  1. How much can a regular drill press do? This is for fretting.

I was so happy yesterday that I'd get to finish my first neck when I tried to press the frets with my drill press

But it seemed it was too weak. :D

I quickly backed away halfway into my second fret when I realized this won't do..

Pulled out the frets and all

But am I just getting scared? Or are drill presses far more capable then just drilling, including giving a half-ton pressure with ease?

  2. Wow. Your jigs are insane.

The Scarface is my fav. <3

And then the ADJUSTABLE radius sanding... that thing.... would be so useful..

Did you try doing Multi-radius with that thing?

I can tell there's a large focus on Precision in all your jigs as well as your builds.

    Awesome stuff.

    Btw, you say...

I figure that by the time I'm 60 or so, I'll be able to build an instrument that will compare favorably to other lower end customs that are available now.

But if you don't mind me asking, how old are you now? (Or passively, when would that be?)

  3. - glued the neck to the wings, then I realized i'd forgotten about the fret slots (won't be easy to cut them afterwards since the fretboard doesn't stick out)

    This is gonna be hardcore...

But first of all, why is the fretboard at the same level as the top?

BTW, is the fretboard radiused already? If it is, you'll get lot of help when slotting..

    If not... I don't know.. :D

When I first saw the design I was like.. this is crazy...

Then I saw the carbon fibre.. this guy is pretty crazy..

Then I saw the epoxy finish... this guy is mental!

    All in a good way.

I would love to see this guitar finish nicely. Desgin wise, it looks like a candy to play.

I can see lots of creativity in this guitar, which I find fascinating.

Keep up the good work and hope you'll learn as much as you can!

  4. Thx,

    It isn't preradiused,

I did have a slight tear, I don't know how it happened, but if you can look on the left side just below the truss rod, there's a slight tear and you can see it on the fingerboard (symmetrically)

Little ugly, but not so much that it will cause any trouble.

Is it okay to leave the wood to dry under sun for few hours? Or will it warp?

I have no clue to what I'm doing when it comes to all those moisture contents, kln dried, etc.. :D

edit: on a second thought, that sounds like a bad idea.. i'll give the wood at least 3 days..

  5. metal solos eh...

When you listen to the music.. can't you tell that much of it is just spontaneous? Not so much as improvised, but there is no certain rule or range of notes or rhythms to metal solos.. that's what makes.. metal solos..

Sometimes, it doesn't fit, it doesn't sound right, if you grew up with it, you might not be able to experience this, but sometimes.. metal just doesn't make any musical sense (the more modern stuff) .. but that in itself is part of the "beauty" of it.

In the end, you just gotta go crazy and like thrasher! said much of it comes from just trying licks, improvising, and polishing them to the right tone.

There are few bands like.. Metallica (ahem.. mainstream metal) who writes their solos.. and you can tell right away that somebody wrote those lines.

Also.. techniques are needed.. such as.. fast alternate picking, tapping, double-tapping, sweep picking, bends, lots of times - crazy trem actions.. and attitude.. those metallists all have.

Man.. if SteveVai had that attitude.. he'd be the craziest metal guitarists.. but he's too much of an artist, all about character.. not that it's a bad thing

  6. K, hmm that seems pretty good. Thx for the info Guitarfrenzy!

Now.. one more question to anyone who knows.

I have a steam iron, but it's not automatic. It's a manual button type.

Basically, would it hurt to oversteam? And what exactly is the function of the steam?

I can only predict so that.. the wood doesn't burn? Moisturize the wood for better bending?

    Thx in advance.

  7. I know that the tutorial on the main site requires the neck to already have the frets in, but I have a neck at the moment, which needs to be removed.

The problem doesn't seem bad, it's just that I put a masking tape under the fretboard and glued in together and you can see it slightly from the sides.

The tutorial on the site says you NEED the frets so that the fingerboard doesn't warp when you steam iron it.

Now, I COULD radius the fingerboard, inlay, and fret it, THEN take the whole thing out, remove the tape and sand it down a bit, then glue it back on.

But I'd rather try to remove this before radiusing the fretboard as it might not sit too well after I removed the tape, but theretically it should. I'll just need to be careful about the sanding.

So the question, Is there a way to remove the fingerboard without its frets?

Silly me... it all happened because the fingerboard arrived so late, I was in a rush..

  8. Yes, I print mine from Kinko's

If it's in 1:1 ratio, just give them the file and tell them to print it.

If it's not.. you might have to figure some out, the guys at Kinko's were nice enough to help me out

That's wierd though... .plt file? I think .pdf would be so much easier..

The guys at Kinko's always converted to .pdf and printed, they used Adobe Illustrator I think

It usually comes to about Canadian 5/6/7 bucks, so it's not that bad

But I have a question, how are you viewing your AutoCAD files? AutoCAD programs, 3d Render.. Adobe..?

  9. StewMac.. Wow.. I ordered something from StewMac last friday.. about $400 worth and it arrived Monday.. at noon. I was still sleeping and was like.. "What the hell!" Then passed the sleep inertia and then thanked the guy.. He must've thought I was on crack... :D

Incredibly fast, they are, the StewMac. Mmmhmmm
