  1. just sent you a pm about getting a couple hunks of that wood
  2. oops, too late! i bought it already. i will have to make do with it.
  3. dswain, i like the yellowing of the epoxy grain filler. what epoxy did you use and did you tint the epoxy yellow?
  4. i am looking at purchasing this compressor. http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US...t.jsp?pn=165614 will this work ok for a hvlp gun like the devilbiss finishline 3 or a sharpe finex x300 (1.3 tip)?
  5. wow, thanks for all the info guys. very helpful and i like getting your perspectives in relation to buidling. a couple of places that i am looking at have both eastern and western variety. i have a couple of quilted capped bodies that i have done, however, i would like to make a flamed top now. actually, i prefer a looser flame, not a real tight flame. perhaps, as fryovanni pointed out, i should look for the eastern variety. i will be using a mahogany back so i would like to tighten it up with something on the bright side. fryovanni, the weather has been great here... mid eighties!
  6. thanks, however, i know what flamed and quilted maple is (i have built about 3 guitars bodies up to this point with maple tops and have played guitars long enough). btw, i did google (i know that people on this forum live to chime in with their "search" replies). i would like to get some info from members of this forum so i can get another builder's perspective. my question is, what is the different between eastern and western flamed maple. i cannot buy my wood locally because we don't have a good selection for maple here in hawaii so i order my wood online. so before i order i just wanted to see if anyone on the forum would share any information they might have.
  7. what are the differences between eastern and western flamed maple? if anyone has pictures that would be helpful.
  8. guitarfrenzy, thanks for the link to the video link. actually, that method could also replace step 2 for those of us who don't have a big enough band saw. my band saw can only do up to 3" and i usually have 4" stock to cut (i don't care to glue headstock wings - just my pref).
  9. someone does... http://www.warmoth.com/supplies/supplies.c...useaction=necks
  10. i took a look at melvyn hiscock's book and he seems to route thru to the angle headstock too. so i guess it really is personal preference. frank, thanks for the tip about the placement of the brass collar.
  11. assuming i will be using a truss rod access cover, what are the pro or cons for drilling vs full route? are their structural issues? is it purely an aesthetic issue? does it only have to do with personal preference? i would like to try an make an informed decision.
  12. hey, thanks for your reply. i will be covering the truss access in either situation. hmm... so you prefer drilling. would anyone else like to share their thoughts on this?
  13. i tried searching around the board for this, but i couldn't find anything to quite give me the info that i needed. maybe i used the wrong key words. anyway... so i am building my first neck and i routed my hotrod neck channel. i stopped the route just prior to the headstock angle (approx before the nut) anticipating that i will need to drill the adjustment access into the headstock. however, while doing my searches i saw pictures where builders are routing clear past the nut into the headstock. on the surface, i looks like that would work fine. the only thing is there would not be any wood between the nut and the truss rod. it seems easier than drilling the access into the headstock. so... what are the pros and cons of routing a channel in this fashion?
  14. great news! dangerous has been upgraded to "fun, fun, fun"! i will practice on some scrap so i can have fun too!
  15. yes, that does sound dangerous! not sure i have the confidence to do it that way. btw, is that how you are doing it?
  16. thanks gregp. yes, i also thought about using a forstner bit too, but i thought i better tap some the experience of the members of the forum before i started drilling. however, seeing how we both had the same idea, it might be the way to do it.
  17. i tried searching, but since i don't know the right term, i am coming up empty. so how does one drill the PRS style sunken potentiometer holes?
  18. thanks all! ur suggestions were very helpful.
  19. i don't think anybody said it was hard to do. just looking for suggestions.
  20. oh... and i also don't want to use those single coil pickup rings.
  21. are you talking about humbuckers? if so, i know that one can adjust with springs via the mounting ring. however, i am talking about single coils mounted directly to the body since i will not be using a pickguard (rear route). i don't own a guitar where single coils are mounted without a pickguard so maybe there is something i am missing. are you saying there are adjustment springs for single coils mounted to the body?
  22. i like the idea of using the inserts. i could probably even cut small bushings to set the height of the pups. does anyone have a ballpark distance as a starting point for the pups?
  23. are the single coil pickups mounted directly to the body on a rear routed strat? if so, i assume that means they are not adjustable.
  24. can those be bent to match the fingerboard radius?
