  1. OK. I think im gona do a conical fret board, Screw compound radius. Was messin about playin guitars with 2 necks all week (my eyes are fooked up from a stupid mistake with some cocobolo dust, so no building for the past few days) true Compound board just feels a little odd to me so I rekon a cone it has to be.

Just gotta wait for the blury vision to go, Almost sorted. :D

  2. I would never argue with Mr. Gibbons or Les Paul (god rest his soul).

The 2 most important people in the history of the electric guitar if you ask me.

Without Les paul & Paul bigsby, Leo fender would never have taken such a serious interest in the electric guitar. & given that Les then went on to work with Gibson to design the best guitar ever built I rekon the guy is more important than any other contributer to the whole guitar thing in general.

As for Billy gibbons, Hendrix once described him as the future of music.

he'a a guitar playin - hotrod drivin Jesus in Snake skin boots & sun glasses :D

  3. looking good, But id chamber out more of it. Double necks can get realy heavy. I have one on the go just now & have almost hollowed out the whole top guitar because of previous experiance.

Any idea of the weight of this one at the moment ?

I was hoping someone would "weigh" in on this subject. I don't want it to be too heavy, but I still want there to be enough structure for sustain. Right now I think I've got it at close to 1" around the perimeter and about 3/8" thickness at the bottom of the cavities. Is there a rule of thumb as far as how much material thickness to leave? 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch?

I'm also planning to rout matching shallow cavities into the topwood before I glue that on. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I wouldnt worry about sustain. so long as it is a strong-rigid structure with no movement in the neck you should be fine. Mass does not always equal sustain, look at olah strandbergs guitars, tiny little things but they sustain like a Les paul.

Personally I route out a hell of a lot more than you have here & still have no problems with tone or sustain. Id leave plenty of meat in the bottom guitar for balance, But the top can be hollowed almost completly out. Just leav enough anchorage for your bridge.

  4. Thanks guys... It is still possessed.

You know it threw itself off the bench when I wasn't looking and broke its horn. The epoxy I used to fix it didn't completely harden for 3 weeks...yet worked fine on the very next thing I used it on. The fretboard ended up with 23 frets when I swear I put 24 on it. The head plate seam started to show after several months...I had to make the control plate three times as it kept curling up... The top has moved and revealed more cracks over and over again. I had to strip all the finish off of it because the first finished went milky... I know it was the evil trying to get out.

paulie -- If this helps you like it more it is not an SG. It is as HEAVY as a Les Paul and since the first SGs were Les Pauls it is fitting that this thing is heavy... so think of it as a first run double cut Les Paul possessed.

OK, that kinda makes it more tolerable. The SG standard is far toooo thin i rekon. Like a skirting boars with strings.

This thing looks realy cool but id still have to go with Les paul's thinking on the SG in general. just does not do it for me.

Speaking of things possessed. my family all swear there was a ghost in my house for years, but when I built stevie (my SRV strat) they all rekon it went away. Apart from my old man that is, He rekons its in the guitar now, Says it feels 'funny' when he plays it :D

Billy gibbons talks about a woman that had died in the bed over pearly (his Les paul was stored under her bed before he bought it) & he rekon her soul went into the guitar.

  5. I think Id keep an eye out for an old piece of furniature or an ald crappy cheap guitar. That is a serious difference in colour & the grain being so radically different in direction would bother me.

Hold off & look for some timber elsewhere. damaged furniature. Mangled acoustics, old scraped pianos - that kinda thing. You will find a better match fairly quickly.

  6. I don't usually like spalted anything, but I like this spalted top a lot, something about the colours and balck lines around the grains has a lovely effect, so now it's my turn to say, hurry up and finish the %^&#*^! thing :D

Seriously Muzz. How can you not just fookin love spalt. OK, carving it is a bitch but the results are savage.

Just look at the piks above & tell me its not ultra wood porn :D

Not like its a flook either. Check out mine

Spalt, Its the bees knees baby B)

  7. Good times. Hey that's great about the colour scheme, I think I did mine a little different I'll go and hijack your thread to show you some inbetween steps

Gravy baby. Im doin 2 JS models just now. one of them is Ash finished in blue, Along with a strat in blue with a pearloid pickguard.

Feel free to hijack the crap outa the blue JS when it starts going up. Ash body with an Ash neck & rosewood board. just to see how it sounds you know.

But the black grained blue thing rocks so ill be doin that for its body.

  8. Hey Paulie, I thought you were doing the blue over the black? Maybe on another guitar.

What are you thinking of replacing with cherry red, just the back or front and back?

Hey Muzz. I was thinking of blue or green for this one. Went with green becuse it looks better with the hardware.

The front is staying the color it is. Im gona redo the back in a cherry, but leave the blacked out edges to blend into it, Kinda like a burst but only on the very edges.

The analine hase gotten more vivid on the back, It looks like a big chunk of streaky belgian chocolate. Looks realy cool but just not for this guitar. I want something brighter to contrast with the front, SO a little cherry red should do that I rekon.

Its sanded back now with a light black wash over it, Cherry going on monday. Should look good with the black walnut neck.

  9. Haven't seen it mentioned so far so i thought i ask:

How many frets? I know joe usually used 22 but recently started to use 24,

and also released a signature with 24 frets.

I love the look of that quilt on that maple. :3

Not sure though how gold will fit green, i would have chosen black hardware,

but let's see how it turns out, and it can be changed anyway. :D

22, not a big user of 24 frets so no point realy. Besides those 2 extra frets move the pickup out of the position I want for the neck.

Cant decide what to do for the fret board profile, Conical or compound radius. was thinking 12 - 16 inch radius. So 12 at the nut, about 14 aroung the 12th & 16 at the body. any opinions ? cant make up my mind here :D

  10. I just snapped to the fact that you dyed the sapele black along with the maple. So now you've sanded back the black and gone green on the maple.....what did you do with the sapele?

    SR

The sapele is stained black aswel. But sanded back just like the front, The stain realy brings up the grain.

The black seems to make this cool gold flecking in the sapele more prominant also. Ill put up some piks later today.

  11. Just make sure you use titebond original. You are using light coloured woods & titebond 2 will dis-colour them. Wont take a stain either. the comment about looking at the AANJ profile is a good point aswell. Id look into that if I were you, even if you glue instead of bolting. the general shape is very condusive to good fret access.

Make sure the neck has a tight fit, is aligned perfectly straight to the bridge & use titebond original. You should be fine then :D

  12. Oh yea... I'm leaving the fretboard alone for a while. I don't want to work on it while I'm mad at it.

You know another time you should not work - while your tird & not feeling too well, you wont be paying attention. like I wasent.

Rubbed my eyes last nite after sanding a fretboard out, while my hands were caked in realy fine cocobolo dust. stupid thing to do. :D

  13. that would a good idea for an acoustic sound. But this thing is all Metal.

I'm getting RestorationAD's Diablo's made for it, this thing is going to be sweet when it's done. tapping and splitting the coils

gravey baby. That should be cool. Im splittin the coils on that satch thing im building.

But I have used peizos in other builds & tried them out with a nice overdrive & they are fairly swanky. Get some crazy sounds out of em. surprised the hell outa me :D

Anyway, back to fretboard hell - do I do compound radius - or conical radius ? :D

compound or conical ? compound or conical ? compound or conical ? drivin me nuts tryin to decide

  14. thats a total bitch on the fretboard man. id wait a few days to calm down before i went back to it, Stay on the heel & the rest of it for a while.

Love the spalted top, Have a spalted Les paul type thing myself. Has to be my fave top for these types of guitars. Cant wait to see this thing finished.
