  1. To clarify what I was saying about how the wood would be aligned, imagine the )( are maple and the I is the walnut. What if you put them together like so (I) and clamped?

I don't have a problem using another neck wood if this will end up being a problem. And I know I'll get killed for this but...I was keeping the wood on my carport outside, leaning up against a wall :D . Should have stored it flat on the floor of the garage.

    Thanks for the input guys.

  2. I'm going to make a 3 piece laminated neck, maple/walnut/maple with two carbon rods and a hot rod truss rod in it. The walnut is nice and flat but the maple is bowed a bit. Would the maple even itself out if it were placed on either side of the walnut with the bow in opposite directions? And would the CF rods keep it from being a problem in the future? Or would it be a better idea to weigh down the middle of the maple board and get it straight first? The maple is just under an inch thick now and will need to be planed down to 5/8".

    Thanks for your advice.

  3. you still have more than enough side support - especially with a long full width tenon. compare it to the average prs style guitar - its loads more

this is a lp style built by feline guitars:

i like the way he does his neck joins - the full width tenon allows this extra shaping

That's how I did mine. There was a guy on here a few years ago that did it this way and I really liked it. Here is the build thread My link

This is something Gibson needs to look into, as I'm sure nobody likes that bulky neck heel they sport.

Nice work Osorio, looking forward to the progress.

  4. That'll teach me to defend anyone :D .

Yes, I would say that if you make it for the sole purpose of selling (and even reproducing in small batches) you're probably going to get into trouble. I figured not having a serial # (I'm assuming he hasn't added one) would be the dead giveaway to any potential customers.

I guess I'll have to say nice work but you're treading a slippery slope by trying to make this a business.

  5. I bet he really regrets posting that guitar now. Seems like a lot of builds (by non-regulars) end up causing some sort of controversy around here nowadays for some reason. Either that or the backhanded compliments like "I don't usually like ugly guitars but yours is okay I guess". That's what someone wants to hear when they've worked their tails off on something after all. I guess not everyone's mother was like mine with the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" advice. Now we'll hear how insults are supposed to make people better builders.

I think this is a nice version of the SRV guitar by someone who likely didn't want to spend (or didn't have it to spend) the large price for a Fender version. I have personally put Fender decals on the headstocks of a couple of my guitars but sign the back of the headstock with a silver Sharpie. I just don't think it looks right without the logo. If you can get around it by making your own version like Ferden or Tender or whatever, that's one way to go. Add your own logo is another. But When someone says "this is my hand built guitar" I assume they don't work for Fender so they're not trying to fool anyone. If they do, that's their dishonestly and it's their problem imo.

  6. When they came up with the V, they made this one too (Moderne)

sure about that - they certainly designed it at the same time but definitive proof of a 58 moderne is hard to come by - and gibbons aint sharing!

I thought I read somewhere that Gibson made a few back when the V and Explorer were introduced but discontinued them because they weren't selling at all or something. The book I read that from also said any original moderne before Gibson re-introduced them is considered the "holy grail" to guitar collectors :D

That book might be "Gibson Guitars: 100 Years of an American Icon" by Walter Carter. That's where I read about them too. Someone at Gibson evidently designed all three at the same time but the Moderne didn't make the cut. The V, Explorer, and Moderne were designated "The Modernistic Korina Trio" at inception. But as the book says, the Moderne "disappeared without a trace" while the other two actually became more popular than they imagined. But it does say that the Modernes "vanished, every single one of them". That sounds like some were made, though not large quantities. Strange that no one can track even one down now though.

But Gibson has made some Moderne reissues

  7. Well if you admit that it isn't a pretty piece of wood in the first place and that you aren't great at finishing, this might be a candidate for a solid color. If you go that route, it's not a problem at all, since you could patch it and never know it happened. That's what I would do. Be thankful it's not some $100+ maple top or something.

  8. I agree that if you don't get it right, it will always bother you. May as well do it right now. Compare it with your mockup and it's plain to see it's too dark now. BTW, that mockup is one of my favorite guitars ever. Sunburst LP Jr. is killer! I've got one that is just Gibson red mahogany but I wish I had done a sunburst.

I don't know if you've read this, but it's a pretty good read: Reranch gibson burst

  9. Why not just do the dragon the way it is: an outline drawing? I don't know what you have done there, a sharpie or something, but use some paint that's compatible with the final finish, then clear over it. That way you still have the dragon but it isn't distracting to the overall picture.

  10. I would lift them out and refret, especially since they weren't glued in the first place. Definitely bend the frets more than your FB radius, and put a little CA glue in the slots. I prefer to press frets in but if you hammer, do like Juntunen mentioned and clamp the frets down with a radius block. You should be able to glue them all in three or so steps depending on the length of the block. Don't be in a hurry and it should be fine.
