  1. From what I know...and I'm no expert, the inlay material you buy is flat. You inlay them into a radiused board leaving some of the inlay material stickin up above the board and then sand it down. I'm sure someone with much more knowledge than I have can chime in and go into more detail...
  2. Yeah, I'd want one. I've always liked them personally.
  3. Check out universaljems.com Brian used to sell it from there I believe...
  4. Are there any rounded-back (aka Ovation-style) guitar kits available? If so, where can I find them? Thanks, Steve
  5. Can someone please explain to me the difference between the ceramic and alnico pick ups? What are the benefits and the downside of each? I'm building a Les Paul and like a crunchier sound and am not sure which style to go with. Thanks in advance for the help. Steve
  6. Dedication can't overcome for inexperience. That's a big thing I've learned. You may have killer ideas and wants, but when it's your first project you have to research, research, research and then decide what you can do and what you can't do...yet. Patience grasshopper...
  7. Any chance someone out there has the Gibson 490R and 498T pickups in chrome that they don't need and want to sell?
  8. I've PM'd you twice with my PayPal info. Let me know if you're not getting the messages for some reason.
  9. Brian did a tutorial on the main page about scalloping a fret board. It seems pretty "easy" but I've never tried it. Check the tutorials and you'll find it.
  10. Yeah, I came up with the design and sent it to Al to create for me. Since then, I've decided not to use them.
  11. I've got two sets of inlays that I'm not going to use. Both sets are made of 1/8" white pearloid materials. Here are links to see 'em: http://photobucket.com/albums/v487/sscovil...nTrapezoids.jpg http://photobucket.com/albums/v487/sscovil...NakedInlays.jpg Selling for $15 each or both for $25 plus shipping. Thanks, Steve
  12. Yeah, I do too and I'm not trying to take anything away from him, just passing along some info. I thought his prices were excellent considering the materials he uses. As always, make your own decision about who to use for your project.
  13. I hope it's alright to post this here. If not, I'm sure one of the MODs will beat me with a stick and move it. I found a guy that does great inlay work (custom or standard) with real MOP at great prices. I'm not associated with him or his company at all, but I thought it might be helpful to others to check out his site, work and prices: http://www.custominlay.com/cgi-bin/store.n...f&L=eng&P=2-162
  14. Sure, send it and let me take a look at if if you don't mind.
  15. Thanks, but if you read one of my previous posts, I posted a link to what I was able come up with. Thanks for the effort though. Steve
  16. Yeah, I get what you mean and it's a cool idea, but I really dig what I came up with and am anxious to see if I can pull it off. I'm thinking I'll cut the black leather first by laying the body face down on it and cutting it precisely with an xacto knife and then hand cut the grey flames and have them sewn on. Then, I'll try to glue the whole thing to the body. Hopefully it will work...
  17. Here's what I've come up with. Both pieces will be leather. http://photobucket.com/albums/v487/sscovil...s-Grey-Copy.jpg
  18. That's pretty cool, but I want my flames coming up from the bottom instead of the top. I even have a way to raise them...IF I can find an image I can use.
  19. Alright, bear with me here...I've got an idea, but I need a little help if possible. I'm doing a black leather top on my Les Paul project and I had the idea of adding some grey leather flames (classic style) to it coming up from the bottom. I can even have the grey flames sown on top of the black leather. The problem I'm having, is that I can't draw and can't find any scalable images of flames that would work and fit the basic shape of the Les Paul. So, if anyone out there is a graphics guru (and I know there are), would you be able or willing to help me with this? Thanks, Steve
  20. No carved top. This is going to be flat and covered with leather. As far as the wiring channel goes, I've drilled from the switch cavity through the PU cavities and then diagonally down to the controls.
  21. The neck I'm using is plain mahogany...nothing fancy. Unfortunatley, I don't have progress pics. I always intended to take my digital camera to my friend's shop where I worked on it, but I forgot the damn thing every time!
  22. Thanks for the comments. I'd honestly prefer a carved top, but since this is my first project, I decided to go for the "easier" style and see how I do with that and also make sure it plays nice.
  23. Alright, I've been hanging around here forever, asking a ton of question and being a general pain in the ass trying to decide on my first project and how to do it. So, here are a couple photos of my project so far. I'm doing a flat-top Les Paul that I plan to cover the top with black leather (faux) and paint the sides and back gloss black with the classic-style silver/mirror flames on the back. The body is made from two pieces of mahogany glued together. Click on the link below to see a couple photos. Neck photos will hopefully be posted next weekend. http://photobucket.com/albums/v487/sscovil...?action=options
  24. Excellent! Thanks for the info!! But...I'm assuming you have to do more asking in order to keep the clear from overspraying onto the body, right?
  25. Wow. I'm surprised. I thought the edge was routed, then taped off, but you're saying it hasn't been routed at all? Interesting....
