  1. I have a couple of questions about McFadden's if anyone here uses it. What is the cure time for McFadden's. Do I use lacquer thinner or a reducer or can I put it into my gun right out of the can. This will be the first time I am using a spray gun so I don't know much about the system. Also I am going to get the mcfaddens vinyl sealer as well. Does the sealer spray onto the guitar like clear or is it applied differently.I tried looking up McFaddens but didn't find too much any help would be appreciated. Thanks Steve
  2. I am gonna be spraying guitar for fun on the side... but mainly airbrushing. So I have this compressor http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/disp...temnumber=38898 and was curious if anyone could tell me whether or not this mini gun would be enough for spraying clear on a the guitars . http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/disp...temnumber=92126 I appreciate it Steven
  3. I don't wanna buy a really expensive gun and I don't think with the compressor I am using that an HVLP gun would work best. I will probably go to harbor freight and pick up a gun to start with. I am gonna paint a crap load of 2x4's that way I can get that practice before spraying. Drak said something about thinning nitro. I assume your thinning the nitro with the quality thinner and not the trash. My only question is that is there a set like 50 - 50 or 75-25. I guess i'll just have to practice with it. Thank you for your help I really do appreciate it. And don't worry I plan on building a spray booth and getting a respirator because I like my lungs. Thanks Venom
  4. Sweet thanks that helps a lot. I'll go to harbor freight and check it out. What do you use to clean and spray gun after spraying lacquer ( or what ever clear you choose) lacquer thinner? Water? What? I'll search it. Thanks again Steve
  5. I was looking online and found something talking about guitars finished with pre-catalyzed cellulose its supposed to have the pro's of nitro and non of the cons. Has anyone ever used or heard of anyone who has used this? Sorry to have two post on here but they are about different things Venom
  6. I dislike the search it brings up way, too many threads to read through. I was at work when the idea struck me and didn't have the time to go through them.. normally I would. Thanks again. Venom
  7. I got two questions for the forum today. My birthday is coming up soon and I will be getting a compressor. I am also going to be getting a spray gun. I was just curious as to what type of spray gun that I should get for finished guitars. All of the painting will be with an airbrush. So the larger spray gun will just be used for lacquer.. maybe base coats. I will be building a spray booth and also will be getting a mask. So my next question is with a spray booth and my gun which is the best lacquer to use with it? I have been thinking about nitro because I like the fact that it meld together. But it takes so long to cure. Is there another lacquer that has a better curing time and melds together to prevent witness line? Sorry I know there are a lot of questions. Thank you for you time Steven
  8. I appreciate the replies, I have been wanting to clear a couple of guitars for a while. But I have been doing my homework before I just go off galavanting with expensive and sometime dangerous chemicals. I liked the idea of the true oil or especially the Le Tonkinois because its shiny, nitro yellows and cracks and seems to be very fragile and I don't at this moment have the money to take it to a shop. But it looks like the later is probably best my option. I'll probably experiment with some of it. Thanks Venom
  9. Im not a luthier although it sould like a blast. Im an artist and would like to put some are on some guitars. I have been thinking of ways to clear the artwork on the guitars and was curious about true oil. Has anyone ever use true oil over airbrush work? I like the idea of it being non toxic and Being able to apply it with out a brush.. I like the idea of the glossyness of nitro but that may get in the way of some of the artwork.. is true oil maybe my best bet? Thanks Venom
  10. Does anyone know if you can purchase this stuff in the states. I have been looking for a lacquer or varnish that I can use. I like the Idea of the non-toxic.. is true oil the american version of this or is this an entire different ententity all together. And I found that book at the library. Thanks Venom
  11. wow 29 hits and no one knows anyone that can spray poly on my guitar in the atlanta area.. Im not in the guitar making business i just wanna put art on them. steve
  12. I have been wanting to put artwork on guitars but have been having a little trouble with the clear coat. I was curious if anyone in the atlanta area knew someone that painted cars that could help me out. I don't wanna spray really anything because I have kinda bad lungs as it is already. And right now no money for a mask.(I know its a 27 dollar investment, I just don't have 27 dollars right now) So I was kind curious if there was an automotive place that anyone knew could help me out. I've been calling but no one seems to wanna handle it for less than like 100 dollars and I can't pay that. Anyway if you can help thanks Steve
  13. I am using a nitro on a guitar that i am using do you think it is neccessary to use a respirator outside when sprayin deft or will a dust mask be enough? Steve
  14. I have been thinking about using the tru-oil or varnish oil.. Does it work well with water based paints and does it work well on a guitar? Steve
  15. I don't know if this is a silly question or not but what is the easiest way to tell if the existing finish is compatible with the nitro? Other than the 2 part poly is there maybe another clearcoat that I can use instead of the nitro if it isn't compatible? Like maybe the waterbased finishes on stewmac? Venom
