  1. Marking out bridge Test fit of bridge to make sure it's in the right place... holes only about 1mm deep so bridge does look slightly off... fully drilled holes... deep enough too... time to decide what colour to paint!!! also... forgot to add... I don't seem to be able to edit previous post and not sure how to resize the pics on here so if anyone wants to shed light please do... or edit previous post!! Ta!
  2. reet... http://www.hugill.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMG_20110404_131745.jpg this is the body after first maul ready for 2 singles or 2 humbuckers, the crap on the bottom is filler... large hacked hole from the fatory putting a earth wire to the bridge... http://www.hugill.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMG_20110404_132823.jpg This is the body after 2nd maul today and sanding of filler on the end... much more room for the third pick up... gonna be quite close to the bridge tho... the 2 holes just near the bottom of the hole is where the bridge will be going... gone for a wraparound one... should work out nicely... http://www.hugill.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMG_20110404_133344.jpg This is the proposed layout of the pups... got a strat scratch plate somewhere so I'll see if I can line them up similar... though i think i may just go for straight as per brian may guitar in previous link... http://www.hugill.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMG_20110404_133404.jpg Closeup on pup... rail magnet... apparently reasonably loud too... think i'm going to attempt one of the brian may guitar layouts with the 6 switches... Making the scratch plate out of 2 sheets of hips plastic glued together to give the proper thickness... that'll be white and the hardware's gonna be black.... what colour should i finish the guitar in??? thinking black or possibly a really dark blue... or should i put some patterns on it.... AAArrrggghhhh... who knows!!! why didn't pics work? damn site went down... grr... ass... fixed...
  3. damn... Brian May pickup wiring... can i squeeze 3 pickups into the tiny guitar....
  4. ebay link similar guitar I bought it to practice doing up a guitar as it was only £15... I currently have... 4 other guitars in bits and a les paul custom 2 that i changed the pickups on... This one is going to be a full resto type effort with a few mods along the way... I'm planning on changing frets and nut etc just to basically learn how to do it... looking at the price on that I'm kinda wishing i hadn't pulled it apart now! lol... altho it had a big chunk out og the headstock which i'm currently building back up and with me changing the bridge I've got the ground hole in it fillered and drying... as well as the rest of the drill holes... was initially going to be a scratchplate replacement job only but the more i've looked at it the more i've thought i might as well have a go as if i screw it up i only paid £15 for it rather than £150 if you know what i mean... The other project gutars are a vintage les paul (which is in my other thread... bit scared about fooking that one up more than i already have!) a johnny brooks tele... which was a really nicely made guitar for £50 but the electrics were shocking... as in the neck pickup went after 20mins.. tho the bridge pup sounded really nice... i made the mistake of saying... "I'm gonna paint that" and a year on i still haven't managed to prime it yet!! lol... I though with this one as it's plywood (the crappy layered wood... dead easy to chisel the body out!) I would make a pretty much throw away guitar to pracice my building / soldering skills! still need to decide on 2 singles or 2 humbuckers... was planning on making it almost look the same with the individual on / off switches too!! need to find out about replacing the nut.. but i'll need to sort a pic out of that!
  5. i really don't think it is the same as those pickups... wish they were like!!
  6. well the pickups can be sold if anyone want's em! I'm replacing them with a couple of single coil rails that i've had sitting around for a previous project that hadn't come to fuition... or maybe some humbuckers... i've got a small pile of them from all the cheap guitars i seem to buy and pull apart and never finish!! lol... I wasn't sure of the string height etc and I realised that there would be absolutely no chance of using the strat style bridge... unless I maybe shaved the neck down a bit to lower the height that way... but tbh... it cost me £15... not gonna break my back trying to do stuff like that to use a strat bridge... looking now at one of the wraparound stoptail type bridges just need to work out how to ground it or wether to bother or not!! still want to keep the on/off switches per pick up so need to look into how to wire them all up together!
  7. damn... was hoping that wasn't the case... bit of a rethink needed now.... cheers for the answer... glad i asked rather than ploughing on ahead!!
  8. I'm currently butchering together a kay audition (think that's right... read cheap) guitar that i bought for £15... it had a les paul (used in loosest terms) style bridge / tail piece and I'm thinking of replacing it and getting either a bridge tailpiece in one or a strat style hard tail... as i was planning on moving it further down the body than the original bridge will this make it difficult to tune up properly due to shift in scale length? if it will cause problems i'll guess i'll stick with the original...
  9. http://www.hugill.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/IMG_20110128_144212.jpg finally got round to sanding it... thinc it's gonna end up a relic style guitar as I'm struggling to get the rest of that sealer off and it's gone really lumpy around the edge at the bottom... and by relicing I mean that I'm just gonna stick some hardware on it and some pickups and probably deal with it later on!! now... just gonna have to have a dig around and see what I've got... got plenty of stuff... crap... should vet pics more before i post em... This is still damp from where i gave it a once over with a damp cloth to get most of the dust off... will post a drier pic shortly... doh!
  10. hmm... still not sure if i want the relic effect... I'll sand it a little and see how it looks as there's more gouges and stuff than the pics show... and as I used a heatgun to take the laquer off there's some weird bubbly bits that i definitely need to sand out a bit before i can do anything... bit of a bargain this guitar as it was £90, including a 2x12 carlsbro amp... amp was knackered but i built myself a tube amp and use the speakers in a 2x12 cab!
  11. that's definitely an option... those guitars look mint!!! (good if you aren't in the uk!!) would definitely be cheaper that what i'm thinking of doing.... although i think i need to have good think about what i want to do... as I say i'm thinking of painting a japanese type scene so I'll have a practice and if it looks poo i'll probably do this instead!
  12. reet... Managed to finish off the scraping.... will start the sanding next week... weather permitting... I'm planning on some nice EMG h3 pickups.... mainly cause they'll be easier to paint over if i choose to with the added benefit of them sounding awesome... should really try to sort out what other hardware I'll be using... really tempted to paint these too... any ideas???
  13. didn't quite get finished... will try to finish enough for sanding next week... woo hoo!!! looking forward to finishing this.... decided to go with some emg's so it's gonna work out expensive!!!
  14. tempted as that's the easy way out.... I'll finish stripping the goop off it today and have a think...
  15. soild colour as a base then maybe some graphics on the top... I have a chinese kanji tattoo for monkey and i'm really tempted to put that on.... but i'm stupidly thinking of using glitter but i may change my mind on that... I'm also tempted to do a traditional japanese style painting on it...
  16. will have to try the lighter fluid as the isopropyl alcohol isn't brilliant but it is out of date!! might as well take it all back to wood as it already is in parts... as i say there's a bit of bubbling so i think i'm gonna have to cut them out anyway and fill and sand it... it's gonna be a big job but it saves me going out and spending another £400 on another les paul... also get to make it one of a kind too!!! thinking of some irongear pick ups.... they sound awesome and they're only £50 for a pair of zebra humbuckers!!! muahahahahhaha....
  17. Aaaaaaaand... back on topic!! How unsticky do I need to make the guitar so I can start sanding? Spent about 3 hrs yesterday scraping and using isopropyl alcohol and got about half way... its still marginally tacky but only very slightly compared to pretty much being able to pick up the guitar by putting your hand flat Long the sticky bit... when I say tacky it feels like it was once stick but nothing would actually stick to it....
  18. Not planning on staining... if I was going to do that I'd start with a new body!! Tbh I've tried solvents on glue before and it usually doesn't work too well any way... so I'll try the scraping.... As to the Mrs losing me and being obsessed with modifying... I build guitar pedals... nearly all my guitars have new pick ups... I have 4 in pieces... my danelectro is now fretless... I'm learning 3d graphics and digital art... and I'm in the process of building a portable Dreamcast... lol...
  19. Ummm.... I'm not hugely sure his to take that.... lol...
  20. i'm using regargables so i'm making sure theyre fully charged and i'll try it again... grr
  21. I've got a schecter she devil which has the duncan design active pickups in it... i did a really dumb thing and took the battery out with it still plugged into the amp... now it's really quiet... have i fooked them up?
  22. On my other lp (the one that works!!! lol) I've currently dropped it to b and for some reason I can't get the 5th fret on the bottom b string to sound right... it sounds slightly flat... as i don't have the proper tools to do it atm does anyone have an idea why this is? bear in mind it is just that one fret that seems to be out... if i go back to c sharp (damn mac keyboards!!) and play the third fret it sounds fine.... is this the neck not being straight? it's an epi and has the std plastic nut on it would it help to change this? ta peeps...
  23. Westhemann - cheers for that link on scraping.... quite interesting and I'll deffo be giving it a go... once I've finished scraping I'll sand it with 150 / 220 and then start filling.... what is the best sort of filler? or are they all pretty much the same? cheers peeps!!
  24. Doh..... explains why it seemed to take forever to get nowhere! This bodes well... lol....
