  1. Thanx X. Can you tell me more about those guitars in your profile? They are *%&$ing beautiful!!! stew
  2. Well here it is. Please remember it's my first attempt This is all being done on the dining room table in my 1 br condo! stew http://members.shaw.ca/stewartwright/Guitar.htm
  3. Ready to start on the back. It's mahogany and will need its grain filled. My concern is with the end grain in the cut aways. It looks to me that it will absorb more stain than the flat sides and back. Will the sanding sealer make the staining more uniform? Will the grain filler help here too? BTW what is the proper order for these 3 products to be applied? Thanx all stew
  4. Ed. Yes I discovered that on my test piece. So I bought a can of the same stuff in aerosol form an did a kinda sealer coat with that first. That seemed to work great!! I'm using all water based stuff! Stew
  5. Ok.. the top's dyed ,the back and neck are filled. I'm ready to start the clear. I'm going to be brushing it on. How the #@&* do you get the finish on all those sides and contours all during one application? It would seem that a horizontal surface makes for the best job so how, for example do you paint the back and top and sides without runs and drips? Thanx all!! stew
  6. While at the local wood finishing supply store yesterday I noticed that a satin finish allows your hand to slide easier. Has anyone switched from gloss on the body to satin on the neck? I might!! thanx all stew
  7. Don't know if it's frowned upon or not but I'm gonna be doin' it real soon now! I think it boils down to being willing to do a lot of sanding between coats or every few coats. I'll be using waterbased clear over dyed quilted maple and stained mahogany.
  8. I've never seen natural binding in person so I have a question. Can you actually get the natural binding to extend onto the top of the quitar a few millimeters or is it best to just put it on the side of the guitar at the side/top transition? How the hell would you mask something like that (on the top)? Thanx all! Stew
  9. Hi Steven. I've got a Warmoth Lp double cut coming soon ( I hope :-)). Are those imperfections the result of a previous owner or did it come from Warmoth like that? Was it unexpected? Mine will have a quited maple top on a mahogany body. Maple is gonna be green dye but I haven't decided on the back yet. Keep us informed on your progress!! thanx stew
  10. Hi everyone! I'm going to be doing a dye job on the carved quilted maple top and filling and staining the mahogany back of the guitar. I'm thinking I should do the back first so as not to mess up the dye job before clearcoating. This sound OK? Another question. What's best to use as a sanding block on the curved sections? Wouldn't a solid block have problems in the hollows? Thanx all!! stew
  11. Geez! I guess it was stupider than I thought!!
  12. Stupid question. Has anyone tried one of those Wagner power sprayers for clearcoating a guitar? You know....those electric jobs with the pump and reservour all together. I suspect they're better suited to painting stairs than guitars. thanx stew
  13. Hi all! Wuddaya think my chances are of getting a decent finish by applying a water based clearcoat by brush over a dyed maple top? Will the brush screw up the dye? thanx all! Thinking of using "Flecto Varathane Diamond Clear". stew
  14. I guess what I'm looking for is ..which tape has the least bleed . I want a tape that when you pull it off there's no dye/stain/topcoat underneith.
  15. Got another question for yous guys. What's the best masking tape to use for a natural binding project? I saw this qiestion posted in another thread but it never really got answered properly. Thanx once more! Stew
  16. Hello everyone! This is my first post! I'm having trouble finding a source for analine dyes. I know there are a lot of places on the net from which to order them, But I'd like to get them locally. Do full service paint shops sell dyes? Home depot? Artist supply outlets? Also has anyone used "Varathane" Diamond Wood Finish" as a top coat? It's a water based product. Thanks all! Stew
