  1. Thanks everyone!!! Besides the good information, just NOT hearing dire predictions helps a lot. Any thoughts on the pickup cavity/pickguard shielding? I'm pretty sure having it is not a problem...but, I'll experiment around some. Again, thanks!!!!! Gery
  2. I'm not replacing pickups...rather, I'm putting some in a new body. These (Fender Texas Specials) came with short rubber tubes instead of springs for adjustment. Also, the provided adjustment screws are too large (shaft diameter) for the pre-existing holes in the actual pick-ups (not the covers). I've seen cracked pickup bases that are then difficult to adjust, so I want to avoid that. The simple answer seems to get narrower screws for adjustment, but given the expertise here, I thought I'd check. Also, are the rubber adjustment spacers an okay way to go, or are springs better? Oh, and while on the subject, is it good to shield the pick-up cavities as well as the pot/switch cavity? If so, also shield the pickguard? I've already done this, but again, I'm relying on your knowledge.
  3. Well, all the tubes check out fine...well into the "good" zone on the tester. I'll try some of the other suggestions now. And yes, Paul's posted picture is what mine looks like. I've only seen ocilliscopes in old sci-fi movies...so that one may be beyond me. Thanks, Gery
  4. The box still has the schematic pasted inside. It's too old to remove and copy, but if there is any info there that I can forward, I'll study it. Again, I appreciate the interest and consideration you all are showing. Gery
  5. Hey Guys, Thanks for all the replies and help. The model amp is: HARMONY 306-A (two channel with trem), one 12" speaker Looks to be 6 tubes...all labeled "Japan": (Two) 7025 12 AX7 These are shielded (removable shields) (Two) 6V6 (One) 6SH7 Encased in metal (One) 5Y3 The five I can see all light up. There is no change in any when I turn the 2 tremelo knobs. All the connections look intact. No obviously broken resistors or capacitors. I did change out the potentially lethal ungrounded powercord for a grounded one and grounded it to the chassis. I'll take the tubes for testing. Any more suggestions greatly appreciated.
  6. An old HARMONY tube amp with tremelo. It's been all recapped. Bit "hummy" but works well except for the tremelo. It worked until the fuse blew. There's a jack for the footswitch, but the effect worked without any footswitch. Since the fuse blew and has been replaced, no trem effect available. I've inspected for loose connections oe signs of a short...nothing evident. Suggestions? Perhaps a tube? Since I haven't the slightest idea of how the effect is produced, I have exhausted my range of solutions. Again....any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
  7. The sellers of guitar parts have just realized what other entrepeneurs have --the sum of the parts can add up to more than the whole. Someone might not have $1200 for an American Fender, but do have $325 for a neck. Of course, it is usually a very expensive way to get something, unless the buyer is VERY canny. The process, if done for fun instead of cost effectiveness can be fun. Although most of the stringed victims are unnoteworthy, It is unfortunate that some really good guitars are being canabalized.
  8. Thanks. I'm still vacillating (not vaseleneing!!!). I've given some consideration to abandoning the Fender bridges in favor of a Wilkenson. I appreciate the comments. Re: the "abuse limitations" -- I have seen two different strats' vintage bridges get strained and sprung. Also, I hear about the POTENTIAL tuning limitations of the floaters. Anyway, all the info is great to get. Thanks
  9. I'm ordering a new (Warmoth)body that can be routed for various bridge types. I have a pristine vintage bridge (six screw) but wonder about any advantages to eith the two pin Fender or maybe even the Wilkenson. I don't use trem much...but want the option kept open. Probably use the wood block technique for a temporary hardtail set up. Thanks for any replies that I gert before I commit to routing option. Best--
  10. Does anyone have expereince with Pogreba aluminum resonators? What's yiour ideas on the subject.Thans a million!!
  11. I skipped the wrap around bridge and went to a top mount (from Ste-Mac) that is more compatible with a strat neck. Turned out great. Alder body, black walnut pickguard, single rail pick-up with back routing. Carry it in my car and whip it out and play while waiting for appts. etc. Thanks everyone!
  12. Thanks, everyone. The informastion is great and has been helpful.
  13. I'm making a small solid body for travel. I have a Fender Strat neck. I'd rather skip the tremelo and through body stringing. Any real problems with using a wrap around combination bridge? Other (polite) suggestions regarding bridge options?
