  1. NotYou,

To give you a little background on me, I have been in marketing, pricing and business strategy for about 20 years now. I come on this site because I am in awe of what you all can do. So if my business experience can benefit any of you I'd be happy to give back after all I learn from you.

"I've been with Destroy All Guitars for a few years now and they've been great to me. I haven't even looked around at other dealers or anything like that because I haven't seen a reason too." I would suggest the reason to look for other dealers is to increase demand for your product/brand. As demand increases and supply stays constant price goes up. If I owned Destroy All Guitars I would love to have a product that drove people in the door - as long as you are not supplying it to my immediate competition.

I think it is great that you recognize the need to have someone assist in areas you have little interest or experience in. However, there still needs to be someone steering the ship and deciding on strategy. Most people get very confused on the difference between tactics and strategy.

Few products have ever made it big without effective marketing. Many products have been hugely successful because of marketing i.e. The Pet Rock.

If you would like to talk specifics I'd be glad to help.

  2. This is an issue I have supported for a long time. I still vote for placing a time limit from their initial registry to their first post. Spammers are not going to care enough to set up an account and wait 24 hrs before posting. I am willing to help out in any way I can. It is downright embarrassing to open up this forum in front of my wife and have it be more about porn than guitars. If I was not already converted to PG and was looking for my first time I would never return.

  3. I make all my cases curved and custom make every one to suit the guitar. The case is stronger than a rectangular case and takes up way less room for storage and transport. I lay the guitar on the sheet of ply and mark around it then add about 20mm / 3/4" bigger all round. I then use thick fake fur and glue that to the inside of the finished case and the guitar fits as snug as and doesn't move around. I always make a fitted neck rest as well to support the neck.

A good tip is to make sure your case hinges are in line so they dont bind up when you try to open them.

I have done upholstery for 6+ years and sadly enough know a little about foam. If I were to make a case I would follow this method with one or two changes. I would line the case with 1/4" of closed-cell foam(this is the foam that is under a vinyl top) it is very dense. I may even put a minimal amount of softer foam in places like the top. I would steer clear of carpet because it is more abrasive than your fur would be. That is just my two cents.

  4. I agree with Crazy Man Andy. Not to be rude. I am a marketer so I know takes a lot of money and time to market products. The world if full of examples of inferior products killing superior products. Classic example is VHS and Beta video cassettes. Sony did a good job of making there VHS systems to the general public faster and convincing us they were better, but theaters use Beta because it is better quality.

To respond to the above comment about "recycled junk" maybe you have heard about the guy who marketed The Pet Rock. Common garden rocks that he named and put in clever packaging. The public thought they were great.

I would encourage you to continue to be unique. Appeal to a niche and forget the rest.

    Best of luck,

    Brodie

  5. I am getting ready to order some finishing supplies and have been intrigued by Rustins. However I want my guitar to be an Alpine White. I have read that Rustins is not to be used in conjunction with paint, so my only hope is that the white they supply is the pigment I want (right?). Let me know if they are the same or if I should consider different finishing options.

    Thanks,

    Brodie

  6. I have worked at a shop where we used these to spray contact cement. I'm sure contact cement is harder to spray than regular paint so take this info for what it is worth. We bought about a dozen of them. Three were perfect, shot well and laid down a good pattern. Some were ok, and others were garbage. That being said Harbor Frieght does allow you to exchange the tool if you are not happy. So my advice is buy one and if it doesn't work trade it for anohter.

  7. Fool that I am, I'm willing to pay more if, in fact, it will the performance of the guitar (even a little). I am not trying to supporting either side, just let each side be heard. I thought this was an interesting comment.

I like the TonePros, although they are pricey for what you get. It is an OEM tune-o-matic with tapped set screws. That's it for the extra $50. You are paying for the patented idea. If you are making your own guitar (not to sell) then you can add set screws to a regular TOM bridge. Since I am selling most of the guitars I build I get the TonePros. It not only adds sustain but the transfer of vibrational energy is enhanced because of the elimination of excess slop in the bridge/post joint.

I tested this and setup my first TonePros wihout setting the screws and played it for a bit. Then I locked the screws. There was a noticeable increase in sustain and the overall harmonic content of the guitar. I use the TonePros all the time now.

  8. Obviously I'm no expert or I wouldn't have posted. But, it seems to me that it should be some kind of mathmatical formula taking all factors into account. I realize that one LP can sound different from another. Isn't this due to things like wood density?

I subscribe to the theory of diminishing marginal returns mentioned above. I also believe a large part of why Gibson doesn't change the dimensions is more asthetics than anything (their customers would kill them). They tried it before with the SG.

I have always looked for facts and formulas because I understand it more than I do art. Art is too hard to grasp. It is not repeatable.

Thanks for all your postings. Keep it up.

  9. I have read the previous post on the size and shape on the tone of the guitar. I would like a little clarification.

I love the LP sound, but I love the look and feel of the PRS Singlecut. So, I would like to make something similar to the PRS that sounds like a LP. What I have read said the biggest factor, using the same woods and scale length, is the weight. I'm confused. Although the LP is larger, bulkier it is weight reliefed. If a PRS weighed the same a LP(using LP scale length and PUPs) would it sound like a LP?

I apologize if this seems like the rambling of a mad man. All input would be helpful.

    Thanks.

  10. I, like many of you, have had times of on-again off-again playing. I have tried to teach myself, use computer programs, and instructors. I have finally found an instructor that teaches the way I learn and what I want to learn. The problem I have found with most instructors is they think because they can play something, they can teach it. Not true.

Bottom line is do what works best for you. Have fun. Allow yourself to excell in what your good at and not what an instructor or book thinks you should be good at.
