  1. I have a couple of questions about McFadden's if anyone here uses it. What is the cure time for McFadden's. Do I use lacquer thinner or a reducer or can I put it into my gun right out of the can. This will be the first time I am using a spray gun so I don't know much about the system. Also I am going to get the mcfaddens vinyl sealer as well. Does the sealer spray onto the guitar like clear or is it applied differently.I tried looking up McFaddens but didn't find too much any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  2. I don't wanna buy a really expensive gun and I don't think with the compressor I am using that an HVLP gun would work best. I will probably go to harbor freight and pick up a gun to start with. I am gonna paint a crap load of 2x4's that way I can get that practice before spraying. Drak said something about thinning nitro. I assume your thinning the nitro with the quality thinner and not the trash. My only question is that is there a set like 50 - 50 or 75-25. I guess i'll just have to practice with it. Thank you for your help I really do appreciate it. And don't worry I plan on building a spray booth and getting a respirator because I like my lungs.

    Thanks

  3. I got two questions for the forum today. My birthday is coming up soon and I will be getting a compressor. I am also going to be getting a spray gun. I was just curious as to what type of spray gun that I should get for finished guitars. All of the painting will be with an airbrush. So the larger spray gun will just be used for lacquer.. maybe base coats. I will be building a spray booth and also will be getting a mask. So my next question is with a spray booth and my gun which is the best lacquer to use with it? I have been thinking about nitro because I like the fact that it meld together. But it takes so long to cure. Is there another lacquer that has a better curing time and melds together to prevent witness line? Sorry I know there are a lot of questions. Thank you for you time

  4. I appreciate the replies, I have been wanting to clear a couple of guitars for a while. But I have been doing my homework before I just go off galavanting with expensive and sometime dangerous chemicals. I liked the idea of the true oil or especially the Le Tonkinois because its shiny, nitro yellows and cracks and seems to be very fragile and I don't at this moment have the money to take it to a shop. But it looks like the later is probably best my option. I'll probably experiment with some of it.

    Thanks

  5. Im not a luthier although it sould like a blast. Im an artist and would like to put some are on some guitars. I have been thinking of ways to clear the artwork on the guitars and was curious about true oil. Has anyone ever use true oil over airbrush work? I like the idea of it being non toxic and Being able to apply it with out a brush.. I like the idea of the glossyness of nitro but that may get in the way of some of the artwork.. is true oil maybe my best bet?

    Thanks

  6. I have been wanting to put artwork on guitars but have been having a little trouble with the clear coat. I was curious if anyone in the atlanta area knew someone that painted cars that could help me out. I don't wanna spray really anything because I have kinda bad lungs as it is already. And right now no money for a mask.(I know its a 27 dollar investment, I just don't have 27 dollars right now) So I was kind curious if there was an automotive place that anyone knew could help me out. I've been calling but no one seems to wanna handle it for less than like 100 dollars and I can't pay that. Anyway if you can help thanks

  7. A dust mask will do nothing to protect you. In fact, it will make things worse, because you'll be taking deeper breaths through a dust mask.

The harmful stuff in these cans is in the form of gases, which will pass right through a dust mask.

I am using a nitro on a guitar that i am using do you think it is neccessary to use a respirator outside when sprayin deft or will a dust mask be enough?

  8. If the existing finish isn't compatible, your best bet is to strip it down to bare wood. Otherwise use a different clearcoat.

I don't know if this is a silly question or not but what is the easiest way to tell if the existing finish is compatible with the nitro? Other than the 2 part poly is there maybe another clearcoat that I can use instead of the nitro if it isn't compatible? Like maybe the waterbased finishes on stewmac?

  9. Okay cool the information helps a lot. I have used mostly createx airbrush paint on most of the guitars and is what i'll be using most often. Does createx have a reaction with lacquer that you know of? Also would it be better to strip the guitar first or is scuffing it and covering it with paint, enough to not make it react the clear under neath if they are not compatible?

    Thanks

  10. I am ordering the Nitro from Stew mac that sprays through a gun .. not the rattle can.. I had a couple of questions about taking care of the clear coat when its dried. First off

    1. How long does it take to wetsand after the initial spray?

    2. How many coats should I use?

    3. I was planning on (since i am not building but refinishing guitars as a start) scuffing the guitars with an 800 sand paper and then painting over then clearing... is that okay?

    4. Will it ruin the sound and the resonance and how bad?

    5. How Long does it take to cure FULLY?

I know I have asked a lot of questions but would be very excited to get the answers to these questions.

    Thanks for your time.

  11. I have seen some guitars online that have had painted fret boards. What do you have to do to paint on the fretboard. Is there some sort of sanding that you have to do.. if you do paint of the fretboard can you actually play it or is it just for looks.. Any info on this topic would be usefull.. thankyou

  12. The fact still remains that it is not designed to be used that way. And this guy is going to shell out about $100-300 for a paint job. I hope he doesn't waste his money thats all.

Yeah right..I am only paying 40$ for a automotive sprayer to clear my guitars. I paint them since I don't have a booth he clears them. I appreciate all the replies. I certainly was scared that my paint would get messed up and I don't want that to happen.

    Thanks

  13. the createx autoair stuff will work fine under 2 part poly. if that is the stuff you used, then your cool, however, if you used something else and want to be absolutely sure, spray a sample piece and take it to your sprayer to test with.

I didn't use the auto-color I used the regular createx paint. The auto-air is hard to find all the other colors.
