  1. Sounds cool to me. I just measured and the widest board is 6.5" wide, would that be wide enough?
  2. For that, it'd be around $20 as you're basically buying a Walnut neck blank and slicing it in half. That 2 1/4" thick Black Walnut is expensive; it costs me more than Honduran Mahogany. I've Purpleheart if you need some of that to. I've probably got some cut-off scraps of those dimensions, just figure $5 for them. On my neck-thru, it's 1 3/4" maple and the tilt-back headstock is still one solid piece (no scarf joint) and doesn't dip below the 1 3/4" mark.
  3. Probably so:-) What kind of widths and lenghes would you need? Here's some small photos of the walnut: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/soundat11/al...dat11/my_photos
  4. I recently bought a batch of Black Walnut and wondered if anyone needs any? There are 2 boards, each is 2 1/4" thick, both are between 6-8" wide, and are approx 10 feet long. It's pretty nice stuff, nice and chocolate colored with the wavy streaks of red and such. No "flame" or burl figuring, just regular brown Walnut. I'd be happy to cut it into neck or body sized blanks if anyone is interested, and also neck laminate strips. I'll post some pics either Wednesday or Thursday. Just post your specs here and I'll figure up a price. If you need a certain thickness body blank, I can cut it down, which means I may have some thin Walnut guitar tops left over:-) thanks again, Will
  5. Lots more added tonight: 14x20, 16x22, 16x23, 17x22, 17x26, and hide glue to.
  6. http://stores.ebay.com/Sound-At-11?refid=store I've got a 17x26 piece ending later today. More stock to come this weekend.
  7. That's looking really good, attractive woods, a cool shape, and the contours are nice to. What's the headstock going to look like?
  8. In case anyone was wondering, $65 an hour is the rate I got for access to a huge planer, drum sander, and jointer at a local shop that has great tools and is a great bunch of guys, many guitar players. I suspect any cabinet shop around would be happy to run a couple pieces of lumber for free for a kid building a guitar, just chat it up with them and be friendly.
  9. Hey bugman, I still have those two pieces, they went off for planing and straightedging today, they should be awesome when they come back next week. The rest was all cut into neck blanks (and sent off with everything else). I tried to order some more Black Limba, but my supplier was out of stock, so I'll have to wait until they get some more in or else order White Limba, so it may be a few weeks on that.
  10. The Ash came in today, then off to the cabinet shop for planing +sanding + straightedging (run through a jointer). It averages around 3lbs per board foot in the rough, based on my invoice. It's good looking wood, the boards range from 6" all the way up to 10" wide. I told them I wanted "Swamp Ash", they said that's what's called Southern Ash that's grown in the delta states (LA, MISS) and that it is lightweight. Based on what little time I handled those pieces, they have beautiful rings and grain just like any transparent Ash Strat I've played or seen and had big open pore texture, similar to Limba. The boards were all quite resonant when tapped. The coolest is that one piece of the ash appears to have light flame to it! I went up and down looking at it front and back and it had subtle but noticable reflective figuring just like the piece of flame maple that I had stacked nearby. All my lumber went off the shop for processing today and should be back in week. The is is: Honduran+African Mahogany, Black Limba, Flame Maple, Ash. The Black Walnut is still at home, I haven't quite figured out what to do with it yet, anyone building a 2 1/4" thick walnut guitar:-) Purpleheart should arrive tommorrow and then off to the shop it goes to get the square and smooth treatment. Until then, just keep an eye on my Ebay auctions for my remaining Mahogany body blanks: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZsoundat11QQhtZ-1
  11. Uh-oh. Well, I've got the headstock shaped down and it was looking good. I grabbed can of flat black and sprayed it so I could get an idea of what the finished one would look like. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/soundat11/de...dnm=fe6fre2.jpg Then I noticed a crack in the neck directly below the truss rod under the nut. I didn't really notice the split before the paint, but then it became obvious. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/soundat11/de...dnm=93e3re2.jpg So now I have to decide if I want to fix this crude old neck , buy a neck, or just build my own? I've got a Carvin neck-thru blank going unused to, so I have to decide if I want to use it on this guitar and turn it into a full blown neck-thru (or cut it down to make a deep set neck) and put a top (either Purpleheart or Honduran crotch Mahogany) on it..... Here's the body further cut down, though it's obviously got a lot more shaping to do. The areas in black are my markings of what excess to sand off. I'm leaving the excess wood for the bolt-on joint until I finally decide on what neck (or neck joing) to go wit h. Note the excess hide glue and the chunk I knocked off the top accidentally. No biggie, though, as the body will get planed down to around 1 1/2" soon (it's 1 3/4" now). http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/soundat11/de...dnm=d4e1re2.jpg
  12. That's AWESOME! That's one of the most beautiful guitars I've seen on this site, very tasteful. One question, how is the purpleheart in the weight department?
  13. I love the look of Purpleheart (haven't heard it though) and am interested in putting a 1/4" thick bookmatched set of it on two chambered mahagany wings on a maple/ebony neck-thru guitar. Would the Purpleheart be too bright/brittle sounding on this guitar (already with the maple neck and ebony fretboard), or would the 1/4" thick top make little to no difference?
  14. 192 gram Milligan & Higgins, perfect for guitar. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=7380904482 Also some MASSIVE 1-piece mahogany body blanks (16 and 17" wide and up to 26" long!) http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZsoundat11QQhtZ-1
  15. Mahogany is nice, that's what I used. Just be aware that the neck-thru wood is going to make up a large percentage of your overal sound. Be careful with your choice of pickups to, a Ceramic bridge p'up in a maple neck-thru can be rather harse (what I used).
  16. Got the pieces run through a jointer today, so the edges are nice and straight, so I'll get the hide glue out of the fridge, heat it up, and join them this weekend. Pics to come then. The headstock is shaped down a lot more, almost complete, just needs some hand sanding, then I can drill for the tuners. I used some handfiles to get it down smooth. I found out that Epiphone uses a scarf-joint for their tilt-back necks. I still don't know what the wood is, they call it "Mahogany", although I'm guessing it's some Asian variation of it, it's similar, but definitely not mahogany.
  17. It'll be late next week when the Purpleheart and Ash arrive. I unfortunately couldn't get the Black Limba in a small enough bundle, but if there is any interest, I may get a small quantity of White Limba for necks and bodies (likely 2-piece ones).
  18. Partially received: 1 5/8" genuine Honduran Mahogany for 2 piece bodies, as well as necks, really good looking stuff. 1 3/4" Curly Soft Maple (flamed) for necks and bookmatched tops, a few really wavy pieces, some with subtle pieces, some with little to no flame. 2 1/4" Black Walnut (for bodies, tops, neck laminates, and gunstocks) approx 8" wide pieces, so should be suitable for 2-piece bodies and tops. Virtually all brown heartwood with nice red and purple streaking, very little white sapwood. There's some scrap ends that may be cut into pen blanks, knife scales, or other small things, in case anyone needs them. Purpleheart, Ash, and Black Limba tommorrow (I hope).
  19. OK, order placed. I wasn't able to get the ebony and rosewood, I'd have had to order several hundred board feet of each:-( I picked up: 1 3/4" Swamp Ash for 2-piece bodies (may have some 1-piece ones), 1 5/8" genuine Honduran Mahogany for 2 and 1-piece bodies, as well as necks, 1 3/4" Black Limba for 2 piece bodes (I've got tons of BL neck blanks right now to go with 'em), 1 3/4" Purpleheart for necks, bookmatched tops, and neck laminates 1 3/4" Curly Soft Maple (flamed and quilted) for necks and bookmatched tops, 2 1/4" Black Walnut (for bodies, tops, neck laminates, and gunstocks) Everything should arrive this week and then I'll start cutting it up and getting the pricing together. Prices should be good and as always, I'll beat any website's prices.
  20. I filled the screw holes from the previous tuners and did some more shaping and flush sanding on the headstock today. I also experimented with hide glue on some mahogany for the first time today. That's what I'll be using on the body. It's relatively easy if you follow the instructions online. The only thing is that I'm debating turning this body into a full blown guitar project and adding a deep set 5-piece neck and a maple top.
  21. Wow, looks pretty accurate to me as a casual SRV fan with a few of his DVD's. Close enough to fool most people.
  22. OK, I held off on my order due to the holiday weekend and all. Tuesday I'll be placing it. Tentatively, I'm going with: small quantity for neck use Honduran Rosewood Macassar Ebony Purpleheart larger quantity for bodies: white or black limba (haven't decided for sure) Swamp Ash (lightweight) Honduran Mahogany (I may until Feb on this one) Right now, I've got a lot of different body and neck blank sizes that I cut out this afternoon, if you need anything between 12x20 up to 17x26 1-piece Mahogany body blanks and 4x26 all the way up to 5x41 neck blanks in Mahogany and black limba. This will be going on Ebay this week and are for sale here as well, just PM me. Will
