And here she is of yesterday, with the first coat of tung oil sealer on
I just put the 3rd coat on now.

not much visisble progress, just sanding the sides to smooth em out, and finalizing the top. Also scooped the knobs, and they got the truss rod cover engraved to the grandmothers name.

14.5 really isn't that big! I made my first tele at about 14 1/4 or even more, hahah
-
mahogany and wenge?
-
I'm only 17 though ahahh, and on my 5th build.
-
I'm on the east coast of canada, mind you. I also want to be able to resaw, but Im undecedided if I should just get a 200$ 9" one to cut bodies and necks, or just splurge on a 15" and be able to resaw everything.
-
its next on the list! As soon as I finish this PRS probably all of it will go towards a bandsaw....not sure if the 14" ridgid for 399 will do, or if I should go with the 15" craftex for 599.
-
I also lack a bandsaw, think I could cut those strips with a table saw? (have access to one). If I go with the tablesaw method, I should probably thin t down to 1/4 then cut the 3" strips, right? That way I could prob get 2 necks from it.
-
I'm talking about multi peice neck through blanks (on purpose, to show off more skill). The wood I buy is always wormhole/knot free anyways, and kiln dried. My only local source is mostly flat sawn, and all the quarter sawn species aren't applicable to guitar building. My question is though, what sizes should I buy it? I need 5 accent strips (1 on each left/right end, 1 in the center, and 2 peices 1/4" away from the center, the rest being maple). Do I buy 2 inch thick stock and slice off 1/4" slices, or can I re-saw it to 1/4, then cut 2" wide strips and stack them on end to glue it together. It'd be much easier to do the re-saw method.
-
I'm jelly of all you'r lumber. I've been making cabinets and landscaping all week, I'll have about 200$ to spend on wood friday! What way do you glue up your multi peices? Face grain to face grain?
-
give us dimensions! I'm sure 1/2 thick will do, or if they string on the trapeze tailpeice it'll be fine.
-
add some moisture to it, then put laquer on when it fills itself.
-
wenge fretboard? Do want!
-
grovers are the best tuners, classic design and flawless mechanics, no idea why people get hung up on double the price schaller's, or locking for that matter.
Gotta love those chips that fit together perfectly!
-
oh wow, he screwed the cracks :haha: Hoping you're just glueing and clamping it back together or something.
-
I think I'll make red peice #1 perfect, then do everypeice that touches it, then continue with very adjacent peice untill its done, flip it over, glue it together, then inlay it. The pearl and jasper are different thickness'.
-
whats the finish on it?
-
why not use the bamboo simply as a top? Still get the look, but you get the strructural integrity of a "real" wood underneath.
-
I was thinking I of the red, then the little peices around it of MOP, then II of red, and IV of red, then II of mop, etc.
-
I'm doing this inlay for a commision, but not entirely sure how to attack it. Where do I start as in cleaning the peices and fitting it together?
I of course rought cut them out first, but what order do I make them fit each other?
Here is a pic of it, it'll be about 3"x3"
-
that takes all the fun out of it!
-
I would never use less then 7 ("real" clamps, that can put some pressure down )for neck lams, and a caul!
-
Non scarf necks are fine when it is strat style, and no real angle. I've yet to do a scarf joint, but I will soon!
