12 coats applied. Still have another 6 to go before it gets buffed. I am not a patient man so the wait is KILLING me. It sure is getting shiny though.

My camera will not let me shut off the flash so I couldn't capture the reflection as well as I had hoped. Although the color of this shot sucks it is really more representative of the actual gloss. I covered the flash with my finger to take the shot.

That totally blows. I will sit back and wait to see what your solution is to this. From what i have seen you have more than enough skill to turn this around.

Love the inlay work.

On a side note, I was in a guitar shop near my house yesterday (Burnsville, MN) and was talking to one of the guys who worked there and I mentioned I was building a bass. He immediately says "There is a dude here in town who builds guitars who goes by the handle Whalehazard." to which I had to chuckle since I have been reading this thread but did not know you were from MN. I said I was familiar with your work and he got all excited and pulled up some of your stuff on the store computer to show me. I would love to see your band play sometime but I do not remember what it was called. If you could let me know I would love to come out and see you.

It is a totally unorganized abomination at the moment but here it is.

It might just be the angle of this shot but the treble horn looks much fatter and more rounded than the bass horn to me.

I tested the wipe on poly as a possible finish for my current build. It does go on very nicely and cures hard. I ended up going with the minwax spray on water based poly acrylic mainly because any of the oil based products will amber the wood and I did not want that. I will definitely be using the wipe on for future builds.

I printed the decals myself on my laser printer using waterslide decal paper.

I will add another side effect. When I was working with it last the sawdust that landed on exposed skin caused immediate itching. It did not let up until after I had showered (which did not take too long trust me).

Decal added to the back of the headstock and started in on the next 3 coats of clear. Probably will not be much to show for the next couple of weeks as I scuff back and build up the clear coat.

Personally I used a jig saw and coping saw for my mdf headstock jig to bring it within about 1/16th of the outline and then used a drum sander in my drill press to finish it off.

I use a similar method except I use scotch tape and wrap it on the razor blade. I have never had any issue cutting through the tape but your method offers a good solution for harder to access spaces.

The only thing I hate is that facial hair is already growing in the second (amber) one.

Thanks, but honestly I think I spent more time thinking about how it would work than I did building it. It only took me a few hours and about 30 bucks to put together.

I hit a little bit of a slowdown. Humidity has been crazy for the last few weeks here and the guitar started to swell up. I brought it inside for two weeks to allow it to lose moisture and also went on vacation. After returning from vacation I decided I needed a dust free location (or as close as possible) to spray my finish. Aside from containing over spray I also didn't want something to take up a ton of room in my garage so I built this quick and dirty collapsible paint booth.

Folded up it is just over 5 inches thick. I still have to attach the base and a handle to make it a little more portable but so far it is working out well.

Finally, I got my first 3 coats of clear on. I went with a rattle can water based poly (minwax). I tested out several different products because I didn't want to amber the wood at all and this is what got me closest to the result I was looking for.

I draped another sheet of plastic in the front to keep the inside as free of dust as possible but did not take a photo of that. Now I have to leave it alone for 72 hours before I can scuff back and add a few more coats.

Looks like a great spot and an awesome project to me. You could even cut a hole in the conex and add an air conditioner to control the humidity for the whole unit if you wanted.

I am very impressed with the work you do with the minimum of giant power tools. Does that drill press live outside??? Holy rust. LOL!

That is a pretty cool jig. I might have to try to build one of those.

Dang. That really is a beast. The bass I am building weighed in last at 6.9 lbs and all I have left is to add finish and hardware.

I am pretty sure you owe me a new keyboard. I just drooled all over mine and ruined it.

First ever inlay. I wanted it to look a little like script but it turned out a little messier than planned. Not exactly perfect but for my first I can be happy with it.

This is too funny. I have been working on a pair of necks for the last few days that are wenge and maple in a 3 piece lam.
