  1. Bandwidth refers to the amount of data transfered from a server, usually it marks a limit of how much data can be transmitted from a server in a month. If 10 people visit a page that is 100kb in size, then you have used 1,000kb of your bandwidth. A "Broad-Band" connection is a connection with high-bandwidth, meaning it can transfer lots of information quickly, versus a low-bandwidth dial up connection The only way to lessen bandwidth usage is to A) Have fewer visitors to the site ( ) or have smaller pages with fewer graphics. Note: As far as I know, haveing pictures linked to other websites does not affect your bandwidth. All the messages on the boards that have pictures that are links to other 'gallery' websites do not impact the bandwidth usage here.
  2. www.warmoth.com sells all the jaguare/mustang/jazzmaster controll plates for like $8 each. Not bad. I'm pretty sure they are metal, like a Tele controll plate.
  3. Its looking sharp! I've havent heard of most of those woods, but they sure are purdy. I wonder how they will effect the tone.
  4. Jaguar shaped body (big surprise ) Super figured flamed Koa on a Mohogany semi-hollow body, whith maybe some cocobolo sandwiched in between Maple/Mohogany/Maple/Mohogany/Maple 5 piece laminate neck Deep-set-tennon neck extending past the bridge Pao Ferro fretboard with "banjo style" scroly-flowery inlays 25.5 scal length, 24 fret Hardtail bridge, string through... Might have to steal Brians idea too Seymour Duncan HBs, maybe Custom Custom in bridge, Jazz in neck 6-way rotory switch giving me easy access to a variety of sounds Accoustic bridge pickups (maybe one of those Ghost setups?), with a push/pull knob on the volume to switch between accoustic and electric. This way I can play the accoustic then quickly slap the volume knob and be back to electric for the big chours! Locking Planet Waves string trimming tuners Gold hardware Either an Oil finish then glossed over, or some sick looking tobaco burst... or somethin...
  5. Good news, your guitar will be easy to wire! For what you are doing you'll just need the two wire type pickups. There are a few great sites about guitar wireing that you should look at. The best way to go about this is to learn to do it yourself, I just recently learned myself and its all pretty easy. DGB Studio Guitar Nuts These are great sites and have lots of diagrams.
  6. Maiden69, Wow, that blue guitar is a SEXY BEAST! Looks like we're on the same page with the neck joint. I keep looking over at the heel on my tele and wondering what my new life will be like with an AANJ. I definately like the way the ferrules look, very slick and clean... and man... that blue guitar... I hate to say it, but I liked the back almost more than the front, with that crazy 5 piece flamed maple neck, and the burst and all And on a side note, you just reminded me I wanted to change my Avitar... PerryL, How wierd! Maiden69 and I were looking at your guitar pictures the other day! Are those Seymour Duncan pups you are putting in, or are they another brand? I'm curious to see how the blade style pup sounds.
  7. The 59 comes in a single coil as well as a HB, the Jazz is a HB only. I listened to the samples on the Seymour Duncan website... Compated to the Alnico II, the 59's clean sounds more "muffled," and its dirty has some harsh overtones that I didnt like. The Jazz pickup, though a very nice suggestion of which I may use in another guitar, wasnt the sound I was looking for on this insturment. Thanks though!
  8. Ok, So obviously I've been reading up on guitar electonics recently, but I gots some questions still: 1. Whats the difference between an audio taper pot, and a linear one? 2. Whats the difference between a no load pot, and... a reguar one?
  9. Maiden69, Ah! I see! You're talking about rounding out the heel with countersunk ferrulles. Do you think that will be more beneficial than an all out AANJ like this one? Thats what I was thinking. Puckup commentators, I play a lot of different stuff: blues, blues-rock, funk, modern rock, jazz. For the most part, I wanted this guitar to be my "rock guitar," so I wanted relatively hot pups, though, I still have those heavy funk/blues/jazz influences, so I want to still keep it relatively vintage and mid-sy. Currently I'm thinking: Neck : Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II Strat Neck Pup Bridge: Seymour Duncan Custom Custom Humbucker Though there were a few other neck pup's I was looking too. Thanks!
  10. I found this link at one point in my searchings: Koa Guitar Wood They are a company in Hawaii that deals exclusively with Koa wood for luthiers. Expensive stuff! Nice, but expensive!
  11. Thanks Thoughtless! Actually I hadnt said yet. I was kinda hoping to get a few reccomendations. I know I want a good strat pickup for the neck, and a hot-yet-vintagey humbucker in the neck. I tend to use Seymore Duncan, however I'd like to see what other people might reccomend, you never know!
  12. No, apparently I lied... It tapers all the way up, it just looks like it stops right about the heel... Had to bust out the ruler for that one!
  13. I would assume you mark your centerline, then measure whatever your width at the nut is, mark that, then mark out the width where the taper starts (~15th fret on my tele), then with a straight edge draw lines between thse points and saw the neck. There might be a better way though...
  14. Maiden69, Yeah, I have a Telecaster and the heel drives me nuts. That Jag body has less of a cout out, so I think I will go ahead and do the AANJ. After seeing your pic (nice BTW) I'm sure there will be enough wood there. Warmoth I know sells those reduced neckplates and I was planning on getting one regardless, but what other than access would be the benefet of going the ferrules rout? I've heard the neck plate adds a level of structual integrity.
  15. I dunno... That matched headstock is growing on me... the more I look at it... Tell you what, if this one goes well, and if I still leave near people who have tools ( ) I want to do a second Jaguar. A nice flamed Koa top on a semi hollow Mohagony body... <Homer> mmmm... Koa on Mohagony.... </Homer>
  16. Ok, so I was curious to see what that thing would look like with all given suggestions so far: While I wasnt keen on dropping the plate in the lower right, I must admit, it does look a lot cleaner (and it would save me some money too!) I may go ahead and leave it off. I made the headstock match the body, and I'm pretty sure I dont like that as much. It wouldnt be too hard to get a veneer and stain it like the body, but I kind like the way it look ligher, especially on fender guitars. I also switched the 5 way switch out for a rotary switch, I think that looks cleaner too, but I'd still rather have the switch, I dunno... Maiden69, Yeah, that looks like what I was going for. I was debating an AANJ too, but that may be pushing my luck. Thank you for that link! G_uu_ra, For that neck pickup, couldnt I just leave enough slack in the wires from the pickup to the switch so that I can just pull it out of the way? I'm not 100% clear on why the pickup has to be completely detached from the body for me to be able to slide my neck out.
  17. You know. Thats so simple to do, I may just go for it. I was aiming for a level of simplicity for controlls, but a two way switch would be unabtrusive, especially if I had a push/pull on the volume. Thanks for the idea. Any pickup sugestions? I've got a couple of Seymore Duncans picked out, but if theres something else out there you think is worth a look, let me know!
  18. Wow, I studied stuff like this in my accoustics class in College and loved it. I still have my text book, so if theres anything I can do to help, let me know. I'll see if I cant dig through the book and find any answers to your questions. I remember one day the teacher putting a big rubber drum head over a speaker and blasting loud tones. He then turned out the lights, and turned on a strobe light set to the same frequency of the tone being played. You could see in slow motion the movement of the drum head, and the way it oscilated around its nodes. Wierd stuff. Loved it.
  19. Hey, thanks for checking for me, I appreciate it! I just used photoshop to do it. I also have a dingbat font that is nothing but electronic bits and pieces, its called Carr Electronic Dingbats. You can probably find it at DaFont if you are interested. Thanks again!
  20. This being my first wireing layout, I figured I'd run it past you all to see if there are any mistakes, suggestions, warnings, or better ideas. I'll be using a 5 position, 4 pole switch: AB (humbucker, bridge) C (single coil, neck) 1: C 2: B and C in parallel (strat-ish sound) 3: A and C in series (Brian Mays-ish sound, maybe out of phase?) 4: A (Tapped, maybe AB with a cap in series to fatten it up?) 5: AB I'm also up for pickup reccomendations. I'm looking for a good bluesy strat pickup for the neck, and a hot yet vintagy humbucker for the bridge. I usually use Seymore Duncan, but I've heard Tom Anderson pickups are also very nice. Thanks!
  21. Yeah, its easy to get carried away for the first guitar. I did read about the Direct Coupling on Ed Romans site, but I must admit, I was partially inspired by Brian Mays guitar, which used direct coupling as well. I was a little concerned about how difficult it could be to construct, but wouldnt it be as simple as making your template and neck a little longer? Diagrams not to scale. jefm, You may be right, the bolt on may be too thin for this, in which case, yes, I would just bolt it to the body. I dont think I'd need to desolder anything... The idea behind bolting it to the neck is so that the pup is influenced more bye the vibrations in the neck's wood. Its not so much that the mounting screws are planted in the neck wood, so much as the pickup itslef is pressed against the end of the tennon. The screws will be mounted in the body Its not that I think it will have a giant effect on the tone, but rather, its a small step towards achiving something specific. asm, Thanks. Being a Fender Jaguar copy I'd just assume leave the controll plates where they are. The silly thing is that I'm not planning on putting any switches in those plates.
  22. Picture a regular bolt on, regular bolt pattern, but with another inch or so of wood sticking out for the Neck PUP to sit on. Its nothing I have my heart set on. Whats it called, direct coupling I think?
  23. So, I've literally been researching guitar building for a year, and feel like I have a decent grasp on things. Heres a pic of what I think I'll be doing. Here's what I got in my head: Maple Neck / Pao Fero Fret Board Not 100% sure if I can do the inlays Mohogany Body / Flamed Maple Top Bold On Neck, with the tennon extending under the Neck PUP String Through 24 Fret Strat Pup in Neck, Some kind of HB in the Bridge, havent decided yet 5 way switch, volume knob. I'll use the controll plates, but I wont mount anything in them, I think they look cool 5 Way switch: AB (humbucker) C (single coil) 1: C 2: B and C in parallel (strat-ish sound) 3: A and C in series (Brian May-ish sound? I dunno, its a stretch) 4: A (maybe AB with a cap in series a la DGB studio) 5: AB I want to do a bevelaged edge like on a SG, but I'm not sure if that will work too good on the Jag body. I'll stain it darker, and put that pinstripe coming off of the bridge, which is the only differance from the pic, I'll use one of those Hipshot hardtail bridges. I'm still not sure if I want to build the neck and try fretting it, I've looked around though, and cant find anyone who sells necks though the way I want one. Dunno, what do you all think?
  24. Hey teknohippy, You said you were going for a black stripe on that guitar, but I noticed in the picture that the stripe on the treble side of the body showed wood grain. You should think about leaving it that way, I think it look way cool that way, IMHO of course. But do what looks best to you. I think printing a decal for the blood splatter is probably your best bet. Slopping paint on the wood would be too random I think, and you'd have no real way to controll how much of the yellow coat showed through. You could use a printed template, but cutting it would be a major pain, and you'd loose a lot of the rich splattering detale that makes the blood look so cool. I'd go for the decal method personally. Then again, I may not know what I'm talking about...
