  1. Thanks guys. Its cool when a guitar comes out just like you picture it in your head!

Bob, Again, it ends up looking blue in the pictures without sunlight directly on it.

The paduak fretboard is pretty much the same exact color as bloodwood, except bloodwood can be a little more pale sometimes.

Apparently i need better pictures sir :P

  2. I purchased a storage box for my screws and tuners and stuff like that. Its astounding how many little boxes and crap I was able to get rid of just by condensing into one spot.

I'll upload pics of my home made bench and shelf, its cleaning up real well!

  3. Yeah, looking at it straight on it is invisible. It's a simple thing to hide in photos. (When I took those it was invisible from all angles.) But looking at it from a side angle now shows witness lines around every little fill spot. Maybe they could be sanded back level without getting back to bare wood or flattening the curve in the carve......I don't know. I've come to terms with the idea of respraying now. And I feel better having made that decision.......except for the additional wait till completion part. I'm still trying to remember where I put that can of patience.

The joys of flattering photography lol. I've been screwed over on ebay a few times because of that crap haha.

Im sure you will fix her right as rain again, just a little more time and effort, but she deserves the treatment :)

  4. That looks outstanding sir, almost looks blue on my computer now. Is it fading out a little? I love it, wouldn't mind jamming on that thing!

    Thanks guys.

    Bob,

It isnt fading at all. It looks blue because i took the pictures after the sun was off the grass, in full shadow. So the color is a bit deceiving.

Blue, black, gray, whatever, I love whatever it is :D haha I love ash stained black, always appealing finish for me.

  5. All this serious discussion makes me feel very fortunate with my catalyzed experiences... I haven't had any issues since following demonx's stirring techniques, double pouring, and filtering.

Curious, you are mixing in glass, not plastic right? (just dummy checking)

  6. Just for dust control... I know what its like working in a small.. "shop" like that lol.

Also a good idea, ALWAYS run your shop vac when you do anything that makes dust. Simple sounding, just something I find myself regretting not doing myself from time to time lol. (bad habbits from going from a huge shop to a little tiny one unfortunately). The tarps will just help keep the dust in one place.

Also, be sure you're AT LEAST wearing a dust mask. They are very cheap, and make yourself feel much much better at the end of a long session.

Im a simple hobbyist, but good baselines to have imo.

edit: Theres TONS of good information on this site, and many great ideas as well. Do yourself a favor and make sure you are reading everything you can find, not just waiting for information to fall in your lap.

As far as clamps go, I HIGHLY suggest investing in some quality pipe clamps... they are unstoppable forces of nature that every wood worker needs in his shop.

Also when youre gluing over sized pieces like that, I like to nail or screw one of the halves on so you have better clamping force. Works well.

  7. Dang you Rad! I have looked on that site every other day for a long time for madrona burl big enough for a guitar! They rarely have it.

It is not the prettiest piece but it was cheap and hte Laguna is accurate enough to bookmatch it.

I don't know why... but I REALLLY want that piece of wood. I just want to frame it and put it on my wall haha. And no, Im not being sarcastic. I love that wood!

  8. Grain filler and sealer are not the same thing.

indeed. Just giving some recent experience that seemed prudent lol. Mistake I learned that I had to redo a lot of work needlessly. edit: I had assumed incorrectly that primer would "seal" and save me some time... boy that bit me in the buttocks...

  9. How long did you let it dry for? And what did you spray it over?

I have used a lot of 2k clears, and they can be finicky in certain situations.

1, they dont dry correctly directly on wood or over some wood sealers.

2, they usually have to dry a lot longer than the can says. "dry" is not the same as CURED.

I have some stuff that I can wetsand and buff in about 30 minutes lol. 2k CURES by catalyst, it shouldn't require a lot of time to "cure" vs "dry". I let my stuff dry overnight just to be "safe" but it's not needed. I also haven't had any issue over pretty much anything I've done wood wise. Bare wood, colored wood, painted wood, sealed wood... all the same for me.

  10. food for thought, I had an interesting "reaction" with a guitar I modified a little while ago. I used a basswood ibanez body, and cut it down to size to add a flame maple top. I sanded the back and sides down to the sealer, but broke through the sealer in a couple spots. I didn't think much of it, but after I painted it, there was DEFINITE witness lines and absorption on the basswood where the sealer broker through. I wound up sanding back again, and resealing with some vinyl sealer which worked out nicely.
