  1. Hello again, I have stripped 3/4 of the paint on my guitar and have noticed a few small spots where sealer chipped off with the paint as it was scraped off. Is this bad, or should the sealer be redone anyway? Should I fill the spots with sealer when i'm done stripping paint or should I strip the rest? How would I strip it, would furniture stripper strip sealer just like it did on the paitn when i stripped that? Thanks for the help.
  2. I have been looking at parts on this "statosphere" store on Ebay every single day for about a few weeks now. I am still amazed as the guitar bodies and necks just keep rolling in daily one by one. Where do all of these "extra" parts and bodies come from? Are they replacements straight from fender or salvaged ones from the real deal's? Or are they "fakes"? How hard could it be to make all of these bodies the sam as they were in that year, stamp them, slap inspection stickers and stuff on them and sell them for $200+ ? This makes me cringe when I think what could be the truth, but may not be the truth. Who knows, i'm certainly no expert. By the way, there are very few parts on there now, about a week ago there were over 100 bodies/necks, cases, bridges, hardware, and other parts/electronics. They usually added them as they were sold. Maybe they are finally running out?
  3. I would say down to the wood only because it would be way more even...However, is this going to require a grain filler after? I am not experienced with any grain fillers. Which would you recomend for a completely new repaint?
  4. This is hard, there is way more paint on here than I thought. How can i chemically strip the paint? I saw the tutorial, but it never said what chemical it was......??? Am i missing something?
  5. Thanks.....might lightly use acetone to remove upper layers, then sand for fine work.
  6. So I have black original paint, and a thin coat of blue paint on my fender. Without using heat, what ways can I strip it evenly? What would happen if I wiped paint with lacquer thinner? Would it hurt the guitar when it made it down to wood? It would take the paint off quickly though. Help please? thanks.
  7. I look at Fender Stratocaster dealers online and in my town and I notice hundreds of different years and models of pickups. I am refinishing a Agave Blue Strat replica and I need some pick-ups. I want original strat pickups. I have no lcue where ot start, and which ones bring what sounds. This is one of my first guitars and it is my first experience with electronics in a guitar. I see Delta Tone, Vintage, Custom Shop, Texas Choice....holy crap there are hundreds of different kinds..where do I start? Is there a website with them that could help explain the different ones and their tones and stuff? Or can one of you just help me out...Thanks. I don't know if my type of music played on it matters but if it does let me know.
  8. I've been sanding with 200 and I have the paint where I want it. I filled a small ding and sanded it. Now what is the final grit it should be sanded to before laying paint? I don't want too deep of scratched that show through paint, or too thin that dont hold the paint good. I am ready to finish the wood. What grit? Thanks.
  9. Thanks a ton! I'm ognna sand it quite a bit but not to the wood, then lay the base for the metalcast, then metalcast, and then clear clear clear. Thanks again. Maybe a thread in the project section will be done.
  10. Thanks for the quick help.I understand now. I will probably sand it. Once that is all done and body imperfections are fixed, do I go straight to a regular primer for tha paint or do I use some kind of adhesion promoter? What is the final grit I should sand with before primer/paint? One more thing. When I repaint it, is there going to be a bad outcome if paint gets in all of the hardware/screw holes? Should they be plugged temporarily? Thanks again.
  11. So I have a black squier being repainted. I am doing it Blue Metalcast. The finish has a "fish-eye" in two spots, and there are many scratches on the surface and a couple dings in the wood. I need to know what I have to do to prepare the body for new paint. Do I slightly sand the existing paint and paint primer and new paint over it or do I sand it down to the wood? What grits should I start out with if I'm going to the wood, and then what grit do I use to prepare the wood for primer etc. Thanks for any help.
  12. Hello again, I have decided to go for the Krylon Metalcast ebcause of the chrome sheen to it. How many poeple have had good experience with this stuff enough to tell me how to use the basecoats for it and everything? I know it has a basecoat/primer/adhesive for the metalcast that you put under it, but do I put a colored basecoat as well? I know I will be clearing the finish. When I sand the stock black, am I supposed to go down to the wood? Then after that do i have to primer before putting the basecoat/metalcast primer? All help is appreciated.
  13. I appreciate the help guys. As for blowing my money, I thank you for telling me that I am (not sarcasim). I understand what I am spending but to me, it's just being able to look at that "squier" and say, I painted this, that satisfies me. The only money I am spending is to buy the paint itself. The rest is being done by me. I have painting equipment and I am a decent painter. I used to paint cars. So am I still blowing my money if it's just for paint? I don't think so but please tell me if you still think so. I am pretty sure chrome blue has a silver basecoat or a black primer basecoat. It is too late to not paint it because the paint has been bad for a while so it's apart now, so either way, it has to/had to be painted...Thanks for the help keep it coming.
  14. Does anyone know where I can purchase factory Fender colors? I am particularly looking for chrome blue. Thanks. I have tried reranch......no chrome blue.
  15. I was just gonna say I like thee 22 fret better because the 21 fret squier one doesnt come in the white wood I want with the blue. You are right about the electronics. I was going to upgrade them. I need the body painted though. It's black right now and the finish is horrible so I may go with blue and not change anything else just so I will have nice paint on it like I want. Any clue on the price just for them to paint the body? Maybe an estimate?
  16. Hello everyone. You may remember a topic a month or so ago on painting a stratocaster. I asked what types of paints to use etc. Well anyways the guitar is fully apart and I have a few questions. The guitar is a Squier I picked up for cheap that I would like to pain Fender Chrome Blue. It has a rosewood fretboard however and only 21 frets cuz it's a squier. A standard strat has 22 frets, and I would want the white colored wood with chrome blue. So here we go, if I bought the standard strat neck would it fit the sames as the squier neck? The dimensions are identical correct? Also is there a possible place to purchase or have the paint mixed? Would Fender sell it to me? Would Fender paint it? Thanks for the help.
  17. Thanks guys. Yes I know how long to wait. The automotive lacquer I will be using takes about 3-4 weeks to fully cure. I will wait about 5 weeks. I will probably assemble it myself and thanks for the handle tip.
  18. Should I have a shop put it back together after I paint it so I know it's done right? A very good friend of mine owns a local guitar only shop. This would be the smartest idea right?
  19. Thanks so much for the reply and help so far. Keep the tips coming1 Looks like my auto paint is the way to go! (so far)
  20. Hey everyone. I am new here so would start by saying hi to everyone. Been eying this message board forever drooling all over peoples work. Anyways I have an old Fender Squier that I would like to paint. I paint automotive vehicles and scale models for hobbies so I know a bit about painting and getting a good finish. My questions is: When I take apart my guitar, neck and all (complete disassembly) and paint it, when it is put back together I going to have any possible problems in the future with the neck not being straight or out of angle? This is my only fear. I have never painted a guitar before. Would it be ok to use automotive lacuer or enamel followed by a clear? I don't want to polyurethane or anything but if it's better I would try it. Like said, I need all tips you can give on painting guitars like types/brands of paint, methods, and tips. Thanks guys.
