  1. I posted the guitar when I finished it last month. this one.. So, I was amazed at the sound of it, with the texas specials and the neckthru... so I started out to get a smaller amp, bluesy like a tweed.... I decided to make my own, using my H&K 200 watt head as a chassis and make me a combo twin. I ordered tweed and oxblood grill cloth for a vintage look. For now, heres the rig... Amp Pic1 Amp Pic2
  2. yep , last night i finished soldering the 3 way toggles.. in phase, out of phase and off to each singel pickup.. strung it up. the wilkinson block i bought has the string holes offset for compensation rather than straight across like a strat. also, teh EARVANA nut said to start the nut adjustment slid up as far as the grooves go towards the headstock.. so.. i strung it up, grabbed my tuner. (digital, not a strobe). tuned it up the string height was damn near knats ass on.... and the neck is a 12" radius wiht big ass frets...... how can that be? the intonation was also perfect.... nothing was set up at all by me... does anyone know if my wilkinson trem came set up factory? if so, that might essplain it... but the string height for the 12" radius neck and jumbos was too weird to have it all fall together like that. i plugged in and.... never "felt" it ring like this korina. Never had a tonewood rig before either ('cept my Hamer USA spwcial).. I now see what you all mean... wowzers.... never had a bluesy clean yet dirty setup with dynamic and expression... yes that is a playing style (soften it up, then full on scream at ya) but i see it isnt as much ALL a style as I thought. these texas special pups are something else... i really am proud of how this all came together.. too bad we couldnt upload sound clips somewhere here...
  3. I agree, I'd like to see the neck heel as well. I ain't a fan of Strats, but I like the way this one came out If they started making Strats neck-through, I might be enticed enough to pick up one and start playing! I dig the color and the pickguard, they look really good together. Doesn't that volume knob that close to the bridge get annoying? I'd be bumping into it all the time, heh. Well thats what I was avoiding showing (lol)... no way to make a smooth tranistion... so, remember the heel pic i posted a week or so ago (here) My Webpage and here is how the paint was transitioned.... (before it was rubbed out). the neck back was not lacquered, just sealed and the oiled.
  4. Ok, heres it is! Note the tele jack! This is the Korina neck-thru... First one. Had to take the finish off and start over, but this is how it came out. Not bad for a 1st time... Heres a pic My Webpage Another of the EARVANA nut My Webpage This is for ME and not for resell, so...heres the headstock... My Webpage Whats left.. Have a tad bit more soldering.. as you see, its wired up like a superstrat... also, I plan to thro somw graphtech ghost saddles in it.... wire it on its own a/b circuit from the magnets... eventually. for now, my goal is to plug this baby in tonight!!! specs: 62 strat copy neck thru, all KORINA Sperzel lockers EARVANA nut texas specials, Wilkinson vintage trem Tele jack. ...
  5. cool! thanks for the tip! I did not know that. Wifeys got nailpolish remover here... ill give it a whirl.
  6. Thanks, I'll try that. For now, I sanded back down the problem areas.. ended up a relic of sorts (not intentional). 1 thing, i did not use any grainfiller.... (ooops) this is my first.. so, heres the unintentional relic for now... i'll order some grainfiller from reranch, and then mix my blend of colors again... for round 2... or, if anyone thinks i oughtta just sand it all down and start over, tell me that too. Im thinking I can fix what you see there (pic) Also, round up some napthalene...
  7. Im doing a guitar in sunburst. That part dont matter.. What problem I have, is that there is a 2.5" round area that wont take sanding sealer... the rest took it fine iim trying to not sand the whole thing sown and start over..... for some reason, the wood in that 1 'lil spot wont take.... any cleaner (household) that i can use rather than go buy something else? any ideas? it's got to be sealed some (1st coat of sealer) as now iw wont even take dye or stain ... weird
  8. HAHA sure.. it's a neckthru, custom thats body is based on a '62 strat, solid Korina... It was originally designed to use w/o a pickguard, thus the rear cavity, but Im using a pickguard with 3 toggles on it (in phase, Out of phase, and OFF) to each of the 3 texas special pickups... its a Korina with a maple neck, med jumbo frets, tele style jack..... The routing you see there , the poster above got it right. it was desinged to use w/o a pickguard, but I like pickguards, thus the rear cavity.... also, I thought about seeing if I could "plug" the rear cavity and route for standard strat, but instead, Im adding some things in the electonics... a push/pull pot and a built in "overdrive", as well as Graphtech piezo saddles for an accostic sound as a choice. In teh cavity, Im bracing it up like the innards of an accoustic, and leaving it chambered... I'll be running 2-9v circuits in there, 1 for the overdrive and 1 for the piezo saddles... so theres plenty of room w/o my having to route anything further. so.. 62 copy, but a neckthru w some unconventional electronics going on... the whole thing weighs 4 lbs as it is and has a heck of a ring when you tap it or knock the wood... very resonate.
  9. Found nitro-cellulose in aresol, bought 2 cans. Made by DEFT. Seems to be a very quality project. Also bought a qt of DEFT lacquer sander sealer. I did the wetting the wood, knocking off the raised grain before I sealed it. THe sealer I got is also sandable (very easy to sand), and dries blazing fast, and pretty good stuff. As I stated the whole thing is white Korina. Im going to attempt my first one as a sunburst even tho others recommend a solid color for the first go.. I think I can pull it off, as everything is going so well so far. i needed an Amber hue. Couldnt find one. i had "golden oak" stain, that I hit it with, then afterwards mixed up a simple red food coloring hue for an orange tint (amber).. the neck came out to a vintage hue perfectly! I don't know if I could even get that mix again so luck was on my side. Anyhoo, here it is after 1 coat of sealer and here it is after 2 more coats (sanding 'tween each) of sealer, which darkend it up a bit.. My Webpage Gonna attempt the black burst poormans method...
  10. Better idea.... get the EARVANA LSR roller nut piece as its a dropin. file it for the 12" radius overhang, shim it if needed, send the whole thing (nut only) to a luthier to replicate in bone... That work?
  11. I recently found an OEM EARVANA as you might have read and seen pics of over the last few days.. (25.5 scale fender style neck, 12" radius... It was pointed out after I filed it to fit the OEM slot that those actually need to be moved towards the 1st fret a bit, but no mention of how far... After reading, I found the groove needed to be moved 3-3/32" forward (towards 1st fret)... So my idea is this... whats stopping me from (besides lack of ablility/experience, first build) from taking my OEM earvana, filing more fromt the backside, so it's 3-32" thick, and gluing it to another graph blank in the existing nut groove, so it has the overhang table thingy on the fretboard like the retro-fit, but 3-32" forward? The OEM just looks better to me. Og course the nut blank piece would have to be grooved for the strings... can ya glue even graph material together? So... anyone have any input? Brain storming here.. really dont want to groove the neck, and the retro fit looks like crap (to me) If I had calipers, more experience, I certainly can do it all out of 2 pieces of bone blanks and it would be ---bone and look decent too, right? I also have no way to measure 3-32".... If I could replicat teh earvana OEM piece to bone... then a bone blank would be better.. but I am not that skilled...
  12. DOnt plan to.. but the other EARVANA unit i saw did have a flat piece that filled the nutgroove, then the unit mounted ontop of that and was partially foward of where the groove was.. overhangs. I think I know what he's saying... but I got the drop in unit... not the 2 piece... Ok, now Ive taken the time to read on more of this in theses posts. I can see that what Ive got there is actually an OEM "LSR Roller" nut replacement, thus the thicker than my groove issue. Also, I read more on what mammoth is talkin 'bout, and yes, folks are moving up in order to correct intonnation. I will now look into getting the retro-fit kit instead, so I dont have to move anything... or ruin my neck. thanks for the info... goldangit.... i asked you guys about an EARVANA before i bought this one, no one answered, so its everyone heres fault but mine... (jk) retrofit it is..... who wants to lend me 30 bux?
  13. DOnt plan to.. but the other EARVANA unit i saw did have a flat piece that filled the nutgroove, then the unit mounted ontop of that and was partially foward of where the groove was.. overhangs. I think I know what he's saying... but I got the drop in unit... not the 2 piece...
  14. Uh Oh.. what I do wrong? You sure you looked at all the pics? This unit wasnt teh 2 piece earvana.. what you see is the only thing in the pkg... did I mess up? Please tell me... I am not sure what you mean by the nut I have needing to be closer to the fret... thats where the OEM groove is.. and the directions said it was a drop in unit..... but my groove is thinner (new virgin fingerboard) may have never been grooved to OEM specs to begin with but i suspect it is... I'd rather not get into doing anything on the fretboard. If this isnt correct, then I may be better off taking it to a shop and having the nut installed... i really dont wanna mess this up.. nothings glued yet. educate me.... heres the final
  15. Got the earvana nut today... not sure about height, so I aint gluing it just yet... more pics My Webpage My Webpage My Webpage My Webpage Ive never put on a nut before. I hope I didnt mess it up. I was told the neck was 1-5/8" fender scale.. so I got the retro fit EARVANA 1-5/8 fender nut... well it was too thick so I filed it rather than file the nut groove... its a graph type material and was easily shaped.. still, it looks barley wide enough.. I would have rather it be too wide and file down the sides.. but this aint too bad...
