  1. whooo I like that .... much better. Very cool in my book. I went through the same thing with my design with respect to the headstock. Can you see a dxf or dwg (Acad 2002) file? I could send you a copy of my 3+3 just to give you some idea of what I'm doing. I went through a bunch of drawings and like what I have now. May not go with your desing but may be the creative gas flowing. If you like it I don't mind you using it as long as I get credit (grin). Cheers John jbyrne39056@cs.com
  2. Thanks BT, I've been reading more and more and am starting to learn. I think now that I would rather use the acrylic. I just said Nitro before because that is what I had read about and not read more. Just starting to research this part of the project. I'll check out NAPA, thanks for the hint. Think I'll get some and do some trial painting ... and staining .. Thanks for everyone's help John BTW, read the pinned threads in this forum, wow what great stuff
  3. Just realized that I don't really know much at all about lacquer. Obviously the Rustoleum type is a differenct chemistry than the nitros. Can anyone explain the differences or maybe know a good link that would? Thanks in advance John
  4. I too think it looks kind of short on the horn side but this is required for this shape or you won't have access to high frets. Heel will present a problem with high fret anyway so maybe move it forward some. I like the head but what if you copy and reverse the horn "C" shape and put it shrunk on the top of the head? May be cool.
  5. I checked the box and this one is and you are right, it is a Freud. The packaging has red in it but the bit is yellow coated. The coating is reported to reduce friction. They sell extra bearings too and I suspect they can be stacked. Been happy this this one so far. Anyone know about Whiteside (Whiteside Machine Co.)? I have one new, 1/2" pattern 3/4" deep part number 3002. Got this one a few years ago on ebay for almost nothing. This one has I believe carbide type toeeth rather than it being a single piece of tool steel. Thanks John
  6. Well I'm in Mississippi so suspect humidity will be similar. Maybe I'll get a can and try it on some scrap wood just for laughs but I think I'll plan on getting some reranch nitro when that time comes. Thanks again Brian John
  7. Ok, disclaimer, have not used these. Saw 1/2" pattern bits for sale at my local building supply and one a Home Depot. Both were about $22. Used a roundover by same brand as at Homedepot and seems like a good bit. Suspect any "Big Box" home building supply company will have a 1/2" or so pattern bit. Also check industrial supply houses. Have not looked but will bet that Grainger sells them and yes anyone can walk in Grainger and purchase. They are in almost all large cities now.
  8. Thanks Brian, You think the running would be a problem only in the final coat? I assume thin coats could be used till then. Wonder if you could go thin coats only? Did it polish out good/similar to nitro? With this said and given your answer I'll probably go with reranch nitro spray can but sure would be nice to use something local ... running short, not a problem just drive on over, you get the pic.
  9. Just noticed this forsale at Wallyworld. Anyone try it? Can it be polished similar to nitro? Thanks John
