these guitars have withstood the test of time because they too posess classic lines and all posess form and function.
  18. This may be one of the hardest pols put to the vote. I am 34 years old and have been a fan of Ozzy's stuff sence his Sabbath days and to actually ask who was his best guitarist is asking alot from any fan of his music. Each guitarist mentioned brought something different to the table and helped to mold Ozzy's sound and music, however due to Randy's untimley demise we do not know what Ozzy's music would have evolved into had he not been taken from us so early and some believe not yet in his prime. I think that if he were still with us he would smoke any one else in his arena and when we consider the impact that he has made and listen to the poeple that are playing now you can hear Randy playing. With that said I have to go with Randy.
  19. Mat, thanks for the kind words. I hope to have more pictures posted within the next couple of weeks detailing the progress of both guitars.
  20. This is the second of the two projects that I am working on. It is a charvel that I bought while in Japan about 10 years ago. Back when I bought it the paint chipped off of it and I tried to repaint it, but screwed it up. Now I have restripped it to the wood and as the pictures indicate primed and wet sanded it. http://fullservesite.com/cyclone8/its%20a%...all/charvel.jpg http://fullservesite.com/cyclone8/its%20a%...ll/charvel1.jpg I am redoeing this guitar to sell to a cousin for his daughter. She is into the whole "Goth" culture so what I plan to do is paint it gloss black and paint a Disney theam mural on it. I know what you are saying a Disney theam for some one into goth. Well its going to be mickey and minnie dressed in goth atire in front of the enchanted castle and across the top in gothic lettering "Its a Goth World after all". I hope to have the paint that I will use for both projects in by thursday after next. hopefully I will be able to finish wet sanding both guitars by then and paint the following week end.
  21. wes, thanks for the help. I could not figure out what had happened.
  22. This is the first of my two new projects. The it is a warmoth that I bought off of ebay. It is a soloist body and while it is a factory made body I had to make some repairs to it. The previous owner had tried to cut a hole for the single coil neck pickup and screwed it up bad. As you can see in the first picture I filled the hole with a Maple plug, but I messed up and didnt set it in the right way. In the second picture it is hard to see but their were two screws broken off in the upper horn, which I had to extract and plug. http://fullservesite.com/cyclone8/death%20dealer/warmoth.jpg http://fullservesite.com/cyclone8/death%20...er/warmoth1.jpg after finishing all of the repairs I was able to prime the body this past saturday using URO primer. http://fullservesite.com/cyclone8/death%20...er/warmoth2.jpg for the finish on this one I plan on using a base coat/clear coat system with an airbrush mural between the two. For the base color I plan on using an antique white. I am open to all questons, concerns and comments so please feel free to reply.
  23. ddg, I had thought about making the table in split sections and this is something that I will do regardles of weather or not I mount the DP to it. Thanks for the input and I hope to have pictures to post of everything when I am done. tdog, Its funny that you should mention PM as I am currently looking at an issue that has plans on how to make hand planes. In the time machine section there are always pictures like you mentioned. It kills me to think that people actually thought that those were actual pictures of normal america. Thanks for the input and I will see what I can do with the ideas.
  24. tdog, thanks for the reply. I cant weld that good, and my space is limited to my garage. I am in the process of desigining and building a fold down work bench to install in my garage and mounting the drill press to it would be an option, however I would have to remove it every time I wanted to store the work bench. I had considered building a platform out of 2x4 and 3/4" plywood and and solid pine and enclosing it so that I would have some extra storage. If anyone has done anything like this please let me know.
  25. I need some help. I just bought a new 12" tradesman tabletop drillpress and I would like to know if any one has any ideas on building a base to set it on. All ideas will be recieved with the same amount of appericiation and consideration. Thanks in advace for any help given.
