  1. Yeah, but I don't have any reverse tuners, so I gotta go with standard orientation. I have enough decent hardware to build 3-4 guitars at the moment, so basicaly I create a guitar around what's available. I think I'm gonna go with curved tip (the bottom one), i think it flows better with the body shape. I'm gonna do a more realistic mockup to see where I'm heading...
  2. I'd like an objective opinion about a headstock design. I'm trying to avoid using the Ibby headstock again, and add a little personal touch. Since everything is already out there, there's not much I can do to be absolutely original, but I'm trying at least not to make an exact copy of something. I played a bit with bezier curves, and these I like the most so far
  3. That's from sanding drum. Still have to do one round with finer grit, so it's not a problem. I am avoiding router at this stage, had some damage few times before and ended up with smaller bodies This way there's no tearout so it's much safer.
  4. Hey all, I started another guitar a while ago, so of course I'm gonna share the progress on this one also. With this one I'm gonna go with the flow, I'm still uncertain about some details, so we'll see where it will take me. Before I finished my last build, I acquired a nice flame maple board, large enough for few necks and tops. Since my thicknesser is only about 5'' wide, I decided to go with multi-lam looks of neckthru guitars, only with bolt on neck. I actually never tried building a neckthru, and surely ain't gonna do it yet. So for now I shaped the body, made of flame maple and sapele pieces, and also I made a neck blank with pieces same width like in the body. I hope the lams will flow nicely once put together. I'm gonna put one EMG 85 on this one, a Schaller roller bridge and Schaller tuners (everything used, no new parts). Still unsure of fingerboard wood, and of finish color (got some red stain left, so I might go with it, along with faux binding). Here are some pics: Thanks for watching! All suggestions regarding finish will be taken to consideration
  5. Thanks for feedback guys, means a lot! I'll surely add a personal touch on my next build, to differ it from standard ibanez shape, at least a bit more. It is a Ibby shape because that shape has always been my favourite, but all Ibanez guitars that I owned felt too small for me, so I had to make one that suits me better. I was also considering a truss rod cover, so it still is an option.
  6. Hi Pestvic, it actually is the same shade of silver, but there is a layer or two of clear between the two silvers. I also added some silver glitter to clear coats before stencil, so I could achieve more difference. After stencil came a few clear coats to blend everything together. Logo on headstock is vinyl sticker, also cleared over and sanded until it was flush with lacquer. Hope I explained well enough, if not I'll try better
  7. Tailcutter Guitars 7 string RG Specs: - RG shape, oversized a bit to keep the overall proportions balanced - 7 string, 26.5'' scale - 53mm width at nut, 70mm width at 24th fret - maple/sapele/maple neck with angled and reversed maple headstock and 2mm ash headstock cap, and flame maple veneer on the back - ash body, 2 piece - Gotoh tuners in black - Fixed bridge, black - EMG 707 for bridge & neck position - padouk fingerboard, 24 extra jumbo frets, offset aluminium rods for inlays, filled with padouk dust & CA glue. - volume, tone & 3way toggle switch, Ibanez JPM control layout. - bone nut (bone cooked and sawed by myself) - metallic silver finish w/ ghost logo graphic, and transparent satin 2K poly lacquer - black dome knobs - matching headstock. Original build thread This guitar is made to have some use of hardware that was laying around. Even though it looks generic, it's everything but. The neck is wider at nut than most 7 strings, it has 26,5'' scale, and a bit oversized body so it doesn't look goofy with a neck that big. The guitar is really comfortable to play to a guy my size, and a regular guitar feels like a toy after this one. Not my first build project, but one of the rare that got completed
  8. Hi there, I've put together this guitar today, and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Still need to fine tune the bridge a bit. Hardware is worn out a bit, it was used before, but I don't mind. Here are some today's pics
  9. Here's todays update, I sanded the front a bit to remove particles of glitter that were sticking out of the lacquer (LightninMike, I had a few clear coats before that, of course ). Layed down the template, and shot the silver. Here's the result, I wonder if it will still look ok after clear, or it will all just blend together. I hope it should be visible, at least at an angle...
  10. Well, I'm unsure if it is or isn't my thing either I had an idea to blend the graphic like this. I'll try to shoot silver again over this sparkle, so it sould be the same shade, only without sparkles on the logo. I want it to be hardly visible, or visible only at an angle, so I hope it will work out that way. If not, I'll think of something else hopefully. I liked it a lot without sparkles, it looked like it was casted out of metal. I also have glitter in different colors, but I'm hasitating to use any on this build. We'll see what will happen
  11. Hi Prostheta, not sure what ding are you thinking of, I'm not aware of any dings? If you mean the particle that got stuck on the very edge of the guitar (where control cavity begins) on the back shot of primed guitar, it got sanded of while preparing primer for the base coat. If that's not the one, I'd really like to know about it while I'm still doing first layers Sometimes even I can't find mistakes until I check the photos later. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it
  12. Here are few more decent pics And here is a spraying template. Hopefully it won't be hard to apply to body... I have one more in case I mess it up. Fingers crossed I'm planning to shoot some more lacquer on the body, so I can smooth it a bit by sanding. The surface is a bit rough now because of glitter particles.
  13. Shot a layer of clear with silver glitter And a shot of headstock Pictures are shot with smartphone, I'll try to make some more decent tomorrow in sunlight. The flakes are difficult to photograph Please ignore my messy workplace
  14. Hi all, having a nice weather here so I've got some updates... Primed the body and had to recess the bridge beforehand, to allow saddle height adjustment: backside: and shot the basecolor, metallic silver:
  15. The nut slots are filed to final depth, and the hardware is installed for a dry fit. Action is still a little too high with saddles at lowest, so I'll probably sand the neck heel a bit. Intonation is not set yet, but doesn't matter at the moment. Here are a few pics of the current stage
  16. Hi all, a small update to keep this build alive... I routed a battery cavity and got a plastic cover engraved for it: here is a closeup I also made a bone nut (bone cooked, sawed and shaped by myself), and marked string spacing with a small saw. I'll have to test fit hardware on guitar, and when I have the strings on it, I'll file string slots to depth. Also, I did fret leveling and recrowning, still some polishing to do.
  17. Thanks for feedback guys! About dots, they are made of 6mm aluminium tube. The middle is filled with padouk dust & CA glue. When fingerboard gets darker in a while, and it will, the difference in color with center dots shouldn't be noticable at all. I originally wanted to make small padouk dowels, but my idea abot making them didn't work. I found some great tutorials later, but doesn't matter much now, I like these also just the same.
  18. I decided to go along with your advices, so I glued thin maple (flamed) veneer on the backside of headstock. This veneer was closest to maple color on the neck, so i choose this one. Have some more laying around, but were much darker in color, almost look roasted. I hope this looks like you guys imagined it would be, I myself like it a lot. I was a bit afraid that it would be too much with a bit of figuring going on in the wood, but it seems to blend in quite nice. Here it is, still needs a bit more fine sanding.
  19. I managed to hammer the frets in today after doing final fingerboard leveling, and I also beveled the fret ends. Still have to do a bit of fret leveling, and then all that's left to do is final sanding to prepare guitar for spraying. The temperature is oscilating a lot where I live, I have -5°C early in the morning, and up to 15°C at noon, so most likely there ain't gonna be spraying before April or May. Here's today's pic, I'll do the closeup another day, it's too late now to shot without flash and then the pics are crappy:
  20. Hi, thanks for the comments! I would surely like to do some sort of "ghost" graphic, meaning it's invisible from one angle and visible from the other, but I'm still not that qualified and confident with spraying. I also don't have lots of choises regarding paints and lacquers, and I've wasted a lot of money until I founded paints that are good enough for guitars, and still easy enough to work with. I decided to go with this sort of finish because it is closest to my original idea, I also have template for graphic already laser cut. I thought I might do just one shade of silver, and then polish the graphic after the guitar is lacquered in matte. But I'm afraid the matte is gonna get shinier with time, so it would probably look like a mess after few years of playing
  21. So far, this is whats done And finally, a mockup of a finished guitar, done with the help from PG tutorial Soooo.... I would like some info about my idea with the finish. I plan to use metallic silver base, with my logo in a little darker shade of silver, and then use 2K matte over it. I'm not sure I've seen this metallic/matte combo before, so I don't know if it will loose some of metallic effect, and how it's gona look overall. I would like to see some examples of similar paintjob on whatever object, so please share some with me. Cheers, Neven
  22. Then I did side dots, regular plastic rods roughly shaped neck back Inlays done, and fingerboard radiused to 16'' Then today I did arm contour and bridge holes Also did a tummy contour and shaped the neck heel a little nicer And sanded neck volute some more, plus drilled for tuners
  23. Back of headstock thinned down to 15mm Inserts in neck heel Bolted on and shaped a bit Cavities routed
  24. Pickups test fit Gluing headstock ears Neck tapered, preparing for neck pocket routing Neck pocket routed Headstock with ash cap glued on, and shaped
