  1. I decided to just slap wood filler on it and Im gonna let that dry over night and sand it tomorrow
  2. Oh my gosh, let me explain this. So I am refinishing my squire strat, nothing important. I've tried everything, scraping the grain filler, burning, filing, sanding and much more. Burning it off with a heat gun has proved the best but I scorched the wood in places. This thing is beat to all get out. Scorch marks, un even grain and just uneveness all over the place. I made a big oopsie tonight. So I thought "why not plane it?" so I get my hand planer and I got it so uneven. So I thought why not mix some dust I have from sanding everything and mix that with titebond? I did it, absolute mess, and it's gonna look so ugly. This is the only glue I have right now but I ordered some number 10 thin super glue today. I am just angry at myself for it just looking god awful. This is my first time doing stuff like this and it's proved harder than it is. I went over it with a level to get excess off but still, it looks bad.
  3. I am placing quite a big order today from stew mac for some stuff I need. I am getting a 25 inch scale fret template and a japanese fret saw with a depth stop. Next I am getting 4 feet of medium fret wire. Then I am getting some Titebond liquid hide glue. Next I am getting the set of the "trade secrets" books. I am also getting some super glue (10 thin) and some whip tips! I am excited for all this when christmas comes!
  4. Can't I technically just glue and hammer them in? I really don't see the reason to go and spend almost 200 dollars at stew mac for a fret bender when I probably don't even have to. If I do however, I have radiusing blocks, so can't I use those, and put the fretwire against those and shape tap them to the desired radius? Thanks
  5. I got a miter box with a 90 degree slot so I think I'm good. I just need to get a saw and the scale template, match up the lines and trace them and cut and I'm set!
  6. I was thinking along the lines of Paul Reed Smith's first guitar. He built it out of mahogany, it was an LP SC body and a flat top. I was thinking along the lines of that since it's simple! I wanted to move up as I kept building. After that I would experiment with a figured top and stuff like that.
  7. Hey, so I noticed in my introduction to luthiery that there are a lot of jigs that you need for certain things. The one I need right now is a fret slotting jog. So naturally, I go to Stewmac and LMII and they were almost 300 dollars! Now me, being only 15 years old, and having asked my parents for a lot for my neck project, I don't think another 300 dollars isn't what they want to do, and right before Christmas. Now, I was sitting in class and the idea came to me, I saw that the jigs had ball bearings for the guide for the blade. I basically made a layout to where its a base and two side walls big and wide enough to accept a fretboard blank. The blade will go through the ball bearing slot and slot the frets perfectly. All the measurements will be notched off on the fretboard. Leave your thoughts below.
  8. Hello, I am a first time builder and I am looking for wood for a body. I was thinking to just work with mahogany first, then mahogany with a flame top, then that but semi hollow, and the same thing but with swamp ash and buckeye burl. I am just looking for something good, not top grade, just for a first build
  9. So it's basically a block of wood, with the middle routed out big enough to hold a beam to support it. There is space of each side, so it's a block with the middle cut out. Then on the places where it isn't cut out, there are ball bearings to guide the saw. On that beam, that's where the fretboard will go. I make lines of all the frets with a fret scale template and feed and cut it through my jig!
  10. I just found out you need yet ANOTHER jig for cutting fret slots. I don't even have a bandsaw yet! I ran a planer over my wood to plane it but it seems un even in a place or two. I don't have a big old electric planer. I think my neighbor might have one. I am getting very overwhelmed when it comes to what is essential to crafting a guitar neck. Could someone please guide me on what tools I would need? I already have: Hand planer (windsor number 33) Going to get a shinto saw rasp router neck template neck curve shaping template truss rod fretboard (honduran rosewood) neck (white limba) Drills beyond belief Hand chisel (for shaving off material in certain places) I just need to get a bandsaw and a shinto saw rasp. I am just really worried about all this not being equal or something like that and then end up wasting all this material. This is my first time and I don't know where to go for guidance.
  11. I mean like what kid wants powertools for christmas? Most kids my age want like a PS5 or something like that
  12. Got grounded for working with powertools without supervision! Hopefully soon!
  13. So I got a truss rod from stew mac and it is the low profile 18 inch rod for electric guitars. So I have a 25-26 inch piece of white limba. I know you have to put straight down the middle and cut and ream to the right diameter. It's hypothetically in right, so I am using a template from stew mac (58 strat neck template) When I trace and cut everything, will everything like the nut, fretboard and stuff fall right into place? I got a template for this reason. My main question is, when everything is cut and routed, I can put my truss rod on, then my neck and nut and go on?
  14. Well I did this as a impromptu joke to be honest. Have you ever watched Rob Scallon? He made this thing called a "djent shovel" where he took a shovel, and slapped some parts on it and made it do djent metal. I took something like that and took some cheapey parts I had laying around, no plan what so ever, slapped some parts in wrong places (I think I got the bridge, tail piece and nut correct but the tuner is abominable) and it's all a joke
  15. It's a joke. People make what they call "Djent sticks" out of hockey sticks, or even shovels. Look up rob scallon and his djent stick. I'm going for something like his but this is all a big joke. I could get like a .62 gauge string and tune it drop F and djent away for a haha
  16. Really!! I mean shoot I STILL need to get a bandsaw but I'm most likely getting one for christmas
  17. This isn't part of my actual build, but more of a meme than anything since I wasn't actually working on stuff tonight!
  18. https://imgur.com/gallery/vIXDQ47 Well I decided to take a piece of scrap plywood, and put a bridge, saddles, nut and single tuner on it for all the djenty boys and girls out there! Hope this gets me something?
  19. Hey yall, so I got a planer (winsor no. 33 hand planer) and I have white limba for a neck and honduran rosewood for a fingerboard. My dad who is helping me with this project is telling me not to plane the wood since it was already cut. I went over the wood a few times each just to plane everything up. Do I need to plane the wood that was already cut? Thanks
  20. I got basically everything, I just need to get a bandsaw and a router for the neck and I am ready to build my own guitar!!
  21. Oh yea I just wanted a smaller one for now! I just need a bandsaw, the rasp and a router and I can start building!!!
  22. I got a windsor design number 33 plane with two handles. I also got a little moisture gauge just to check to see if the wood is dry. It's very dry!
  23. Hey yall, I am building a neck for the first time and I am excited to share that I finally got my template! I'm using a 57 strat shape from stew mac and a 62 strat neck profiler (to make the actual neck) from stewmac as well. I also got a truss rod as well. I went to harbor freight and got a moisture gauge (surprisingly my wood that I got, which is white limba and honduran rosewood is so dry!) and a mat to work on and planer for planing my wood!
  24. I am going to buy a stew mac hot rod truss rod (18 inches for an electric) but will I be able to adjust it like I can on my PRS or my strat? I dont know if the way I install it will be the way I will be able to adjust it. I'm making a set neck guitar, so would this type of truss rod be acceptable for it?
