This is the lower horn. See the lil gouge from the router? Just sand it out right? Or should I fill it, then sand?

Didn't cut it right w/ the router. It will be hidden, but should I sand? Or reroute?

A gouge from my drill when trying to drill a hole for wires to go thru. Ideas?

Bad router gouging in the all important neck pocket.

I'll have to get the neck before I decide what to be done w/ that.

This is my 1st guitar.

So far I've learned:

1) Get the body cut out first. Do not use the router for this.

2) get longer drill bits to avoid the coller of the drill from gouging the wood.

3) its a plunge router. I don't really need to use the wood chuck all the way, but it does help to get rid of a lot of the wood. Just need to keep the tip from going too far in.

Next:

Making control cavity covers out of veneer. If I can't get it, I'll try that tutorial here using the trash can method .

Routing out for control cavity covers.

Figuring out how to do the contours.

Do a dry fit of electronics.

Wait for neck.

Do a dry fit of neck electronics setup...see how it plays...

Then finish.

So I got the body cut out, the rear cavities done. The output jack done.

BUT again, I have some mishaps. As soon as I can get these pics uploaded, I"m ask for some help. I"m GUESSING they just need to be sanded out.

Do you all prefer to use like a belt sander or sanding disc to sand/cut out the arm rest/chest-belly area?

It might just be because I need to get it closer to the line and round it off by sanding better.

I haven't been able to find someone to cut the shape out first.

And I was getting ancy...so I just went w/ routing out the front.

My friend is supposed to find me someone that has the right tools to cut it out.

I mean, I have a jigsaw, but I just dont think its powerful enough to cut thru 1.75" of wood.

As you can see the area inside the bridge hum route ...came out BAD.

It was my first time. And I was using a wood chuck, you know that makes a hole.

Anyway, the tip is super long...so it goes deeper than the chuck....

I'm guessing just using wood filler?

I need to get it cut out before I can do the back....

I tried routing it out, but decided that was not the best course of action.

I don't think my jigsaw will handle it either.

And I couldn't afford that 9" bandsaw (damn you X-mas)...

You say the drill press sucks, but the router gets rave reviews here.

I went tonite to pickup some sandpaper for a table I'm working on when I noticed the 9" Ryobi bandsaw I kinda want is on sale from $99, to $87. I asked a guy how much longer that sale was gonna be going on...he wasn't sure, and the guy that runs that deptartment wasn't around. So, he told me some "inside information"; Starting tomorrow all hardware will be 20% off. Taken at the register.

I dunno if he was just telling me that to get me to leave him alone or what.

But I was gonna pick up the Ryobi 9" tomorrow anyway. So we'll see if in fact there is another 20% off or not.

So, in short, if anyone is looking for some tools, tomorrow might be a good day to go and see.

And if you don't get the 20% off, return it, unless its worth it.

But for those looking for a bandsaw, the ryobi 9" IS on sale for $87.

man.definately wear good tight goggles and gloves when you do that.

cuz man....a piece of metal in ur eye or under skin...can't be good.

make shallower cuts, this should help, it takes longer but is worth it. i had that problem on some mahogany bodies, just go very very slow! and also it helps if you are barely taking any wood off, so when you rough out the body on the band saw try to stay about 1/16 from your line this will also help.

When you're using a pattern bit, you have no choice but to go full depth on the first pass, in this case 1". I was routering the body from a template attached to the top. I guess you could start on the bottom edge of the body, then when you work your way up to the figured top, reduce the height of the passes.

I was probably more like 1/8-1/4" from the line on the band saw. The blade had some kinks in it, so I was playing it safe - next time I'll buy my own blade and bring it to the shop.

You can probably use that bit so you don't HAVE to cut the full length.

Just 1/4" at a time....and then move up to the longer template bit to cut the rest off.

At least, thats what i'm hoping...cuz thats what i'm gonna do
