  1. A semi-transparent sheet of plastic with a pattern similar to flame maple is put on a guitar, then painted over, similar to the fabric finish people do here. Since it's a picture of a flamed grain it's a "foto flame."
  2. As of about three months or so ago they were still in business. Beats me why their website (http://www.kahlerinternational.com) is down.
  3. That I can't help you with Althought I know that one of the guys here is doing a blue quilt Ibanez RG7621. Check the Finish/Inlays section for a thread about that. I can't remember the cat's name (I THINK it's "ampAge") but I know it's linked from here somewhere.
  4. I think flamingo veneer is unofficial veneer supplier of Projectguitar.com. Half of the guys here are getting stuff from them. They seem cool.
  5. I saw some dude do this on "Monster Garage" once. No nothing, purely freehand. The design was about three times as big/complicated as the one on that tele. It was insane. Apparently there are only a handful of guys in hte US that still practice this, most people use pinstriping tape now.
  6. 1. Where do you get your drugs? 2. Do they deliver?
  7. I'm probably between Hobbiest and Player. But gettng better all the time
  8. Hand pinstriping is *SUCH* a cool thing to watch. I actualy wouldn't mind finding someone and apprenticing for something like that.
  9. Yeah, since he hasn't fretted the board yet, the scale length is still totally up in the air. Really all he has to go on is where he wants to put the bridge.
  10. all hail D!!! Inhriter of Kirkitis!!!
  11. You CAN save money building your own guitar if you're willing to cut a lot of corners on materials. If you want to do it first rate you're going to end up spending as much (or *MORE*) that you would just buying a guitar off the shelf, *ESPECIALLY* if you're doing a replica. I think most of the benefit of building a guitar is the satisfaction of building a guitar.
  12. The scale length is the average length of your *STRING* (not neck) from the nut to the saddle. I say average length because due to intonation your strings will probably not have exactly a 25.5", 25.75" or whatever scale. Honestly the length from the nut to the end of the fretboard has no determination whatsoever on your scale length except for the fact that your bridge has to be longer than that. So to answer your question. The scale is anything over 19.5". In other words you have to decide yourself.
  13. I've warned you about hanging out there in the past, haven't I?
  14. The locking nut behind the regular nut is how my first two "real" guitars came equipped. I have a slight preference for them and here's why. I have big hands and I tend to play with my hand angled so that my finger tips are pointing away from the nut. Usually this isn't a proble, but with a typical Floyd nut what ends up happening is if I do a run in the first position (Queensryche's "I Don't Believe in Love" solo comes to mind) I gouge my fingers on the locking nut. It's about as fun as it sounds.
  15. Gabe, shouldn't you be doing newlywed things instead of posting here? g - getting hitched in 2 weeks, 4 days.
  16. Thought so, but I thought it was like one or two years either way. What that means for any of you enterprising young machinesmiths is that you can make and sell Floyd Rose-type bridges without paying Floyd a dime.
  17. Outside of some of the smaller more "boutique" builders I haven't really seen them on a new guitar in a while. does Fender still have exclusive distribution rights? Anyway, I'm pretty sure the patent time is almost up, anyway. Technically that means no more "licensed" trems
  18. Materials vary WILDLY (quality of steel used) as do construction techniques (pressed, forged, etc., etc.) and dimensions.
  19. That's a HUGE brush you're painting with. I wouldn't say "stay away from all licensed Floyd copies," especially since I haven't seen a non-licensed floyed in like 90 bajillion years (actually 4-5). That has nothing to do with the Jackson, trem, just saying.
  20. Hobo Nah, Marine. Very little difference
  21. I've given some thought to this. Anybody know how to wire up a push/pull pot that adds the bridge p/u to any combination? I've seen it done before. When the pot is "off" it's a bypass and the switching works as normal. But when it's "on" the bridge p/u is added to whatever is selected.
