  1. yea what im mainly afraid about is the fact im getting the neck made from doug with the neckthru blank.. basically that is going to be really expensive, and I have to do the routing into the neckthru blank, so if I mess up the routing, its basically lots of lost money hehe I mean I could still use as set-neck or bolt on but thats not what I intended, if I mess up
  2. Hey, I am trying to get a custom guitar done, but I want it done right, so I dont wanna attempt it by myself for my first guitar ever... I am planning on getting a custom neck from doug sometime soon, which will be a neckthru blank.. Then once I get that, I was planning on maybe sending it to someone else, to have the wings of the body glued on, pickup/floyd routed, all that stuff.. I am talking with 2 different parties on this, pricing and etc, but progress is slow between them, and im not sure if the pricing will be cheap either lol.. I was wondering if theres anyone here who could help me glue on the wings, shape the body (simple shape) and do the correct routing and etc, or if you know someone who could do that for cheap (by cheap, I mean under $1000) Finishes I dont really need, as I think I can manage to do that myself, or least find a carpenter in my town who could help me with that, but the wood working aspect of the guitar, I want done right. if someone could do the paintjob also, along with the rest, that would be awesome too.. Thanks, any infomation is appreciated
  3. Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows a dealer that can get me some QPart knobs? I know one, but he basically orders hem from allparts then ships to me... in other words, he cant get the colors I want.. What im looking for is these ones Chrome dome / Blue Abalone top (2) Black dome / turquoise top (1) If anyone can help me find those, be greatly appreciated!
  4. How much generally do your customs cost Ben? I am planning one in afew months, would like to hear your price range
  5. Actually, I am considering just getting a strat neck I emailed Doug to see if he builds bolt ons, hopefully he does so then I can get one from him =]
  6. Ok guys, im about to have a bolt-on body built for me from some guy, but he doesnt have a jackson neck pocket trace.. only the standard Strat neck pockets I have a jackson replica guitar I wanna fit into this guitar, but I dont really have a scanner or anyway to trace it for him, I told him the estimated dimensions (3 by 2 1/8th is around right) which is so similar to strat neck pockets, I was thinking if I got it, I could just do some sanding for like one mm until it fits.. Think that would work? The one thing Im not sure about, is the rounded pocket on a strat, I THINK my jackson neck pocket is squared.. I have to double check it though, but either way I think it would be easier (and lots cheaper) to just have a strat pocket made and then get out the old sanding block and keep testing it until it fits.. Think thats a good idea? Also, if anyone has a jackson neck pocket trace, That would help immensly.. Thanks
  7. You should go play a triple pickup guitar for an hour or so, just to see if it will affect you I know personally, I can't have a pickup in the middle or I can't pick at all.. so it affects me pretty bad
  8. Hey.. I am getting a bolt-on body made for me, and I was curious about wood I have many Basswood bodies, having 3 RGs so I know their decent but not really bright, as I heard Maple is great and bright sounding I am planning on putting a Dimarzio x2n in the guitar.. Which tonewood would you pick? I am leaning towards Maple, but I never used it before.. but the maple is cheaper for me lol Also, if anyone has a Jackson neck-joint pocket dimensions, That would be super helpful. Thanks!
  9. Would that look awesome or what? Anyone have any pictures of that?
  10. There is different grades of wood, im almost positive that would not be the same basswood used in a Jem for instance, just as theres tons of alder types, and etc
  11. well take in mind there are different grades of wood, im assuming this is cheap basswood, not basswood similar in Jems. Also, No, I am not really going to play it thru a "metalhead" rig, I just was considering an EMG because I heard active pickups bypass most of the tonewood and take on a sound of their own, I would love to have a x2n in there, but mixed with cheap basswood, im very skeptical I would probably not change the bodyshape, because I will just wait to build my custom guitar for that shape, this shape is ok, it has the high back end I need for playing while standing so I can manage. Certain items work better with others, so that point chart would not work.. like Duncan pups with a maple body, would sound alot better than duncan pups in a basswood body, and so forth.
  12. Ok guys, I have a new idea for a project and I hope it can work because I am sooo broke hehe I found these guitars, called Douglas Hornets for $130 US and its basically a neckthru King V guitar. Check it out here Douglas Hornet guitars So I was planning on buying it, stripping the paint, filling the top pickup cavity with bondo or something, and applying a quilted veneer on the top, and so that would make it cool, one hum stringthru neckthru V for less than $200.. Heres what I am concerned about, I was thinking of putting a dimarzio X2N in it, but due to the bodywood being so cheap, I am ASSUMING its going to sound like **** regardless of what pickup I put in, so it really makes me reconsider even doing this project.. Do you guys think it would sound bad because of the main bodywood? I was also considering doing what I said in my last thread, about cutting the sides off and glueing on my own shape, that way I can have it to my comfort specifications, and the new wood might be better for sound hopefully lol What do you guys think about this? Thanks Also.. What if I put a EMG 81 in the bridge? would that make it abit better? I've heard before that active pickups don't deal so much with the tonewood, so it would be more the pickup rather the tonewood.. Is this just a rumor or sound somewhat true?
  13. wheres the cheapest place to buy veneer (good looking veneer!) and also what type of dye would be best?
  14. Hey all.. I had an idea for a project guitar in the future.. that would be easy to do, AND would be super cool! Find a 2hum neckthru guitar, any shape (lets say a strat shape) then just sand, strip all paint, and cut off the sides, and glue on two new blank boards for any shape I want, then sand/repaint and it should be back to normal, correct? Since the old body most likely was just 2 blanks glued to the middle board anyways, wouldn't that make sense if you want to make a custom shape guitar? Of course that would also give you a chance to get a better paintjob on, and you don't have to do all the routing of the floyd/pickups and take a chance messing up intonation.. Think that would work? spend like $200 on a cheap neckthru like Agile, then $100 on blanks and then just get some good paint.. I might try it heh Would this totally mess up the sound?
  15. eh.. I am getting a neckthru blank (if I do it myself) so I wont have to worry about the neck pocket, the thing im mainly worried about is the routing of the edge pro, so that intonation is correct.. and then the pickups and etc is not too hard im assuming.. I dunno maybe I will do it someday
  16. Yea. I do want the guitar built by myself, but im REALLY scared of messing up playability and intonation.. to the point im considering spending twice the overall cost just to have it done "right" If I do go for the neck-thru blank and make the guitar myself though, You're the first place im going to, Doug.. Its all a long time away though, I recently found a KE-1 so paying for that is more important at the moment, but come summer time, I will get started on this project
  17. yea I was really thinking of doing it all myself, but im afraid ill mess up like intonation and stuff, and make it look friggin nice but play like ****.. I emailed LGM and sadly, due to their new shop location and such, they are not taking custom orders right now, and I think I emailed the other guy afew months ago, but I think the prices were like $3000 or such, which if thats the case, I will just spend the $1000 on raw materials myself and wish for the best =[ Im not looking to go over $2000, because I am not exactly the richest guy ever lol
  18. I was wondering if there is anyone around here that can do a custom guitar job! I am looking for this to be built, but I have no wood working experiance, and no tools.. I found a dude who can do a nice neck for me, just wont have some of the options I want, but it does have afew that are very important to me, its a real tradeoff lol.. Anyways, if anyone is a professional builder or would wanna try to help me do this for cheap, I would be greatful =] Specs: Wood: Alder body, Maple neckthru Body : Modified Jackson Death Kelly, with an upper horn Neck headstock : Reverse Jackson normal Neck joint : Neck-thru Top : Blue quilted maple Pups : 2 Humbuckers, with pickup rings (planning on buying two Duncan DMLWs) Bridge : Edge lo-pro (black) Volume + tone knobs, both chrome/blue pearl tops (Qparts) 3way Mini toggle switch Stomach Contour on the back Blue pearl rear covers (terrapinguitars.com makes nice ones) The neck specs are the most important part for me, the above (other than the body shape/routes) is something I can do myself, but the neck is the most important Jumbo frets Rosewood fretboard Wizard I Contour back (Most important part) 25.5 scale 25 frets (24 working, 25th half-hanging) 21 to 24 possibly scalloped (not too important, but would be nice) White neck binding My custom inlays (Quoted for $100 at custominlays.com thru another neck builder, so $200-300 max) The inlays are simple, basically star inlays and a "sun" at the 12th fret Hopefully anyone could tell me a general price range that isnt too bad, and if it is to my liking, I will consider doing business with you! Thanks for your time
  19. Anyway to take a bolton neck, add a plank to it and make a neckthru with it? Or would that be like, totally defeating the whole purpose of a neckthrough? lol even tho it would be 2 pieces of wood glued together, the joint would be ALOT stronger, and more comfortable for the hands.. Think this is something worth looking into?
  20. www.terrapinguitars.com BEST place for pickgaurds.. im ordering one on monday thats gonna be a 2hum RG350 replacement, should be awesome =]
  21. How hard would it be to replace a fretboard? like if I had a guitar that was nice but I just wanted to replace the fretboard on it with another one (assuming the length was the same/etc) Also.. anyone know where to order Wizard shape neckthrough necks? I would LOVE to have a wizard ibanez neck thats neckthru with a new fretboard, and a diff body lol.. I dream too much =[[
  22. i dont see any ibanez pickgaurds there.. can strat pgs fit ibanez?
  23. Hey.. I am going to buy an RG350DX this weekend I am pretty sure, and looking to replace the normal pickgaurd on it with something fancy.. Where would be the best place to get one without so much trouble, and not over $50 preferably.. I just want something that would look cool lol.. Oh yeah, I am wanting to make it a H/H configuration.. removing the Middle SC pup slot.. So that might make things abit more difficult.. hmmm anyone have any ideas? I checked all the plays on ProjectGuitar's supply list, most seemed like heaps of trouble and like $80 for each. =[ Could someone make one for me or something? lol
  24. Do they need to be calculated specifically? I am getting a neck made from doug soon and I dunno if he adds the tuning holes or not, if not I wanna know if I have to do some crazy measurements or anything.. anything will help =] Thanks
