  1. Wow, is it really that simple??!! I never tried, figuring I'd get a wildly inaccurate and useless reading. I thought I'd have to set up a signal generator and a 'scope and a frequency meter and take voltage and current readings then use arcane formulae and long forgotten mathematics and eldritch incantations (whew)!! Thanks guys Pete
  2. Sexybeast, an in depth tutorial would be great! (If you have the time) Toddler, your link is broken already Pete
  3. I'm surprised this thread hasn't been pinned yet. Should be the first thing newbies get to read... so much good advice! As a newbie myself, it's appreciated. Thanks guys. Pete
  4. Won't that just give me the d.c. resistance of the coil? Pete
  5. Can anybody tell me how to measure the impedance of unmarked speakers? Pete
  6. Ok, that's a good thing then!! Have you installed and played any of the pickups you've wound? Pete
  7. Wouldn't this have problems with uneven wire tension? (talking about the Lego version) Pete
  8. The Moderne is actually quite comfortable to play whilst seated. Forgot to mention my copy also has a tummy contour, like a Strat. As for the Corvus... I like it! Did that have a bolt on neck? I have an epi neck sitting idle, from a Les Paul junior i think. Hmmm, could be a project! Pete
  9. Thanks for the warm welcome!! Been reading some great threads.... Iceman and Aluminium guitars. Hmmm... Aluminium Iceman anybody?? Still reading!! Pete
  10. I have a Moderne copy. Must have been around '79 or '80 when I bought it. Made by "H.S. Anderson", a name I hadn't heard before or since. The only real difference to the Gibson design is the headstock shape. My guitar has a headstock shaped like a Les Paul, rather than the flared shape on the Gibson (I like the look of mine better). Originally came fitted with mini humbuckers, but they were so weak i swapped them out for a couple of DiMarzios.....Super 2s in both positions. This required some routing for the full size humbuckers. The guitar was quite dark sounding before this but after installing the Dimarzios it really roared! (with a guitar this shape your main goal is to vaporize the front three rows with carpet bombing riffage!) It's painted black, so I have no idea what woods were used in its construction, The body wood is a very deep red/brown (solid, not ply), No clue what the neck is. Fingerboard is very dark, almost black like ebony, but this may be a stained finish as it seems to be wearing through to a lighter colour. Set neck, Schaller tuners, Les Paul style brige and tailpiece. Build quality is pretty good, comparable to my Antoria (Ibanez) Flying V, although the frets could have been better dressed. Sadly, the guitar hasn't been used in a looong time. I scrounged one of the pickups for use in another guitar. I'm planning on refinishing it in white with gold hardware and bring it back to life! Pete
  11. Hi everybody! My name's Pete, and I'm just getting into building guitars after over 30 years of playing. I've spent some time reading through the posts here and know I have a lot to learn, and have done already. So far all I've done is replace some pickups and installed custom switching options, but I've recently picked up some cheap bodies/necks from ebay, the idea being that I can learn how everything fits together and how it works, experiment with some body reshaping and finishing, without it making too huge a dent in my wallet. I do, however, want to build from scratch, but I'll learn to walk before running. I currently live in England, where I am a, single and b, poor. But soon to move to the USA where I will be a, married and b, a lot richer!! I hope someday to be able to contribute something useful to the forum, but in the meantime I will read, learn, and build!! Pete
