Hey there, I've been creeping around checking out threads for a while, and am really enjoying some of the creativity of design going on here, which is my main drive for the hobby. I recently picked up on my second build which I started 6 years ago while still in high school, so hence I have forgotten most of the things I learned during my first build. Anyhow, here's the quick catalogue of the one and a half guitars I've done.
First one, made in woodwork, with technical help from luthier Derrick McCandless in grade 10:
-Ash body (2 pieces)
-maple neck stolen, refinished and modified off of an old Aria Pro
-crap Aria pro bridge pickup
-semi-crap Dimrzio (not sure of model) neck pickup.
-Tuners also ganked off of the Aria pro
It was one hella ugly beast.
Here is the one I am currently working on, I've just gotten to the finishing stage. I realized after 15 coats of diamond-coat varathane that I'd put it on too thick on the sides so I have to sand it all off and start over. Ech. Anyhow, here's the current progress. It's made out 3 pieces of lacewood.
It's state when I started to work on it again:
I'm especially proud of the scrolling taper.
After bridge installation, with crookedass ugly tailpiece:
After drilling out crookedass tailpiece and improvizing some inlays to cover it up:
And that's pretty much where I'm at. I've routed all my holes and oggered my wiring holes. There are definately mistakes, but you gotta learn somehow.
I am FULLY open to suggestions and corrections to keep in mind for my next build, as sometimes I just don't know which questions I should be asking and I'm tackling this without any professional guidance.
I need to get a bridge pickup still. The neck is a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Single coil. Any suggestions? I like a bluesy/jazzy sound.
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to contributing and gaining a lot of knowledge from the people on the forum, and a lot fo you seem to really know your stuff.
