  1. i am using teek for some binding and was planning on using some form of clear coat wether it be laquer or poly and was wondering if teek leeks? haha i made a funny but seriously does it? i might just have to tung oil this one if it does.
  2. im curious as to if it is as good as the other types of finishes. any one know the pros and cons?
  3. i just thought id ask before i order one, they are selling the saw and box for about 80$ wich to me is alot of cash for a little back saw and miter box! but its a nice system so it seems so i guess i will just have to bight the bullet unles you guys know where i could get a set up a little cheaper? i could build one but if i figure my time it would be just as quick to buy and a lot less thinking involved. thanks for your help rye
  4. yeh i found that program on a guys site! he does some cool stuff with sewer pipe! and i used his idea for a binding jig for my dremel except o found some cooler pvc products to use that work easier! but yeh i geuss i could use that program, except than i spent 15$ for nothing! and that would just bother me. but i will see if i can stil download it.
  5. how about a 61' sg with the ebony tail piece for 350$ or a 77 mustang for 150$ early italian crybaby 60's? 100$ maestro phase shifter100$
  6. yeh thats probably what i'll do , i have the plexi glass. next week i''m having a freind who has a machine shop make me my templates out of aluminum maybe i will just wait til then and have him do it cause hes got all the proper tools to measure that acurately.
  7. thanks i will have to look into this
  8. thanks, yeh i know a 32 isnt accurate enough, maybe i should just get the ruler from stewmac. i was planning on eventualy getting it but i jsut havent got the cash right now. oh well i'll see what i can lay out on the wood, and then i can compair it to another 25 in fret board i bought. then i can see how acurate i could get before i start cutting. thanks for your help though
  9. thank you, that helps me alot!! now of course i have more questions 1. where do i get it from? 2. about how many guitars will a gallon do? 3. what type of spray gun would work? i dont want to buy a crapper! but i also dont want to spend a furtune. 4 my compresor is a six gallon ya think thats big enough or should i get a bigger one? 5. also what is the pot life of the poly? thanks
  10. ok so heres the deal, i bought the no sweat fret caculator from stew mac. its really cool but here is my problem. the measurements in inches are in tenths, for example the first fret at 1.933". now i have a ruler that has tenths but it does not have .05s so i dont think i can get to accurate with it im doing a 25" scale should i just convert to metric? or is there a mathmatical formula that can change tenths to 16ths or 32nds? i knew i shouldve payed more attention in math class! any help would be greatly apprietiated as i plan on making the fret board tommorow. thanks, rye
  11. heck yeh! that was the first one i went to! he used to live 15min. from me! i was gonna visit his shop but then i noticed they already moved! but yeh i liked thier tour, i love the fact that its all family owned . thanks for putting up them tours bri, i look at a few every day! there awsome! the cool thing about bill l. is that he makes good stuff and the prices are very reasonable! i'll take them over a new gibson anyday! such great quality to!
  12. well tonight i glued a sample peice to a scrap of mahogany tommorow i will try to break the joint! and see how it held? if its a good joint then i will definetly use it! i have enough for about six maybe eight nice fret boards! i agree with wes, i think the oils will increase playability! but there is only one way to find out! this guitar is gonna rock! its my standard design( offset prs/jbass) but its semi hollow with a carved mahogany top and two f-holes, also a mahogany neck. so far all i have left to do is fret baord/ inlays, a little binding, and finish it! of course find some cash somewhere to buy the finishing supplies and pickups! (wich will be bill lawrence)
  13. well then , heck david koresh makes a nice stinkin mcarty! well is this david berfore or after the government torched him and his folowers to death? oh well, maybe not a can of worms we want to get into? my faves were the g&l tour and the hammer tour!
  14. hmmm maybe, but ebony is very oily also thats what makes it nice for fret boards your hands can glide along i think, but i maybe wrong
  15. hey this stuff is cool! it looks kinda like a grey/green mahogany in color. but it is much stronger! i cut pieces 2 1/2 x 3/8 x 36 and it is stiff like ebony and has an oily grain like ebony so i figure its gotta be good for a fret board? strength wise definetly! tone wise im not sure? has any one ever used it? i know you can glue it just fine, my landloard used to make furniture out of it. the teek i got was from an old "liberty ship" you know the ones our guys got blown up in from the nazi's (them jerks) . it smells great! kinda like fresh tobacco (but i dont smoke, i just love the smell of a fresh cigarette, im wierd!) i might try it but if it sucks please let me know soon cuase im gonna cut it tommorrow! (i didnt mean smoking, i meant the wood for a fret board.) thanks, rye
  16. right on dude! i love my dremel! all i need now is the big building! know where i can find one of those? maybe home depot? or lowes?
  17. cool, thanks. do they have a web site? could i get it in the states?
  18. hey bri, thats pretty cool stuff! id love to send you a tour of my factory! Oh wait i only have a 15 x 30 barn and no kilns or cnc machines. um nevermind. but some day i will have my factory! but i dont want a lot of employes maybe five. it would lose the "feel" of the art if it gets to big. until then i will just drule over everyone elses factories.
  19. hey rhoads, how long does that acid cure laquer take to cure? and how well does it polish? i dont mind if its amber, im doing a semi hollow walnut with carved mahogany top so it would look great with an amber finish! im not one for alot of colors i like to see the woods natural beuty! could you tell me were to purchase this finish? and about what it costs? and how is it aplied? i have an air compressor and an air brush but i think im gonna buy a bigger spray gun something with a bigger fluid bottle. thanks for everyones help! i will post some pics as soon as my two guitars are done!
  20. stew mac is great, i love em but it kills me cause a lot of times i dont need 30$ worth of stuff! i might be getting stuff in two weeks from them so if i do i will let you know. i did some reserching for anyone who wants to buy thier fret press, just order the arbor for 49$ and then order the press through "harbor freight" for 40$ then you save your self like fifty bucks! but you might have to customize the press by drilling a holeand taping in a set screw, but i dont know yet, i will let you know after i buy it!
  21. well i hope you got a receit! you can write it off for taxes!
  22. thanks guys, how much$ are the simtec coatings? im on a very low buget right now. but the stuff sounds like its pretty easy to work with, is it?
  23. hey guys im wondering could you guys give me the names of some of the brands of finish supplies you use, i really dont want to use the aerosol cans any more. and the problem with nitro laquer is that after a few weeks its still soft! is there a better product? i know the nitro looks great but i dont want to have to wait for weeks to finish it! i read in one of the stew mac tutorials with dan e. that he only waited five days to finish sand and pollish the instrument in the tutorial. how? i did a black laquered bass and after four weeks it was still soft! why?
  24. if you think youre gonna build more than just that one guitar its probably worth spending the bucks for the templates they are fast and you basicaly cant screw up! if you have the tools, dremel, drill files. you can make your own out of plexi galss wich you can usually get at most hardware stores. it takees a little time but probably not much longer than freehanding it! and you know the cut will turn out exactly like the template. plus after you make them you have them for many more projects! good luck, and remember measure three times and cut once!
