I am working on my first guitar. It is a neck thru and I used oak. I have rough shaped the neck and I am going into town tonight to get some ties to help with the gluing of the fingerboard.
I have test stained a few pieces of oak and have realized that I am going to need a grain filler because the oak is so porus. I have not decided on an oil,wax or poly finish, but I wanted to see if any of you ever used a filler before. the neck is 7/8" oak with a piece of 7/8"maple laminated on the back of the body area where the "wings" will go. I have not decided on the species for the wings yet, but whatever finish I do use will show the grain of the wood. My fingerboard is rosewood w/ a double action trussrod.
Doing some research has revealed that oak necks produce a very bright tone. I wanted a throaty tone any suggestions for the pickups?
