  1. http://www.elysian-online.com/YamahaProjec...haProject21.jpg 3 coats of ktm9 on it, i'm gonna sand it down with 320 today and apply a few color coats. theres a couple of runs, but nothing too crazy.
  2. I've never even heard of KTM. This stuff looks great. Its got the look I want and I wont be hurting good ol' mother nature. Apparently Stewmac came out with a waterbase lacquer too. Its a lot cheeper, but idk how good it is. Have you used KTM? Has anyone used the Stewmac ColorTone Waterbase Lacquer? Also, what oil should I use for the neck? My girlfriend has a Squier That I play when I stay at her house and its a POS but I really like way the neck feels. Its got a satin look to it. i'm using ktm9 for the first time right now, i've put about 8 coats on a neck, and just put the first coat on the body. if stewmac sells it for cheaper, i'm sure its just as good. edit: wow, 1 gallon for 45 bucks, i'm gonna try it next.
  3. why not finish the body and headstock in lacquer, and give the neck an oil finish? you should also consider KTM9 if you're worried about the environment.
  4. thus far i feel like i'm getting just as good of results as with nitro, but we'll see when i do the whole guitar.
  5. lmii.com sells it in their finishes section. its basically a water based lacquer, its better for the environment, as well as health, and is comparable to nitro.
  6. http://www.elysian-online.com/YamahaProjec...haProject19.jpg i sanded it to 220 grit, also raised the grain and knocked that down with 220 as well, and now its getting pore filled. in about 2 hours i'll sad it down with 320 and tomorrow it'll get its first 4 coats of ktm9
  7. how do you like the KTM9? i've sprayed about 6 coats of it so far, and i'm liking it now that i've got it figured out. guitar looks great.
  8. alright, internet is back up, heres the side dots if pore filling goes well tomorrow, i'll be spraying finish on it tomorrow, getting a color coat in as one of the coats. i'm stoked
  9. Got the finish all figured out now, needed to thin it out a little with denatured alcohol(should have read the instructions!). 2 more coats today, and then tomorrow ill flat sand it, and do it again. I did the side dots today, used a 3/32 bit and filled the holes with ebony dust and the used superglue to set them, sanded that down, and sprayed finish over them, they look great, but no pics until later, my internet is down until later tonight. I'm also working on finishing up the body, I'm making the cavity cover routing templates right now, and ill route out the covers later today, fill any screw holes, start finish sanding, and pore fill it with the epoxy pore filler I got with my ktm9 kit.
  10. sanded the runs down, sprayed some in the booth to check my gun settings, and still wound up getting runs on the neck... gotta keep working on it edit: looks like theres really only one run, the rest is flawless, so thats not so bad. 4 more coats today and i'll get back to it tomorrow.
  11. does anyone here have experience with KTM9? i sprayed the first bit on the neck today, and immediately found out it runs very easily, gonna have to sand it down tomorrow morning and reapply, gotta mess with my gun settings some more.
  12. http://www.elysian-online.com/YamahaProjec...haProject16.jpg as you can see, i started routing for the trem, routed the neck single, and scalloped the neck joint.
  13. this used to be a 1991 RG570FM. it is now my single coil pickup template, or at least, a template i make other templates from.
  14. well, considering all the great instruments you've built, i'll take your advice on this one
  15. not even offset dots? or even 12th fret dots? totally blank? i guess with side dots itd be alright eh?
  16. well think about this, i've found i get lower action on the bass strings with more relief, where i get lower action on treble strings with less relief. you don't need a lot of relief on the treble strings because when they vibrate, they don't move around nearly as much, so you can get away with less relief. bass strings tend to benefit from more relief, or so i've found...
  17. mines even more extreme than that i'm also going to experiment with moving the truss rod towards the bass side a little bit, in hopes that i can get more relief on the bass side than on the treble side.
  18. wow, great project. question, any reason for the deep tenon? only thing i can figure is maybe you don't want it to look like a neck through? nice work thus far, the binding rules. whats with the channel on each side of your fretboard? is something going to go over the top of that, or is that to set the depth of your fretboard or something? and the asymmetrical neck, is it like todd keehn at tkinstruments.com does? like this? i've done that setup before, on my 7 string flying V, and i love it, its my absolute favorite neck carve. i even recarved my 6 string to make it somewhat like that.
  19. http://www.elysian-online.com/YamahaProjec...haProject13.jpg theres the alder blank glued in, gonna send it through the planer later today(but not until after my job interview.) and man, nearly 250 views and no comments? do i smell funny?
  20. theres the old trem route, looks so bad, i was so new. http://www.elysian-online.com/YamahaProjec...haProject11.jpg filling the old trem route with older, it basically has an alder toneblock now.
  21. http://www.elysian-online.com/YamahaProjec...ahaProject8.jpg scallop is done up to 80 grit now, man it was tough. ebony is so much easier to scallop than maple. next step is to sand the neck up to 220, finish the fret job, tape up the frets, and lacquer the neck/board. but i can't spray any lacquer till i get the inlay dots, so that'll be later this week hopefully.
  22. http://www.elysian-online.com/YamahaProjec...ahaProject7.jpg scallop is halfway done(though only sanded to 80 grit right now, i'll work the whole neck up to 220 soon)
