  1. I can't blame it on paint. The tearouts happened when I drilled (pre paint). I need a drill press to get them going through straight. I ended up with nicely alligned holes on top and a poor looking top. I'm thinking of a P90 follow up. What brand of P90's are good? I had a Godin LGSP90 once, but the shorter scale didn't work for me.
  2. I'd suggest using the Fralin humbuckers if you are doing something similar. After completing this guitar my G&L Bluesboy with the Seth Lover in the neck sounded rather sterile. The Fralin PAF sound is jazzy to rockin and sounds very alive.
  3. Here are a few pics of my first guitar/ I got a lot of information searching the posts on this site and I appreciate everyone's help. There are plenty of mistakes and problems, but my guitar plays and sounds great. I used a 2" thick mahogany body and put on a 1/4" maple cap. Before I put on the cap, I heavily chambered both sides, so it is fairly light fo being so thick. I painted the back black and did a pretty good faux binding job taping off the sides while I stained the top. I like Godin guitars, so I used a neck off one of those found on ebay and Fralin PAF's. It sounds very much like a Les Paul. Thanks for the advice. I'm planning more guitars now with an eye towards eliminating my mistakes. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/bsc...stGuitar003.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/bsc...stGuitar006.jpg I used a bit of zebrawood scrap for the control plate, any suggestions on eliminating tear-out on the ferrules? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/bsc...stGuitar007.jpg
  4. I am selling a 1965 (April) Fender Twin Reverb amp. The speakers in it are an EVM series 2 12L and a JBL Professional Series 2130. I had the amp checked out by a local amp tech and he remarked on how great the inside looked after all these years. I had the 2 prong cord switched to a three prong cord for safety, but I still have the original 2 prong cord. $2000 .
  5. I am looking for advice about using Northern Ash. I bought some of this at the store, but have been reading a lot of opinions stating it is vastly inferior to Swamp Ash. Is there a good use for Northern Ash? Anyone who prefers this wood? I'd appreciate some guidance on how to best put this wood to use on a guitar.
  6. I made my first guitar, it sounds great, but the strings seem to fight me a bit. They feel like they are .11's but they are .09's. My question is about the bridge. I put the strings through the body and then up over a tune o matic. If the angle is steep going up from the body to the bridge, will this cause the problem? Would I be best adding the stop bar? Thanks
  7. Is there a book out there with a collection of guitar blueprints, a compendium of all sorts of electric guitars? I'm looking for one great reference to compare and plan my next project. Thanks
  8. I'm building my first guitar and today I used the templates for the neck and pickup (HB) cavaties. On the last one the router went under the template and I basically routed slightly wider than the pickup ring. Do they make a bigger pickup ring that'll hide my screw up? What a bummer.
  9. I got a routing template from StewMac and am going to route out the neck pocket on a LP/Godin style guitar. That angle do I need and how should I go about getting it done correctle? Thanks
  10. My supplies arrived today from StewMac and I'm ready to go. I'd like to do a red stain with the black underneath as I've seen described. What grits do I sand to and when? When do I raise the grain? What should my dye mix be? should I fill the mahogany graing first? Do I do all the routing and hole drilling first? I could use a bit of direction. Thanks in advance
  11. I'm building a Godin LGX style guitar and need a tune-o-matic bridge with a 16" radius. It'll be a string through design, so I don't need a stop bar. Everything I've seen is 12". Thanks, Brad
  12. For my first guitar, I'm looking to apply a tobacco burst finish. What dyes and what order should I go in? Thanks, Brad
  13. Hello, I'm looking for a tutorial on how to stain my quilted maple top. I'd like the dlack/sand colr method, but need specifics (when/how to seal/fill grain (?) top/back (mahogany). Also, what's the best way to put on a clear coat? I'm in real need of a tutorial or two. Thanks, Brad
  14. I'm making my first guitar and I need to replace the blade on the band saw I just bought. For cutting a 2" deep body, what would be the best size and type of blade? Also, what router bit best cleans up the edges once it's cut out? Thanks, Brad
  15. I'm heading to the store tomorrow to buy wood for my first project. It'll be a semi-hollow tele with a humbucker in the neck. I have a great quilted maple cap. Would you suggest a main body of ash, alder, or mahogany? What should I be looking at for the cost of each? I'm headed to McBeath hardwood in Berkeley, Calif. I know it isn't the same, but I am seeking a tone in the neighborhood of BB King. Thanks
  16. This summer I'm going to build my first guitar. I'm going to model it after the G&L Bluesboy which is a semi-hollow tele with no f-hole, humbucker in neck. Can someone tell me where to route out? A picture, sketch, or diagram would help a lot. Also, I have a great piece of 1/4" quilted maple for the top. Would ash be best for the bulk of the body? Thanks, Brad
