  1. Oh, and how do you do the natural binding? I think I remember seeing a tutorial about that somewhere, but I lost it...
  2. Hey, I was looking at the entries September guitar of the month contest, and really liked the finish on francelj's second guitar. I think he said it was just oil on flamed maple. Is that just tung oil on the raw maple, is it stained, filled, dyed...? eh?
  3. 10111 on the 10001th. I remember when I use to think 23 was old, but I'd prefer to keep my left testicle.
  4. Huh... Judging from the pattent info, its more or less a matter of moving the nut up a tad, and intonateing either a hare sharp or flat depending on the string/octive... Get a good tuner and ruler, and you're set!
  5. Ah, That sounds good then. I was planning on getting some figured maple from LMII, along with the frettboard anyhow. Thanks!
  6. Hmmm... I was about to buy neck blanks from ExoticWoods... Keep us posted!
  7. Does anybody have any experience with the Buzz Feiten tuning system? I was reading about it last night, and I noticed that all the autorized dealers that charged $130+ for it claimed it was the best thing ever, and had lots of "if Steve Vai likes it, so should you!" Buuuut, when I started looking at personal pages from non dealers, suddenly everybody was saying it wasnt that great, and in fact, less flexible when changing string guages and brands. I've heard of guitar shops avoiding buying guitars with this system! Anybody out there whos had any personal experience with Mr. Feiten's innovation?
  8. Muh! I played one briefly while visiting a church I use to attend. The guitar player sunday monring had one, so I stopped to "chat with him." The thing was so light! I thought it would sound terrible, but mang, was I wrong! Great tone, near perfect intonation. I stummed a few inverted seven chords to see, and they sounded nice and clear. The gentleman that owned it told me of another carbon fiber guitar owner that wanted to test its strength. He threw it in a pond in his back yard one night. Being in Denver, the pond froze, and in the morning, the man carefully pulled the guitar back out. Still in tune. Yiesh. I want...
  9. Very interesting! I wasnt neccessarily just asking about those 3 guitars, just examples. Like I said, its hard to find this info on the net (well, for me anyhow), so I thought it would be cool to post this topic for everyones benefit! Any other guitars? PRS, SG's, Parker's, Jaguar's, etc?
  10. I have been searching the internet with little yeild as to what contributes to various guitar tones. For example: What makes a Tele sound like its twangy Tele self? Its bridge, its body shape? What makes a Strat sound blusey? The pickups, the wood? A Rickenbacker chimey? The cool triangle inlays, purty finishes? Whatever, I'd be interested to see where this topic goes. Fire away!
  11. So, uh... If I got two singlecoils, sat them next to each other (humbucker style), and wired/adjusted the magnets correctly, would that effectively land me with a humbucker of sorts? Or am I missing a step? The reason I ask is this (and maybe somebody could help me a bit): I basically want a bridge humbucker that would sound relatively "Gibson-ish," but then I could select just one coil and get a Telecaster sound. Meh. Probably is too much of a stretch, but I figured I'd ask. Thanks!
  12. Oh, I get it! Very clever, way to think "out of the box!" Har Har Har!
  13. Well, What can be said? Amaizing! What pickup system did you use (I assume is some sort of piezo)? I'm planning to do something simmilar, and I had my eye on the Graph-Tec "FAAS/Ghost" system ( http://www.tusq.com/product_display.asp?Se...and&brand=Ghost ), and was wondering if you have had experience with it. But yeah,

    Surform?

Actually, today I gave it a shot. I'm working on an old bass I got from a pawn shop, and had removed the f'board from the neck. I wasnt having much luck getting the old glue off with sand paper, so I gave the surform a shot for kicks. Actually, it worked pretty good! I think the "cheese grater" blade was dull or something, cause it cleaned off all the old glue in a few passes, but didnt touch the wood at all. I checked, no wood shaveings came off, they were only glue. Not bad, eh?
  15. Looks like the bass player from Limp Bizkit. If not, that guy has frett lights too!

    Surform?

Mang, If only I could stumble upon a bandsaw, or a drillpress... or a new car... something usefull.
  17. That would look slick from the side. Though, I like the way they layers of wood show up when you start carving the "comfort curves" (arm rest, belly area, etc). I always thought the way some of PRS's guitars had their lower horn carved was cool, so that you could see both the top and bottom woods.
  18. I'd say you could mount them deeper into the neck, but the truss rod is in the way. Maybe the way to go would be to get smaller LED's, mount them horizontally, and fill the f'board inlay dots with a "cloudy epoxy substance" that would glow, rather than just have the raw LED shining. Eh?
  19. Nah, I just followd the fretboard removal tut last week to take the f'board off of an old bass of mine. It was easy cheezy. The only thing to keep in mind is that its a SLOW process. It took me about 2 hours to get mine off. Its boreing as all getout. Go really slow or you'll destroy the wood. One frett at a time. Installing LED's in the board sounds easy in theory. Just rout out channels for the wire, and drill holes for the LED's, and top them off with clear epoxy. Of course, if something comes disconnected, or a LED burns out (can that even happen?) you gotta take the whole thing back apart. A potential pain in the arse.
  20. Hey all, Today I scored a sureform while helping my Father clean out his garage. I know its a tool commonly used to shape wood, but I have no idea what its for, when to use it, how to use it, or... yeah, how to use it. I played with it, and shaved the edge of some plyboard smooth, but outside of that, I'm clueless!
  21. Drak, How did you finish that guitar? It looks wonderfull, especially with the gold hardware. Did you stain it at all, or is that just the wood itself?
  22. Theoretically you could use a router with a straight cut bit to do planing/doining, yes? Hmm... I could see complications in making sure the router moves in a straight line.
