bass wood to me says I'm cheap.

I build with Mahogany,alder,maple walnut cheery and poplar anything but bass wood I don't like because it dents so easy and I find that it's are hard to hold a bridge screw.

when building a guitar that will be a solid color I would use alder or poplar.

to me this wood have great tone.

you might use a shim under the nut to raise it to the hight you want

Gibson made a double cut away les paul with a Explorer head stock in the 80s.

I know this because a friend of mine has one and it's looks cool and plays well.

I say draw it out and see if you like what you have and go for it.

if you still have scratches in the finish your not done wet sanding.

I would wet sand starting with 400 grit and go from there.

you might need to spray more color and wet sand again.

when you have it nice and smooth with no scratches then you can start to spray clear.

the body will look dull after wet sanding. the shine will come after you spray clear.

can you glue a small piece of maple on to each side of the cavity then rout again.

I know you will not get a perfect match in grain but that is what I would do.

I used the Trans-Tint brand in the past with no trouble.I also used the powder dye and that work well also.

the best thing I would say is always test it on scrap first.

sand/ wet sand with 400 gril and spray more coats and your grain will fill in

the wood looks like alder.

alder is a good tone wood and some of the first fender tele/strat where made from alder

lie Nielsen are vary nice.

the t.c stereo chorus is great no noise and has a vary cool stereo sound.

I use a flat bottom lie Nielsen for roughing out necks and it work great.

I also use a rasp and scrapers before sanding.

lee valley makes a nice spoke shave.

once you get them adjusted you will rough out a neck in no time.

I say just route the pocket a little deeper as long as you have enough wood to rout from the neck cavity you should be cool

I worked for 4 years at a lumber yard on a planer working with hard woods like maple walnut mahogany what ever needed.

I never seen this done thanks for showing all of us.

this way you control your volume with your guitar and not the amp.

tube sound all the way to the bank. the amp sound rock's the sound is way cool for rock or blues and clean it like a fender

vary cool sound what is the cost for the amp you might have a new line of work here.

strat or tele mostly strat

buy Melvyn Hiscock's book and read it over and over again and agin.

as for the set neck I would first try and build with a fender style neck joint.

one more thing about set neck once you learn a little more you might find you like set neck better then you thought. when glued together correctly they are vary strong just ask Gibson or prs

I like the vanhallen thing you got going on

I'm not a fan of basswood it is to light weight. there is a much nicer woods to use if your going for a painted guitar use popular or alder. the wood is a little harder and will hold a screw much better.

all my necks are glued in.

I make my finger boards 2-1/4 starting around the 19 fret give or take depending on the body shape and have the neck tenon straight 2-1/4 going under the front pickup. when I glue up a neck I know it needs to be 2-1/4 wide to match the finger board.

I have had no problem with this and it is simple.

there are things you can do different you just have to give it a try.
