Thanks for the advice. Yes I picked up some new valves today from Mega Music and...

Before I swapped the tubes I decided to try again first. I turned the volume knob up all the way and back and forth and Ta Da it burst back to life, however it went bad again after a while. Something to note, it was making loud crackling sounds even with both channel volumes all the way down

First thing I did was change the three preamp tubes and it was good as gold. Then I did an experiment. First I noted that the pins on one of the original valves looked tarnished and suspected a bad connection. I tried that valve in my Blues Jnr and it worked just fine. Now I have the Eminar with all the old valves and its working perfectly, just bad connections!

So now I have plenty of spare valves and I've learnt a few things

There's actually very low sound with Volume controls up all the way

Hope this question is okay here...

I have an old Eminar amplifier which I haven't used for a few years and there's no sound, nothing at all. Everything looks okay and there's no burning smells, all valves are glowing like normal, just no sound at all. I thought it must a short in the output but can't see any issue. I might take it to a tech but I want to at least have a go at finding the problem myself first. Anyone here got suggestions?

I think others have said much the same thing but here's my 2 cents

I use a radius beam in a jig to keep it straight, same when I sand the radius in the first place. But if I wanted to get a higher degree of fret levelling I would use a flat bar (Got to get around to buying one) If the fretboard has been radiused really well then there should be very minimal requirement for the flat bar, and less fear of ruining the radius

That's what I was thinking, or 25 1/2 inch scale with 21 frets

Is the body meant for a 25.5" scale? What length do you get from bridge to nut when the neck is in place?

From what you're saying a 24 fret neck would make the issue worse

I would think it's a trivial variation

I think we have all pondered over how to have a broader range, like tuning lower, 7-strings and so forth but this is nuts (although its worth a look)

If its worth mentioning, to me Weldon is just like SuperGlue but thicker and not quite as strong

I had some but it got punctured somehow and I was left with a hollow blue tube

I would think the amount it could move around under string tension would not affect intonation all that much, but cause issues with tuning stability and maybe buzzing or rattling

Just met an interesting person...

He worked at the Maton factory in the early days and helped develop their Fretless Bass. He said they had a process like microwaving that simulated seasoning the timber. He really liked my Semi accoustic guitars and appreciated the difficulty and skill involved to make them. It was a rare treat to talk to someone face to face who talks guitars!

That's one gorgeous guitar! Having just made a Tele myself I have a lot more appreciation for them (Being a LP guy)

Got around to buying a Tele bridge for My Strat but I completely forgot that the strings come through at a different spot. I intended to get a Top-Loading bridge to skirt around this problem but never mind I did it my way

First thing I did was record with the Gotoh bridge. Then I marked where the strings go through the body and drilled on an angle to where they come through at the back of the guitar. I didn't trust myself to get the angle correct so I did some science and it worked out very well

I don't like the look of it that much, a sexy curvy body with a square boxy thing in the middle. But it does sound more like a Telecaster, has more bite, like picking close to the bridge. The only difference now to a Telecaster is the body shape, so yeah should sound just like a Tele. I don't know if this setup will be permanent but I will leave it there for the life of the strings at least

I'm pretty sure some makers set the distance of the tuners out such that the length of string from peg to nut doesn't match an overtone of the guitar, to avoid 'ring-on' Hard to achieve with a 12-string though!

A couple of my early guitars I put the pegs close together to help the guitar stay in tune but it looks dumb and is hard to tune

I've just been comparing The Tele with My Strat...and then my Fender Stratocaster (all on bridge pickup)

The sparkly chime that the Tele has, I first noticed it when I used a piece of that Oregon as a centre block in a semi-accoustic I made. I did this before I put the back on. I played it with centreblock in, and then with it out. That's what made me want to make a whole guitar out of it. Its kind of like it has a touch of overdrive, hmmm I will have to check the ohms

The experiments revealed the Tele has a warmer tone than My Strat, and then the Fender Strat has a warmer tone than that. They all sound great and I had to remind myself that the Fender has a stock Strat bridge pickup whereas the other two have Tele bridge pickups. My conclusion was the Fender sounded the best!

I think it sounds pretty darn good. The body wood is Oregon (Douglas Fir) which is over 100 years old and it has a sparkly chime to it. That's what I think but I'm keen to compare it with other Teles. The two guys I know that influenced me to make it are both named "John" LOL and of course both have Tele's. One is a regular guy who has just one guitar and the other is a professional musician who back in the day was invited to join INXS

Thanks, yes I've been coming round to that frame of mind rather than beating myself up for the little mistakes here and there. In any case there are some things I've done right like the string action. There is no excessive buzz anywhere except the 21st fret on the three middle string when set really low
