  1. ok but from what I've been told and read on the net is that mahogany comes from 3 areas of the world correct? south america, africa and south east asia? are they all similar in tone and how they cut? I don't care what the grain looks like or the color. I've never built or even worked on a guitar so I'm all new to this. I have made several pieces of furniture though so I'm going about this using common sense and a book i bought from amazon on how to build a guitar, the authors last name is Hiscock I believe. so you're implying that when a manufacturer says a guitar is made from a certin type of wood thats not always the case? its actually just a veneer?
  2. 12 views and no reply? come on guys I'm not asking you to draw blood.
  3. I've been checking out different brands of guitars lately. Thinking I would buy something relatively cheap like an Agile or Dean made from mahogany for example. Since its cheap I wouldnt care about possibly destroying it in an attempt to do a project build. Do you people know where manufacturers get the wood they use to make their guitars? Is all mahogany good mahogany?
  4. I'm still undecided on the woods I want to use. I wanna stay away from woods I consider to be routine such as maple, alder, basswood and poplar. Wanted to go with something I consider unique to me since the only guitars I've every owned were all made from routine woods as stated above. So i have been thinking about for the body to be made out of Korina, Walnut, Mahogany, Swamp Ash. whatever else might be out of the norm as far as me only having experience playing Ibanez brand and other mass produced POS clones. feel free to put up some recommendations.
  5. I've been thinking about building my own guitar for about 3 years and I am now ready to start buying stuff to do the work. Besides a bandsaw and a router, what else do I need tool wise? I see somebody put up a link for a tool list but it doesnt work. Also, is there any reason why manufacturers never use a dovetail neck to body joint?
