After cutting out the headstock I realized that saga finish was mildly frightening... it left a few scorch marks as a result of the friction. Anyhow, after getting the headstock shaped (in a modified Strat style on a Tele body) and that sealer sanded off, I realized that going with just the bare wood was exactly what I was looking for. So I ended up putting a natural stain on it (Varathane Gel, it works super bad) and then topping it off with some Polymerized tung oil from Lee Valley tonight. It's not quite dry yet, but the results so far look quite promising.
