  1. Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 Picture 4 Well, the guy that had planned on taking this off my hands already has more blanks than he knows what to do with, so it seems I will be selling this elsewhere. I had planned on using this blank for a bass I was building, warp and all, but came across another that had the wood combinations I was looking for. It's 46" x 4" x a bit over 2 3/4". The warping is actually side to side, not front to back. Planing it out would be possible, but you wouldn't have a centerline that would run parallel to the laminations. With a straightedge held on the side of the blank touching either end, there is a maximum of about 2 mm space between the blank and the straightedge. There is a small (1 1/2" * 1/8" * 1/8") tearout near the center and very slight tearout and wave (from a crappy hand planer) over one of the faces. Once these small imperfections are planed out, it should bring the thickness right to around 2 3/4". You could easilly get 2 bass necks out of it and probably 3 guitar necks. There is nearly $100 total in the blank. I'm asking $70 plus shipping for it. Reply here or email me at cerberi@gmail.com if you are interested. P.S. In the first couple of pictures, the wings were not glued to the neck, so there won't be any signs of a joint in that area.
  2. jnewman - The wings actually have not been shaped at all yet, other than with the band saw. A jointer will be used to true up the edges to be glued on the neck. erikbojerik - It wasn't really warped beyong repair, but it was warped side to side, rather than front to back. So, that would cause the laminates to arch across the face of the neck. I just didn't want anything less than perfect for my first instrument. I had a guy on Talkbass lined up to buy it, but he already had more necks than he could use at the moment. So, if anyone's interested... Thanks, everyone else for your interest.
  3. Well, I've been lurking these forums for a while now, and I suppose it's about time I unveil my project here. A few of you have already seen it over at the Luthier's Corner on Talkbass.com. I hope that posting a blog link is cool with you guys. I just didn't feel like making all of those pictures into separate posts on here. Here it is. The archive links are at the bottom, so you can see the previous posts that were moved onto the second page. P.S. This is also my first instrument, and my first attempt at woodworking in general. So, be easy on me .
  4. I, personally, taper all the way through the body. If you don't know what I mean, here are some examples: Tapered through the body Tapered to the body
  5. I'm really loving that spalted burl. Sadly, it's just too small for the project I'm working on.
  6. You seem to have quite a decent selection. I may wind up buying an ebony fingerboard for an unlined fretless 4 from you soon. I'm also eyeing a couple of the curly maple tops . Don't pay much mind to this post, as I'm posting here more for myself than anything, so that I will be able to find the thread later. First post, by the way.
  7. It looks really nice! What method did you use for cutting out your neck blank? Table saw, I suppose? I'm working on my first bass at the moment (4 string neckthrough) and haven't yet come to the neck shaping stage, so I have been wondering what the best method for that would be.
  8. 2 (3, sorta) Small Updates: 5 new images The top body wing was unclamped and trimmed up. It's now ready to be routed with a flush cut bit around its edges. The bottom wing is now clamped and drying. I also made a simple Fenderesque logo for the headstock (back, most likely).
  9. Not with a straightedge held to it. It has about 2 millimeters of bow in it. Soon I will glue up a second one with the wood I have left. The one in the pictures will go towards a more experimental bolt-on project. That way, if it ever decides to bow more, or even break in half, I could just scrap it instead of ruining a bass.
  10. Here Are The Pictures (http://tbbassprogress.blogspot.com) This was directed more towards the people at Talkbass.com, but since I've found this site I will post it here as well. Anyways, for those of you who enjoy looking at progress pics, they are all posted at the link above. Leave a few comments if you would, as I'm always extremely bored and in need something to read. - Cerb P.S. I was just wondering how old you were when you started your first bass project. I'm glad that I've gotten a nice head start at the age of 15 . P.P.S. I will also be posting the updates here in this thread for those of you that would like to follow the progress but don't want to look at the blog more than needed.
