  1. This is better than any Gibson SG i've seen in 15 years!
  2. I just got rid of an Ibanez V and this guitar makes me miss it already. Black is really hard to pull off as it shows every imperfection but from what I see, this bad boy looks great!
  3. That last lacewood one went so fast I dug into my exotic stash and pulled out another Lacewood Fret bender. IMO this one looks even better than the last lacewood. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=190147121229
  4. Never broke a toe! Shattered a shoulder once and I've had 3 pins and seven surgeries on my right ankle so I can understand your grumpiness
  5. I think it may be the picture. I took it with a flash so that would account for some shadows. My camera is not the worlds best to say the least. I used a .023 saw, a precision miter box, StewMac fret slotting template and cut them by hand. They will fit StewMac and LMII fret tangs that are press fit. I’ve been making them this way for a while now and have never experienced any issues. I tried to match my auction off of some of the more successfully fret board sellers online so I really didn’t realize that I would need more information. All of the fret slots are a uniform depth and width. As for arguing semantics, I just don’t do it. Rarely does it ever improve a situation. Most bocote that I see online is just a plain tan with a few black streaks in it. Obviously grain patterning is different than figuring so I guess if one wanted to argue about it I would be wrong in calling it figured but I really don’t think I was trying to mislead anyone. The picture clearly shows the grain pattern which is well above par for what you’ll usually find online. So regardless, both pieces are very nice and are well above what you’ll usually see online. I actually hope this auction doesn’t sell because I secretly want to keep it around until I find the right job for it! Edit: out of professional courtesy, I edited the title of my auction
  6. Well, compared to most that I see for sale mine is nicely figured. Yours is nice too but I’m not really seeing a ton of difference. I love bocote but the guitar I was going to use it on is made of sold birdseye maple so having a lighter board wasn’t going to look right.
  7. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=190146356987 I was going to use this on a personal build of mine but decided to go with Birdseye maple after I had already cut and slotted this one. So I've priced this one to sell quick!
  8. Just got a nice lacewood bender listed on Ebay! Better hurry, this one going to go fast http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=190145214484
  9. Realized I priced them higher than usaual so I dropped the price back down.
  10. My very first guitar was a battle axe shape with a bolt on and I was around 11 at the time. My first usable guitar was an acrylic telecaster bolt on.
  11. For your exotic wood fix check this out! http://cgi.ebay.com/Exotic-Luthier-Fret-Be...1QQcmdZViewItem If you'd rather have aluminum, I have 3 ready to ship http://cgi.ebay.com/Luthier-fret-raduis-be...1QQcmdZViewItem BTW, I have a fairly new Ibanez V for sale right now too. http://cgi.ebay.com/Ibanez-VBT700-Flying-V...1QQcmdZViewItem
  12. just glue two pieces of 1" plywood together and have your freind rough cut your real wood and the plywood. Use the router to cut out the body and cavities on plywood body and by the time you're done you'll have the skills needed to do a real piece of wood. Once you get over the inital fear of having something that spins faster that a VW bug in your hand you'll be glad you've got the router in your shop.
  13. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A:IT&ih=007 Does anyone have any experience with these full body decals? I had a positive experience using decals on the Titan mod job I did a while back but I’m leery of clear coating over an entire top covered with a vinyl sheet. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j287/ZDG...th/100_0391.jpg
  14. I really like this build and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. One thing, I’d hate to see that great lettering get cut out when you put in a sound hole. Are you thinking of going with F-Holes or possibly Ovation style holes to preserve the lettering on the box?
  15. Sold! They should really let us delete our own topics in this section.
  16. Yup, like I said, that’s why I went with the dual rods and the two way truss rod. I also used an ebony board too. So far no issues. You could also stiffen it up by doing a laminate. Possible walnut/maple/walnut
  17. I’ve been involved in a lot of debate over weather or not Walnut (in my case black walnut) is stiff enough to be used as a neck. All of the information I found puts walnut between maple and mahogany in hardness and density. I built a neck through with walnut and I threw in two graphite rods with a dual action truss rod just to make sure. Have you used walnut in the past without experiencing any negative reactions to the guitar? So far I’ve had no complaints with the one I made. The reason I asked is, I left the neck a bit on the bulky side and the owner would appreciate it if we could shave it down to a thinner size. I’ve recommended that we don’t until more information is available to ensure the neck doesn’t go nuts on us.
  18. Wow! I’m super impressed with this guitar. Do you have pictures of the mango top in its raw unfinished state? If not, is mango wood yellow or amber to begin with? I also like your choice of pickups. Nice work.
  19. Well, I just do the same thing Neal Moser does with his Walnut templar guitars (although I’m pretty sure he is using Dr. Ducks now.) I coat them with boiled linseed oil, no additives or hardeners. The linseed oil will get into the pours and harden. Some people add the wax because it leaves that shiny luster longer but if you use an oil finish, you WILL have to apply more oil on a regular basis. It’s not a maintenance free finish by any means. I would never recommend an oil finish to anyone who plans on stepping on stage with a guitar. It won’t hold up to the extra sweat or road hazards. For those people, I always recommend nothing less than nitro but suggest a poly finish. I recommend oil to those who want a very vintage feel and a guitar that will age well. I’m going to try Dr. Ducks on my next walnut build to see what all the hype is about. Apparently it’s really good stuff and really locks out the moisture.
  20. I really like the rounded shape of this Tele. The butt of a Tele usually sits to the right of the torso so you could likely get away with putting a jack like that on the back. It still looks unique but a little less feminine. It also looks like it might get cumbersome grabbing that knob where it is.
  21. I posted this in the September “Guitar of the month” contest but I’m really interested to see what you guy’s think about the refinements Again, I improved the headstock shape, Used boiled linseed for a base and loaded it with passive pickups. I also went from 4 controls to 3 to give more room! I also added wooden cover plates (which was a first for me.) Once the case comes in I'll be listing it for sale. 22. This the second EVX Dominator Custom that I've built. It's a loose spin off of the Ibanez XV500. Some of you might have checked out my prototype EVX in the "in Progress" section of this forum. This EVX sports several refinements such as an improved headstock, Natural wood cover plates and Linseed oil finish. This one also has passive pickups where the prototype was loaded with Seymour Duncan Live wires. 23. This is an interesting thread! I mainly focus on exotic hardwoods for building guitars and I can honestly say that I’ve never once put on a mask and my only dust collection system is a 30 Gallon shop vac. This is what I’ve determined personally. Zebra Wood just smells! Lace wood gave a slight sore throat the first time I used it and hasn’t been an issue since Padauk burns the heck out of my throat, makes my eyes feel like sand paper and makes my nose run like its negative 20 outside. Not only that, it stains blue jeans permanently. The ill affects have not gotten worse over time but they do not get better over time. Walnut makes my nose run too but that’s because it’s such a fine dust (almost like sand) Acrylic (I’ve made a ton of acrylic bodies over the years. It will make you high and can cause some upset stomachs do to its low melting range.) Wenge, ossage orange, cocobolo, teak, maple, beech, snake wood, ebony, rosewood, yellow-heart, ash, alder and blood wood have never bothered me. I’m sure there is more but who can remember! I’ve also sprayed my fair share of nitro without a mask too! By the way I just had my lungs tested due to an unrelated issue and they are perfect for my age group. Anything can cause you cancer. Breathing some wood dust now and then won’t cause any more cancer than sitting in traffic sucking the exhaust fumes of the guy in front of you.
  24. That’s the same way I did mine. At first I used gorilla glue but it got puffy and messy. I was thinking it would hold the metal better than super glue. After correcting that I moved to super glue and it worked fine. This was my first attempt at making wooden covers and I’m pretty sure I’ll continue doing it on all of my un-painted guitars.
