  1. "I come from Alabama with a cigar box on my knee..."

    Yeah, it was just the first thing that popped out when I played it. It's so sloppy. It makes me laugh when I hear it back. The old time sound though is undenyable.

    Recording technique was done "the old way" with a SM57 pointed at the sound hole. It was on a boom stand and about 1 foot away. I think one track was pointed right at the sound hole at 90 degrees, and the other track was with the mic at the butt end of the guitar, still pointing to the sound hole.

    Nothing too scientific, but I just turned a different way on the stool for that 2nd track. :D

    Glad y'all like it.

  2. THIS SPACE RESERVED FOR...

    oh, just kidding...

    Well, here is my entry for the CBG build. The supplies I used:

    1 Cardboard cigar box

    1 poplar maple 1x2 from Home Depot

    frets and tuners courtesy of cheap eBay auctions

    left over 1/4 round for bracing.

    Scale = 25 1/8" (my favorite)

    Notice the cut out in the top ... Thanks to Hitone for that tip.

    Neck is carved from that one stick of poplar with a Strat inspired carve on the headstock. Notice the brass "nut" for tone. :D

    And, here's the sound clip. Doubled just because I wanted to. :D

  3. or a Bo Diddly Telecaster.

    Hasn't that, uh, been done already? :D

    You'd figure with all the wine that gets drunk around here, I should be able to come up with something...one of those standup bass thingamajigs for example....

    A telecaster from a wine crate? Really?

    In either case, I thought it would be cool to build and then display at the wine store in town. There's a lot of artsy-fartsy people that shop there and they would probably want one made like it with their favorite brand of wine. It's creative advertising and a complete exploitation of the people that have money to spend on wine and art. :D

  4. I agree that if this becomes a regular event that frets are not a requirement. I also see no problem with a 2x4 with bailing wire for strings if it can be played.

    Cigar Box Guitars, Diddly Bows, Cigar Box Violins have no rules. Kids and adults alike build them out of whatever they can find.

    So, for now, Godin set the rules. This contest week is his show and he says what goes.

    If you want a "frets optional" competition, start one. If you want a "build a guitar from a 2x4" contest, start one. Just don't start them all at the same time. I want to participate in everything I can. If 14 of these things are going at once I'd implode from the stress. :D

    Hmmm... 2x4 you say...

    <edit>

    BTW, I finished up my CBG last night. The weather outside is sucky so I'm just waiting on a little sunlight to take the pictures. It plays better than the other ones I've made, has an experimental headstock and a few other interesting quirks.

    I'll be recording a quick tune on it tonight to post with the pictures.

    <edit>

    If the contest happens again, I might dive in...I've got a pretty cool whiskey bottle box here...

    I have a wine crate for about 6 bottles that I'm looking at making something out of that. Either a wine box bass, or a Bo Diddly Telecaster.

  5. Call me crazy, but I actually like the sound of the Saga tele pickups. If one of y'all have built the saga kits and chucked the original bridge PU for something better, I'd love to have the original crappy one.

    PM me if you have one to spare. I can cover the cost of shipping and pay a couple bucks for your trouble.

  6. I use an X stand that holds the amp up about 18" off the floor. It's not so much for accoustic reasons, but it's slightly higher than the average cat sphenkter. So, in my case, it's more for a moisture barier. :D

  7. Bah Humbug !  I'm left handed and I play a right-handed guitar, the same way all the right handed players do it .  I'm not alone either : Joe Perry, Steve Morse, The Everly Brothers, Niles Lofgren do it like this too.

    But they STILL won't let me hang out with them !

    Make sure your friend isn't "special" like us (but you've probably seen him play and already know for sure).

    Did you know Hendrix was quite likely right handed ? (many people saw him writing with his right hand)

    I've heard that Jimi was a righty that played lefty.

    Add me to the lefty's that play righty club. Go us!

  8. and the Samick was my biggest suprise ever.

    No suprise there. I think Samick is the same factory that makes other "name brand" guitars. I've played one or two of theirs in the past and have been impressed with the feel and quality of them as well.

    One of the biggest surprises that I had in a guitar shop was this one by ESP... The Earvana nut was freaky. I've never played a guitar that was that in tune before.
