Alright matey, welcome to the slippery slope of guitar fiddling. It may be you first project, but I doubt it'll be your last (for some reason sadning beomes adictive).

I presume that the paint in the cavities is thick and black. If this is the case, then that paint is shelding paint. It stops any interferance from getting to the electronics. You could sand it off if you wanted, but then you'd have to put some back on again (or cover it all in copper tape). Make sure you mask it all off when you spray your guitar again.

Chances are that the white stuff is grain filler.

I'm certainly not a finishing expert so I'll let someone else help you out on this one.

I hollowed out a cheap strat copy when I was drunk once and put a new (f holed top on). Really not that difficult, but I did a typical drunken job.

As for finishes, how about topping it in rubber instead. You could raise or lower the pickups from the back. Then when your pups were up, the rubber would stretch over them and you'd have some stretchy lumps. Now I've certainly never seen that before

Personally I'm a bit of an electric numpty (which is funny, what with working as an Electrical Engineer), but have you checked the earth to the tremlo.

On a strat style axe that I was torturing over the weekend, the earthwire went to the tremelo claw.

So what's your actual view on this Perry, as it is your guitar that's been copied.

You miffed, or couldn't really care. Obviously if it had an Ormsby logo or if they were being sold with the same paint job then you'd have grounds to be very annoyed indeed, but as it's a private guitar what's your view?

It's also worth checking that the cone is sitting flat on the sound ring. Alot of cheap acoustics have a soft pad to rest the cone on so it doesn't rattle. The jury is still out on this, but if you can remove it and have the cone sitting in the sound ring (and it doesn't rattle) then it may be worth looking at that.

I found that emmery cloth was the best thing to get a thick finish back to wood, then just work down the grades of normal paper to get it smooth.

I'm with GregP on the rockwool. A while back I was specifying a generator and went to have a play with it (this thing was an absolute monster - I seem to remember that it was a V24 diesel - it was bloody load, I know that). As the enclosure that it sits in has to let air in and out, but also had to keep the massive amount of noice low, they used acoustic enclosures at either end of the generator enclosure. All this consisted of was rockwall sandwiched between perforated steel sheets (holes about 2mm wide and close to each other). The whole sandwich was about 50mm thick and sandwiches were equally spaced with an air gap between them (again about 50mm spacing between sheets). The whole enclosure was about a 3m cube. You could stand at one end of it and shout your head off, the person standing on the other side couldn't hear a single word. Being the sad git that I am, I found it absolutely amazing (pity that the rest of the gen set was a steaming pile).

I heard good things about the Michael Messer strings, albeit from the forums on his site. Generally they're heavy gauge.

Cleaning the joints was a bit of hastle and it expanded like crazy, but I thought it quite good. Impossible to remove from the carpet though

I'd get myself to as many guitar shops as possible and play everything decent you can get your hands on......

.......Then I'd look for a second hand one the same. Never saw the point of buying a new guitar, might as well let someone else take the hit.

You could cut down a normal HB ring. If you put 45 degree cuts at the corners then you MAY be able to make them look really neat. Not tried it myself which is why the "MAY" is in capitals.

I'd have a nice Les Paul double cut with coil tapped HB's and variax electronics in. I'll build one of these one day.

What are pups like? Output - magnets etc and what sort of music do you think they'd be good for? I'm after something blusey to go in a mahogany Partick Eggle Berlin (essentially a nicer PRS than a PRS).

Yeah man, it's me that's getting married. We'd both been fairly laid back about it until the missus put on "Weddings from hell" when we got back from the pup last night. All of a sudden it kind of hit home to both of us that it's only 3 weeks away. Obviously I'll have to wait for a while after the wedding before I could afford them, but I'm very interested.

BTW - 2 days after the wedding my folks are catching the ferry over to Holland (with their bicycles) and then turning left and heading north until they get to the top of Finnmark. If you see a couple of hippies on bikes, say hello.

Would you consider swapping a couple of your pups (2 coil tapped HB's) for around 100 or so Fender pole pieces? I'd pay for the postage and the difference in cost. (depending on how much the difference is - got a wedding to pay for in what is now 25 days )

Remember when you're drilling that the forstner bit has a spike in the middle that sticks out further than the main part of the bit. Be careful not to drill too far down as you'll stick the spike through the otherside.
