  1. We should have a big forum get together. Maybe in Austin?

I was thinking it would be really cool if we started a club or something and had events (tech sessions and what not) but alas I think Pmarlin is the only one in my neck of the woods. But we could still do something annually ya know?

That would be sweet! I'd definitely try and get out there if we had one.

Sounds good!! Andy I just realized you live in Greensboro!! My Grandparents lived on Kimberly Dr close to the country club. They both passed in the 80s, Haven't been in that neck of the woods since, but I still remember it well.

I could meet in Austin after July with no problem. My oldest daughter and her family are moving there in July. So I plan on being there on a regular basis

Awesome. Yeh, that is about a 25 minute drive from where I live.

I've got a sister in Texas so I could probably drop by on the way to visit.

  2. Either that or shopping for wood makes him feel like a kid in a candy store! I know it does me, I would much rather walk through a wood shop than any other type of store including tool stores. I guess in that sense I can in some way relate to many the women I've known that can't help themselves while shopping. If you disagree, try walking past something like a beautiful piece of curly maple that is 1/2 off the price and tell me you could walk away. If you can walk away find another hobby, jk lol.

    On a side note

My parents have a condo in Maui and they were telling me about how they might put a new staircase in. They told me the stairs were solid Koa and after showing them tons of pics, they believe they are figured(as in flame). I told them no problem pulling the staircase out, but you must bring each and every stair back to me. I'll sell off half and keep the rest for guitars. I asked over and over if they could just be veneers, but they are almost certain they are solid as this was a big point that the sellers used and the guy who owned it before them put the staircase in. Who knows though. If by chance the stairs are solid Koa and they take it down, I promise you guys first dibs on the stuff. I just want a few stairs for myself. Not sure but I believe each stair is a good 3-4 inches thick and well over the length of a guitar. I told them if all that is true they have an extremely valuable staircase. Just had to mention that as I was kinda excited about it, won't be for a while, but if it's true :D and my method of payment within the luthiery community will change from dollars to stairs of koa.

That sounds awesome! I can't wait to see what you can get your hands on.

Welcome aboard Fenix! I think we're like reverse-AA though. Instead of stopping the addiction, we just make it worse! B)

  3. Thanks for the tips Woodspokes, I'll definitely keep them in mind!

That's a great find cherokee! But my Dad, who is funding this venture, doesn't like to buy used tools (or even refurbished ones). When it comes to tools, he doesn't really care about price that much (unlike me) as long as the tool is quality. I guess that is a good thing though. :D

We'll probably go out looking around soon and see what we can find.

    Thanks guys,

  4. I PM'ed you MiKro.

    tim_ado,

I see what you're saying. It's really not that hard, but using an already established design will let you get a little more experience in for when you try to go all out on your custom build, I think. That way you would end up with a better quality custom build.

It all depends on the builder's circumstances and abilites. Not really a bid deal though, either way. :D

  5. +∞ about getting Melvyn Hiscock's book. You will love it.

A good idea for a beginning build is to stick with an already established design because you can get really nice detailed plans on them, and there is a lot of info on them. Patience is key as well, both in researching your build and actually building it.

I hope you find PG to be a useful resource. Whenever you start a build please start a thread in the In Progress and Finished Work, we'd love to see it.

I wish you the best on your future builds!

  6. I have a Delta floor model and its great for a number of applications. I also use it for other woodworking, such as motising. One builder, in his "Making of a Strat" blog (in PM), used it with his robo sander and for drilling the truss rod acess hole. As previously mentioned, there are bench models that are fine. Also, if you do a search in the PG forum, you'll find a number of threads on the same topic. Delta does make drill presses with various size pillars. I guess if you go to their website they can tell you where to get these as usually only the standard sizes are sold by retailers.

By the way, if you mount the floor model on 1" ply, as suggested, that also helps with the height issue. Good luck with your choice.

Yeh, I have that "Making of a Strat" blog backed up onto my HD, it is great. Have you ever had any flexing issues like Acousticraft spoke of?

Thanks for all the great responses so far, very helpful!

  7. Well I'm looking to find a good drill press (and hopefully one that won't break the bank). I've heard that floor models are better than bench models, especially if you plan on using it for more than its intended purpose. What about these "heavy-duty" bench models I see? Any good deals out there you guys know of? I don't want to get one online, to save on shipping. Hopefully I'll find a good one somewhere locally.

    Anything I should know?
