Ok the new ones work. Those look unbelievable! Looks like you've certainly mastered the art of the recurve.

I can't see any of Crow's pics!!! Any ideas why?
Me neither. Strange...
-
Wow! I can't say I expected it to look all that good with so much black. It works great though. Looks like one of your best carves yet too.
-
Looks beautiful. Always loved walnut. The binding is a nice touch too.
-
That fingerboard's got some great color. Love the wood choices on this build.
-
Absolutely love what you did with the headcap. The whole headstock looks great too for that matter. I usually find 8 in line headstocks to be a bit ridiculous, but for whatever reason this one just works.

if you cant slot a nut - how do you expect to make a fanned fret guitar :?
besides - even pre-slotted nuts need extra slotting and setting up
i can understand people using a straight bridge to avoid having to make one. even so i dont think its a good idea - but doing it the opposite way just to use a pre-slotted nut is ridiculous
That's logical. This is all hypothetical at this point. Just looking for ideas.
-
Out of curiosity, why the perpendicular nut? I can see a perpendicular bridge (so you can easily use off-the-shelf hardware), but I missing the utility of a straight nut/zero-fret.

Pretty much just so you can use a commercially available nut instead of slotting it yourself

Perry's idea would work well if Tremmy had a 16" jointer
If only...
Like the router idea though. I'll probably give that a try

I was wondering how you guys typically go about angling a guitar top like on an Les Paul or similar. I've heard from one person who uses hand planes but that seems inefficient and not very precise. Anyone have a better idea? Thanks.
-
I just checked and the first one he made did have a perpendicular zero fret, but the later ones he did used a perpendicular 8th.
This one:
Anyways, i suppose that proves that its not totally unreasonable with a relatively small difference in scales. I'll just have to do some experimenting now.
-
I was wondering why you never really see multiscale guitars with the nut as the perpendicular fret. Clearly you would be limited to a minor fan because the upper frets would be angled a little ridiculously with a 2 or 3 inch difference in scales, but is there another reason I'm overlooking? I know there was a strandberg that used a perpendicular nut, but that's the only time i've seen it done. Thanks.

That makes more sense. I guess I was overcomplicating this. thanks for the help.

Ok, now I'm confused. How would that factor into this all? By the way I'm looking at 64.8mm string spacing at bridge, 41.78mm spacing at nut, and 49.53mm nut width. Using prosthetas method, which makes sense to me, I get 61.04mm width at 12th. It this off?
-
To expand on what ihocky said, neck width is a function of string spacing at the nut, the bridge and margin either side of the strings. A 48mm nut with a 42mm string spread with a 60mm string spread at the bridge would measure (((60+(48-42))-48)/2)+48 at the 12th fret (57mm in this example). Easy to simplify, but you can see what that means. It just assumes a constant distance from the string to the edge of the fretboard down the entire length. Plug in and go!
Wait would scale length affect this at all?

Very cool. I love the vibe those things have. The tone isn't really anything to write home about. Pretty much what you would expect from that kind of guitar, but honestly theyre so much fun to play it makes up for it.
-
Thank you all. That makes a lot of sense now.
-
hey all I'm working on a 7 string and I can't find any solid plans for a 7 string. Could anyone tell me what a pretty standard width at 12th fret would be for a 7 string with a standard 48mm nut? Thanks.
-
Almost forgot about that tuner...
Nevermind though, I found a good cad drawing of an ibanez K7 in the downloads section. that'll work.
-
Does anyone know where I could find some good plans for a seven string solidbody electric guitar. I've been looking all over and and i haven't been able to find detailed enough plans. If anyone could help it would be great. Body shape doesn't matter. Thanks.

You can see in the picture and the list. Everything except numbers 10, 12 and 18.
Oops didn't notice that. Sorry.

Chrome knobs are gone bump
$30 shipped takes it all.
What all's left?

I mean two people on this forum who have been burned is a pretty big number.
Make that 3. I bought a black limba body blank from him. A month after ordering i still hadn't heard received the wood and he never responded to my attempts at contacting him. I was eventually able to get my money back through paypal, but only after quite a bit of work.
-
That sounds perfect. I hadn't thought of just hammering it. I was stuck on the idea of using a drill press. I love this site...

That looks pretty slick. I'll be very interested to see how this turns out. If it works out well and you decide to sell some I may very well be interested.
