  1. Hi All I am thinking of making a thickness calipers, I have seen a dial guage for sale and also a picture of a homemade calipers using a guage and timber structure. Has anyone got any experience of making a thickness calipers. Photos would be appreciated or web links. Thanks Garry
  2. Hi Mattia Thanks for the links, most i have not seen before. I am going to try to make a copy of one over the holidays if i have the material. Thanks Garry
  3. Hi All I am looking for instructions on making a good side bender, something that is quick and safe to bend my guitar sides. Websites are welcome. Thanks Garry
  4. Mattia I like your attitude. I have told some friends that i am doing the course and they just say "Why make a guitar when you can buy one cheaper", life wouldn't be much fun if we just bought everything from multinational companies. Unfortunatly i have just ordered wood for an acoustic but am still thinking of the archtop or a fretless bass, as you can tell i like to stray from the normal. From your experience of guitars, is there a lot of waiting around for glue to set, finishes etc. I ask as maybe when i start the course i may start the archtop as a side project at home at christmas so that i can get help on the course with tools etc. Or is 2 guitars running together too much to take on. Garry
  5. Hi Donald I just saw your story today, love the guitar. Just wondering how many hours went into the project. Also what kind of cnc machines do you use. I know some people who work with cnc machines (weinman, hundegger..) for cutting timber houses. I am assuming that your machines for guitar making would be much smaller and more precise, any idea. Also I work with hsbCAD which is used for designng timber houses, furniture etc and it outputs cnc files. With TurboCAD, what type of file do you need to output, is it dwg, dxf or a cnc file. Thanks Garry
  6. Ok, thanks everyone. I think the best think for me is to forget about the archtop until i get to guitar 3 0r 4. It looks like i would make a mess unless i have access to a cnc machine. But looking at Donal's project, i so want to make/buy an archtop they are so cool. Tanks Garry
  7. Hell All Can anyone tell me where i can get FREE drawings of acoustic guitars. I don't want to pay as I will probably make some changes to the drawing as i wan't to make something slightly different to the normal guitar. So why pay for something that I am only going t use 60-70% of. CAD drawings would be best Thanks Garry
  8. Hello All I am about to start a course on my first guitar and want to make something different from the standard acoustic guitar. I was playing with the idea of an acoustic bass but on some web sites people said that an acoustic bass is not very powerfull unless yu are playing in your bedroom and my instructor thught that it may be too much of a challange for a first guitar. So i have now set my mind on an acoustic archtop, is this a difficult first guitar or is it much the same as a regular acoustic. What differences should i take into account when choosing wood and what are the main differences in the design. I am in the UK, does anyone recommend a good supplier of wood in the UK. Thanks Garry
