  1. damn i feel like an idiot lol. i searched for a stereo cable on all the major online music stores but since i didnt know what theyre called i wasnt able to find one. and thats why i wanted the XLR.

i think ill still do the splitter box so i can do each output to separate signal chains, switch outputs to signal chains, combine outputs to a single chain, and what not----i havent put a whole lot of thought into that part

  2. whats up guys? i just got my internet back so i should be around more often

im hoping to start building a guitar in a few months when i save up the cash. i was thinking about doing stereo wiring with an XLR cable to a homemade splitter box that would run the 2 signals to 2 different amps. i know that the XLR has 3 "leads" for hot, ground, and negative so im not sure if i could just arrange it so its 2 positives (one from each PUP) and then a ground

advantages: one cable coming out of the guitar yet still stereo, onboard preamps in the splitter box, easier to manage and control since it would be splitted on my pedalboard.

disadvantages: i would also have to make a back up mono-wired output jack

BUT is it possible with and XLR? i was also thinking of a stereo 1/4" cable but i cant seem to find any.

  3. i dont mean to jack this thread, but i dont understand where to put the trim pots in that first circuit

im actually looking for a preamp to build to replace the shitty one on my brice bass, and i dont know what exactly i need. i need something with a bass and treble control (2 holes)

  4. returning the PUPs would be the easiest way and get something made for a 5 string. if the PUPs wont fit in the cavity thats made for that string spacing, they probably wont sound good/line up with the strings. other than that i cant think of much advice for you. good luck though

  5. lovekraft, thanks for that info. i think ill still go ahead and give it a try. how do you think i should connect that and the tone pot though? just connect the wipers?

matt, i would assume that you ground the pot because if you dont electricity cant pass through it (i believe). it says somewhere on the site to use a tl021 inductor. radioshack doesnt have them btw

  6. youre right about the boost. i guess i should have explained what exactly it does--supposedly--other than assume that yall will look at the site

it cuts the mids from 1-5 on the pot rotation, then cuts everything BUT the mids from 5-10, so in a creative thinking way it boosts the mids. i also cant think of why it wouldnt work, but i wanted to check with yall before i make the investment in the parts

and i do mean the tone and mid cut pot working in conjunction

  7. midboost.gif

i saw this mod a while back that is like a midrange cut/boost (IN ESSENCE), and i was thinking it would be very useful in a bass along with the tone control. i mean, mid cut and high cut, sounds great huh? i dont have all the needed parts for the circuit so i cant just experiment to see what works. i was thinking i would connect the wiper of the new "mid pot" to the wiper of the tone, am i right?

this is the site its on if you want to read about it

  8. possibly. ive just began my search and im going to look around town for a few days for one. ill let you know by mid next week

from a general standpoint, what would you say about the sound of it?

edit: what do you want for it? i have a dunlop hendrix wah and an ibanez phat hed distortion pedal... i think thats all my gear id give up right now. lmk what youd take for it

  9. thanks devon and thedoctor. i wouldnt think of attempting to put LEDs in any guitar neck or fretboard lol (well, until i finish this first project anyway). i wasnt sure if they make special bits that bend like those giant ones they use in house wiring. so freehand-ing it it is! ive got plenty of every kind of bit (my father was an electrician 30 some odd years ago), but thanks for that tip, doc

  10. reaper, thats a good idea with the resistor

i went to radio shack yesterday and the spdt momentary switches only have 2 lugs. i thought that they wouldnt work since its not switching it over, but i thought that it might work so i might go back and try it out. my thinking is that it just removes connection from either or both lugs and therefore cutting off all power to anything in the circuit, am i right? next time im there ill buy one and try it out

  11. my friend wants me to install some LEDs on his pbass. im confident that i can do it all (first time) except for drilling holes sideways. he wants one LED under each string near the bridge but i dont know how i would make a hole from the central cavity out to each little hole that i would drill to install the LEDs. is there some kind of special tool or bit, or do i just have to angle a normal drill and bit to where i can get the wires to where the battery would be? hope this makes sense

  12. while watchin the local rock show tonight, i thought of something but i dunno how it would work---if it would work at all

what if you had a momentary pushbutton spdt switch wired as a killswitch. on a strat you could have it as a killswitch partnered with a "neck-on" switch (bypassing the volume and putting it in right before the output jack). you could have the bridge PUP on with the volume turned down a little and then have the neck-on activated and be playing and tap the button here and there giving you a crazy tremolo kind of sound with the bridge PUP layered behind it. or just something like that

for one though, i know nothing about momentary switches and dont know if that would possibly work. how long exactly is "momentary"?

i think it would be cool as hell. any other ideas? i just need a strat now lol

  13. not to say silvertone is wrong in anyway, but an easier way to do that is to---take your PUP wire and twist the end (as always) take your new wire and do the same, then twist them together, solder, then like bend the 2 at the base to the sides of one of the wires, then wrap it real good with electrical tape. the heat shrink way is a little cleaner but you can make this way turn out real nice also
