  1. Hey everyone,

I'm parting out my 7 string Ibanez 7620. It has a black body with the post inserts still in the guitar. No pickups or hardware otherwise.

I have the neck avialable with the floyd nut still installed. No tuners.

Both are in good shape with the usual wear on the frets from a few years of playing. Body has several nicks in it from gigging, traveling etc.....

I'm looking for trades on parts or wood.

7 String parts - bridges, pickups, locking nut (screw into the neck from teh top, not behind like Ibanez's)

6 string parts - bridges, pickups

    Abalone similar inlay material.

    Cash offers also nice. :D

Buyer pays da shipping and pics will be available this weekend.

  2. Hey all!

I've noticed that there are a lot of Canucks from Toronto on the boards and I was wondering if we could arrange a get together, compare notes, designs, ideas...yadda yadda. Maybe even loan out a few tools or something to each other. I make trips out to Cambridge with at least a week or two notice and i'm pretty sure some people would be interested in checking out A&M Wood Supply (www.forloversofwood.com).

Hope to hear from you guys!

    Brian

  3. Do you go to Burlington, the Exotic Wood place to get your wood?

or A&M Woods (Cambridge) <---- I've never been here

I've always been a kelly fan.. and I own one too

Here's what I had in mind for my next kelly build

    Pics from Jackson Custom shop

    Another One

    Head idea?

Actually i'm heading to A&M tomorrow if you wanna come. :D I love that place. It's like a big candy store for guitar junkies.

I love that design that Jackson has with the little cuts but i'd be petrified trying to get those to look good.

  4. Hey everyone!

Started a new project, but i don't have photo's of the actual wood as it's about 45 minutes away from me. I did however have a photo of the base template (yes i know the neck isn't tapered....).

It's a 7 string kelly'ish explorer, 25.5 scale, 24 frets, 2 seymour duncans, tuneomatic bridge with string thru ferrules, grover locking tuners and it's my first neck thru. I'll grab photos of the cut out parts this weekend.

And my feet for good measure.

  5. Kahler jumped back into the biz last year and started supplying units. They're at www.kahlerusa.com. The most commonly used series they had was the 2300 series I believe. They have variations with aluminum/brass/steel.

I think i'm just going to use a floyd. I know them a lot better. I don't clip the ball ends on my strings though, i actually leave the ball end at the headstock. I pull the string tight and clip it just at the end of the bridge. I find i get the perfect amount of winds on the posts.

    Thanks guys!

  6. Hey everyone,

I'm going to be buliding a 6 string guitar within the next couple of months. Basicaly a shred guitar. I'm currently up in the air whether to use a Floyd Rose or a Kahler system. I've owned several Ibanez's before and I really love Floyds. I know how to fix them, set them up....

Then I see this Kahler bridge that a lot of people really like (the 2300). I've noticed the guys in Slayer have them on pretty much every guitar they own. I've played a guitar with one before and i thought it was pretty slick.

So i put forth, what do you guys prefer. In the end it'll be my preference, but I'd like to get some input into the pros and cons between the two bridges.

  7. So I had to drive 400 KM on my birthday (on last Friday) and I was kinda bummed out. We stopped half way between here and there, and my wife pulls out a little cheesecake from Tim Hortons and starts singing to me. While i'm cutting it, she opens the trunk which she packed earlier with her stuff first and produces a guitar case with an Ibanez RG770, complete with Duncans. (JB, Cool Rail, PA Distortion Trembucker) I mentioned on several occasions that I wanted to get another one since I sold my last one 4 years ago. Not only did she pick up a 770, she tracked down the guy I sold it to and bought it back. I'll post a pic tonight, but I just wanted to share how cool my wife is. :D I actually shed a tear I was so happy.

Pics tonight will also include a video of me attempting to play my 8 string too which is FINALLY done. Hopefully the sharp criticisms of my playing won't be too harsh.... :D

  8. Well I'll definitely apologize.

So on topic - I can't really see the benefit for having that much more mass at the headstock. I remember about 10 years ago, some company was selling brass Fender headstock plates that you clamped to the back of your headstock. I played a guitar with it on and I really couldn't tell a difference....

There's something else that's kinda strange about his approach and information. If he's looking for minimal string pressure, binding, and general minimum string interference, why is he using high impedance pickups instead of something like lace sensors or EMG's?

  9. oh, well, lets all group together and poke fun at him then....

If you dont like the guy or his guitars, go and build a guitar, better than him, faster, more often, and then sell them for a higher price. Show us that yours are better.

Or, you could just sit back and type all day...

There are people who "can do", and people who knock them. Which one are you?

It's rare that I'll take a stance on anything here, but that's pretty flawed logic, Perry. I don't like Porches, but i'm not going to go out and make one. There's a ton of bands I despise out there (like Coldplay), but i'm not going to try to start a band to one up them. I also dont' have the time to be building 16 guitars a year nor do I want to dedicate my life right now to doing so. I've got a full time job (that I love) and I do martial arts. Little hard for me to dedicate every waking hour to building guitars.

I'm also willing to bet that a lot of people are posting on work hours.. :D .....

I'm one of those people who tries...not sure if i "can do" but I'll have no issue knocking something I don't like.... no sense beating around the bush. I really don't have an issue with doing it if it's done by a narcissitc, arrogant egomaniac like the guy who does Zachary guitars.

    :D

I do realize that you're addressing a group of people and not me. B)

  10. I actually posted on that site about a year and a half ago when i started getting into building. I found the guy to be horrifically unprofessional, not to mention being a complete jack***.

It's like reading a webpage written by Ed Roman's illegitimate child.

Other than making standard guitars with wilkinsons, i didn't really see anything unique about his guitars except a silly headstock design and an interesting body. Nothing warranting $2500 US. I'd rather have one of Perry's godlike creations over this idiot any day.

  11. lol what politics are involved in paintball? :D

    That's what everyone says. :D

When you start playing tournaments and you're playing for $10K for first place, it gets pretty intense. I played the Skydome in Toronto (now the Rogers Center) 3 years in a row for a grand prize of $25,000. Didn't win first, but i did walk home with 500 bucks in my pocket. It's not in the woods or anything like that. Check www.tdotballers.com and go to the smacktalk area. You'll see a lot of the BS people sling. Check the pictures area to see what it's like out there.

Standard Politics - Jumping teams, playing with non sponsorship gear, paint, clothing, masks etc, tournament BS, cheating.... I've actually lost at least a dozen friends over paintball and it's politics.

  12. I played Amateur level paintball for about 10 years. Stopped because of the politics and general BS involved in it. It actually caused me to stop playing guitar for a good 3 or 4 years. I've since learned the wrongs of my ways and quit paintball, took up guitar and started building.

  13. on my 8, i didn't measure the distance that the barrel jack was going ot be going into the cavity. The jack ended up touching the tone pot. :D It's since been corrected with a lot of washers.

I'd say my biggest mistake is just not making ABSOLUTELY sure of what I'm doing. I had to re-fret my guitar twice and since i'm rather inexperienced, it shows on the fretboard.

Take yer time, measure twice (or more) and cut once. I should seriously adhere to that more often.

  14. I'm heading back to the shop on Wedneday so I can grab the spacing for ya then Goth! :D I'll get the exact measurements for the nut width and base width too as i've received a couple of PM's about it.

I had a hand injury a long time ago that makes my hand cramp really fast if i use really heavy strings (like 10's and up) so I actually use ultralights (8's). The high E on the 8 string is an 8 and so is the high 8, just with more tension.

I received my nut and fretting files last night so i can try to get the high spots out of the frets. I'm hoping to have everything done inside of 2 weeks. I'm also considering re-fretting the whole neck as well with the jumbo fretwire i received from Stew Mac. The fretwire I received from my local store which was supposed to be "jumbo" sure isn't and now I'm sure i'd rather have that size one. Besides, 5 of my frets lifted pretty hard.

  15. Well, I sadly don't have an amp right now, so I can't tell you how it sounds yet.... :D Thanks again everyone for the compliments....It was a year and a half in the making and just slapping the strings on her gave me a smile ear to ear.

Goth - I used the .175 bridge. The slab of birdeye as the fretboard is pretty thick so i wanted to make sure i was going to have string clearance.

I've also taken the nut out and replaced it with another one. The low F# just would not intonate. I should have figured that with the 25.5 scale length, but that's the way it goes. I'm slotting the new nut to accept the high A instead of the low F#. The cut on the original one just didn't look good with the low B in the F# slot.

I'm going to post more pics, a sound clip and a video clip as soon as I an amp. I just bought my new head today, so I'm shopping for a cabinet now.

  16. One question: Is the fretboard tapered at all? It looks like the nut has the same spacing as the bridge.

The base of the neck is 3.0 inches dead on and the neck tapers down to 2.174 i believe. The angle of the picture once again deceives all...... I could be totally wrong, but that figure pops out in my head. The guitar is at my parents place right now (i'm moving, no sense bringing it downtown to move again...) The string spacing is a little tighter than most guitars, but i've got smaller fingers than most people so the smaller spacing rocks.
