  1. Hey folks, so I'm starting to think about a first carved top build...and I'm kinda torn between either a PRS doublecut, PRS Singlecut and a LP. Can you guys elaborate on the pros and cons, from a build point of view, of the above three guitars? Which is hardest-easiest? Any specific design elements that need to be in mind during the undertaking? Anything at all that would help the decision process is welcome. Thanks guys! -Frank P.S. Sorry about the typo in the heading....Obviously I meant to say "Top" not "To"
  2. Hey folks, So I ordered a fretboard from Stewmac....I must've punched in the wrong number, because they sent me one of their compound radius boards...So I either need to return it or work with the board I've got.. I've never worked with a compound radius board, so I'm a little aprehensive to keep this one...but I wonder if you guys could talk me through how one would sand this board?? I assume I would have to progressively sand the board with different radius blocks...but is there a particular way I should do this? How do I know what part of the board to sand with what particular radius block? Thanks for any insight... -Frank
  3. LI as in Long Island? What is the name of the store that carries it? I found a place in Huntington that carries wide board 8/4 mahogany but no one with any good maple. Whereabouts are you? I'm from Lindenhurst. exafro, The place I'm refering to is Woodply lumber in Freeport. They stock a good deal of this stuff...curly maple, quilt, mahogany, birdseye maple...I just got about 3 bodies worth of basswood there...going back for some alder soon...
  4. Not for the OFR. There's no 12" nut. Just 10". As for the mismatch, I'm starting to agree, that's not a big deal....plus, I'm starting to like the idea of trying the compound radius boards at stewmac...and then ordering some new saddles from FR to flatten the radius at the bridge. -F
  5. Do'ah!!! That's what I meant...it's been a long day!!! The unradiused is certainly an option that I didn't consider. Can one 'radius' a fingerboard with a radiused sanding block, or is that a method not advised?
  6. Hey folks, I'm planning a guitar that will have a Floyd Rose (OFR) tremolo...which has 10 deg radius at both the nut and bridge. Stew mac sells fretboards at 12 degrees. Is this a drastic enough difference to be an issue? How can I get around this? Is it just a case of using a radiused sanding block at 10 degrees and hitting the 12 degree board with the 10 degree block until the curve is correct? Thanks for any advice regarding this... -Frank
  7. Hey folks, I'm a few weeks from starting construction on my first neck...and I wonder if you guys could offer some advice as to the various popular methods of routing a truss rod channel. The way I see if, I can get a smaller pattern following bit for my router (the one I have is 1/2") and route using a template. Or I can run the blank through my tablesaw using a wide blade...and glue in blocks later. Any other options? -Frank
  8. Hey guys, I think I'm going to stick with Birdseye maple for the time being... I have a place here on LI that stocks the stuff, so I'm going hunting on friday... -Frank
  9. I can see the guy at lowes, who probably couldn't make the difference between maple and mahogany go "Soft Maple? what's that?" lol I'll have to figure that one out by myself... -F
  10. Come to think of it, my local home depot does not carry maple, but my Lowes sure does. I built my son's Train Table with 1" thick maple boards...if I remember correctly 3 or 4 inches wide...but I know I can get 1X4 stock there... With respect for grain, refresh my memory, as this is my first dive at building a neck...what exactly am I looking for again?
  11. Hey folks, I'm brand new here...but I've been lurking for a few weeks. I'm in the middle of starting a strat build...and I'm wondering what you guys feel about sources of maple for the neck. I can certainly order a blank from one of the various retailers...but is there any reason why I can't simply pickup some straight 1X4 maple stock at lowes or home depot? Thanks, Frank
