First, I admit to being new here and maybe this has been discussed ad nauseum previously. After spending 20 plus years doing minor repairs as part of my job running a music store, I decided a couple of years ago to try my hand at building guitars. I’ve done several kit builds which included some minor body mods, just to make them play to my liking. My next step is going to be building from scratch, but in my planning I’m debating what wood to use for my fingerboard. Since rosewood is rather expensive at this point and I’m not a big fan of the feel of maple, I was considering trying black walnut for my fingerboard but am a little concerned about whether it will hold up and if it needs like a lacquer seal. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
